  1. Well, you could always try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La4z3pZ1O00
  2. Great news -- I finally managed to track down a secondhand beech Detolf. Thank God for Craigslist! While on the hunt for beech Detolfs, I discovered that Ikea Canada still carries them, but they won't ship them to U.S. addresses.
  3. Yeti, you might want to get in touch the guys behind this Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/trammel/the-official-settlers-of-catan-gaming-board?ref=nav_search I backed this project. It's a plastic gaming board for use with Settlers of Catan. They also had to do injection molding, so they would be familiar with some of the issues that can crop up. While the project was ultimately successful, they did hit a few snags a long the way from what I can remember.
  4. Movie/TV definitely dwarfs comics, but sales data from Diamond indicates that comic sales have actually grown in the last few years. Some of that was from DCs reboot bringing back lapsed readers who stuck around and checked out other books (the whole "rising tide lifts all boats" theory). I think a lot of it also attributed to growth outside of the standard direct market DC/Marvel sales -- basically, The Walking Dead (and Image Comics more generally), graphic novels and bookstore sales.
  5. Superhero comics have been criticized for years for not being diverse enough -- basically, straight white male heroes, with the occasional black or female hero. The standard solution these days seems to be to take established characters and change their sexuality/ethnicity/gender. Now I think greater diversity itself is not the issue, but this just seems symptomatic of a greater trend at boosting sales in the short-term using gimmicks. DC and Marvel seem to have given up on the idea of trying for steady and sustainable growth, and instead have opted to be profitable by a few sales spikes (followed by the standard attrition) per year based on reboots, character deaths and/or resurrections, gender swaps, crossovers, etc. typically followed by the usual attrition.
  6. I have used super glue for loose joints on some older toys. The one downside is that the dried glue can produce a lot of white, flaky residue. If the toy is not also white, it will look messy.
  7. Hmmm... Hampton is a little out of my way (I'm in Northern VA), but maybe I'll have to stop by the store if I've ever in town. How much were they selling the other stuff for?
  8. Hazray, where in VA are you located? What store is this?? I must know!

  10. Let's see, a bunch of kids in school who also have adventures flying transforming mecha... I'm guessing HG really really wishes they could get the rights to Macross Frontier right about now.
  11. In an earlier post, I wrote that most of what was good in Robotech was from the Japanese source material. The one thing I thought HG did well was the voice acting and the background music. When I watched SDFM, I noticed that there was a lot less background music compared to Robotech. The music they added did a lot to enhance some of the scenes, especially the more somber ones. And while Minmei's voice was grating at times, most of the voice actors did a good job.
  12. Fans want to see the Sentinels in theory (i.e., a sequel that follows the Macross characters), not the Sentinels that was actually written and partially produced. The three episodes that were made were not very good. The plot outlines for the remaining episodes were also not very good either. The novelizations were very uneven as well, going further and further off the rails the deeper into the story it went. _End of the Circle_ was a train wreck. Protoculture became The Force a la Star Wars. Minmei went from an aging pop star who can't let go of the past to the mother of Zor and the reason for the existence of the entire Robotech saga. It was bad. The Sentinels is evidence that anything good that came from Robotech was mostly from Macross, and mostly from the Japanese source material, not what HG made up to fill in the holes. And this is coming from someone that actually looks back fondly on Robotech, warts and all. Robotech is like a tortured zombie that keeps getting resurrecting to do his master's evil bidding. Just let the poor thing die and remember it for what it was.
  13. Maybe, maybe not -- at the end of the day, money talks. Regardless of whether they liked it or not, they bought it. As far as most companies are concerned, you vote with your dollars. Why do you think terrible action/horror/comedy films keep getting made? As long as they are making money off it, they won't care that people didn't like it. Besides, there aren't exactly that many companies that make perfect transformation Macross toys. Even on MW, people have complained about the quality of various released from Bandai, Arcadia/Yamato in the past, but we still keep buying them because there isn't another game in town. I'm not saying that the people at Arcadia don't care about putting out a quality product. Just that when companies make business decision on whether to release certain products, the only real measure of whether customers liked something is how many units it sold.
  14. Same here -- Madox and Bubblegum Crisis for me. I think the mecha designs for both shows were done by the same guy (name escapes me) who did the designs for Mospeada.
  15. Sorry, I was referring to the MPC Cyclone, which was originally made by Beagle and licensed and re-branded by Toynami as a Robotech product. I think the post before yours was asking about Cylone re-releases, and I thought that was what you were referring to.
  16. Edit: whoops, sorry I didn't know a thread had already been created. My apologies. Anyone know anything about this series? While I love Macross, unless it involves sci-fi or giant robots, I generally don't follow anime/manga in general. http://io9.com/netflix-gets-into-the-anime-licensing-game-with-knights-1597188356
  17. Just be careful about that palladium poisoning... I hear it can do bad things to you.
  18. The Ikea has nice bookcase solutions, but I think my preference is for a shelving unit that has glass panels all around rather than wood. I used to have my collection in a bookcase, but what I found was that I couldn't display anything in the background because the bookcase wouldn't let any light in except in front. My room where I keep my collection is a basement office without windows, so the only light comes in overhead. With a bookcase, everything was just too dark. With a Detolf, I get ambient light from all around, so I can display figures in the background and they won't be in the shadows.
  19. Interesting. At the last visit where I went looking for Detolfs, I noticed that they had discontinued the Expedit line and replaced it with the virtually identical-looking Kallax line. The only difference seemed to be that the outer edges panels were a bit thinner. I would think that routinely replacing the line-up is normal as styles change. But I feel like most of Ikea's designs are so simple that they could withstand many years of changing styles.
  20. Yeah, I think KiriK did a similar mod. It's somewhere in the Macross display thread I believe.
  21. I agree that the Stockholm cabinet is not as good a value in comparison to the Detolf, and I also dislike the door frames causing a blockage in the front. However, when I saw it in person at the store, I noticed that it did seem to be sturdier than the Detolf. Also if you don't like the legs you could probably just not install them and rest the unit on the floor. The other thing I noticed was that it used real wood, rather than that fake particleboard stuff that Ikea typically uses, which explains the added price. But more than that, it also means that you could repaint it to something you like better. Looks like I'll be scouring Craigslist for beech-colored Detolfs.... sigh.
  22. So I went on Ikea's website the other day looking to see if my local store had any Detolfs in stock, and I noticed that the black/brown one was the only one listed -- they didn't show the beech version. Since I live relatively close to Ikea, I stopped by today while my family was out shopping and talked to a couple of their staff members. It turns out that Ikea has discontinued the beech colored version, and is only stocking the black/brown one. They are also planning to introduce a white Detolf in August. So for those of you who have only beech colored ones (like me) and you need to add more, you're either going to have to live with mismatching cabinets, find used ones on Craigslist, or ditch them and start anew with a different kind. I also noticed that Ikea has introduced a new glass cabinet that looks like it could be rather nice for displaying toy collections. It's about the size of two Detolfs side by side, but you get a little more space since there's no gap in the middle. It's a little pricey in comparison, but it looks a bit more solid. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90239733/#/90239733
