It's hard for me to pick a favorite. Everything up to Ice Planet was very good. For older sets I really like Starfleet Voyager. For later sets I like Deep Freeze Defender.

Speaking of Lego Cuusoo, I'm pretty excited about this bad boy: But that's because I'm a total Classic Space nerd. I bet they don't even include the white Space guy, in which case my interest in this will be greatly reduced. However, I'm so excited about this magnificent beauty that I can't even think straight: That's right, a giant, badass CLASSIC SPACE SHIP which will be released this summer! This is Benny's ship from the Lego Movie coming out in February. This is a damn good time to be a fan of Classic Space Legos. And for all you Lego Space fans who happen to be Bronies, Lego has you covered. Check out Astro Kitty:

I really enjoyed the movie. I've also read the book twice and typically I hate when liberties are taken from source material. But I kind of just don't care any more when movies are different from what they're based on. Anyone who likes DYRL doesn't have much of a leg to stand on when griping about divergence. Good things can come from changing things up. On the other hand, I'm a bit weirded at how much I enjoyed seeing the elves become forest Jedi's and totally murder the sh*t out of those orcs. I mean, the hobbit is totally not about that. Hell, even the Legolas scene in LOTR where he took down that Oliphaunt was kind of out of place in how Matrix-like the killing was. I like the idea of Elves being magical, graceful creatures who are incredibly agile, but seeing them become killing machines seems wrong. Even though it felt so right. Totally agree with these! I didn't quote 2 or 7 because I didn't have strong feelings on those points.

I know. Just wasn't sure exactly what the joke was. Do you "hate me" for making you see such a thing? What's weird is when I first saw it I thought it was an Orguss. Then I slowly realized it was a VF-5000 Star Mirage.

Is that missile pack totally useless in fighter mode? Or does it fold out somehow?

Crud, are you telling me that when the we get a favorable exchange rate, the yen price will just go up? Unfair!

I agree with everything you say about it and will be trying to get that fansub; thanks for the heads up on that. I've only seen it raw so far. For some reason I categorize this anime with Birth and Redline. They all involve a lot of chasing/racing scenes, all have distinct animation styles, and all have anti-climactic, weird endings. Birth had somewhat simple designs but ridiculously fluid animation with "moving camera" effects. Both California Crisis and Redline have that high contrast look you mentioned -- one of the first things I noticed when watching Redline.

Robotech - Love Live Alive + Shadow Chronicles 2-movie set
danth replied to Negotiator's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think Robotech created an entire generation of anime fans, more so than anything else prior. Then Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball Z came and created even more anime fans than Robotech. But what nobody ever mentions is the huge difference in the type of people attracted to Robotech (or StarBlazers) and the type of people attracted to Sailor Moon, Pokemon or DragonBall Z. Robotech fans were impressed by the sophisticated story and characters, the beautiful animation (if you don't count the Anime Friend episodes), and/or the science-fiction aspects like space ships and mecha -- much like the Star Blazers fans before them. Sailor Moon, Pokemon and DragonBall Z aren't space or mecha shows. They're also shonen/shoujo -- shows for young kids. While the original Japanese versions weren't as stupid as the dumbed-down US versions, they still didn't feature the kind of sophisticated character growth and interactions as Macross or Yamato. You can argue that Macross was made for kids too, but it wasn't made for young kids like Pokemon was. Macross was smart enough to be enjoyed by adults who wouldn't normally watch cartoons, and I don't think you can say that about DBZ or Pokemon. Animation and art wise, you can argue the merits of each, but neither Sailor Moon, Pokemon, or DBZ had Haruhiko Mikimoto character designs. Now I love Akira Toriyama, and Kazuko Tadano is pretty good too, but Mikimoto is the greatest character designer of all time. Also, only Macross had Itano-choreographed fight animation. Who did the animation direction for DBZ? Don't know? Exactly. To be fair Macross had some horribly animated episodes but it also had DYRL. So what's my point? The generation of anime fans created by Sailor Moon, Pokemon and DragonBall Z aren't looking for science fiction, and they aren't looking for anything incredibly sophisticated, and they aren't even looking for amazing artwork. I don't understand this kind of fan and feel like I have nothing in common with them, personally.- 371 replies

I think they need a reboot with Bryan Cranston as Hawk. I thought he would make an awesome Hawk ever since Malcom in the Middle.

I think Shirow's art was better back in the Appleseed/Dominion Tank Police days.

Roxette has many great songs. Steve Winwood's Valerie is an amazing song. You wanna talk about guilty pleasures: my favorite band growing up was Erasure.
