It's more than just a repaint, if we're both thinking of the military version Aquarion. I have the military version and from what I recall of the original Aquarion, the military version has a few cosmetic differences.

They were definitely defenders inside the ship in DYRL. There's a brief scene where you see a Tomahawk and an off-screen Valkyrie (we see only the front half of its gunpod) firing at and being destroyed by Zentraedi power armors.

I don't know, I kinda like the onyx/crimson color scheme. However, since I already own an onyx DS Lite, I won't be buying another one. The only game system that I have more than one of is the PS2. I was going to mention this as well. The space colonies in Gundam have natural rain cycles as well. Rain occurs when an atmosphere becomes saturated with water vapor. The water then condenses and precipitates.

It's fairly common for manga adaptations of anime to differ from the original source. Usually it's just a case of different author, different perspective.
