  1. Well, it's not like it looks brilliant, but I think it has potential to at least be a fun film.
  2. Kat Dennings did make the most of a small part in the first film. If she can do the same here, it'll be fun.

Great work! I'm looking forward to more of your design. It's always good to see more CG model work of the other Macross mecha. On the topic of design compromises, I wouldn't go "full Yamato" if you know what I mean. You can always use "CGI magic" and invisibly part-swap or arbitarily resize, which is the EXACT same thing they do in the original animation. However, I would also say you are fine with changing things a little here and there to accomodate various modes. If you have to fudge things 10% here and there to make it work better in GERWALK and Battroid, go for it as long as it doesn't make the fighter look WAY off. Remember, the original is hand-drawn animation and the proportions of the drawings/animated cells vary by a lot more than 10% from one animated scene to the next. You're in good company if you want to fudge things a little Pretty much all the line art I have on the YF-21 is on my website, with a few exceptions. But if you need larger versions of anything for clarity, just let me know and I'll post them.
  4. Very nice. I'm not sure if I'll take the plunge. Now that I already have the 5-disc blu-ray, I'm thinking they need to get to 4k resolution before I upgrade again.
  5. Cool. Added you to watchlist.
  6. We got a trailer now for Arnold's new movie. Check it out: http://www.slashfilm.com/the-last-stand-trailer-arnold-schwarzenegger-gets-a-second-chance/ I've seen Kim Ji-Woon's "I Saw The Devil" which was brilliant and a great last hurrah for the Korean revenge thriller genre that has made such an impression this past decade. If he brings even half of what he did in that film to a Schwarzenegger movie, this could be a lot of fun.
  7. I've seen some of your stuff elsewhere (likely on DeviantArt, since I often visit there) but it's always great to see more. Your work is very good. Bravo! I like the Mospeada bike in the cell style. Incredible work.
  8. Just wanted to highlight this paragraph because it's an opinion I really agree with that I have tried many a time to impart upon fans who like what I do with the Macross Mecha Manual. While there is a little skill to be developed over time, I am by no means exceptional with art. The most important "skills" to develop are patience and persistence (and research). That's all. Simply dedicate some time to a project and keep at it, even if it's just in small portions every day and the work will get done. There's no magic, just effort. If a complete novice like me can install photoshop and color line art, anyone can do it. Keep up the great work danbickell!
  9. I think that's why changes like this self-censorship really irk me; Macross DYRL is one of those staples of popular culture that has endured and survived the bitter judge of culture that is my experience and maturity. I've left plenty of movies, music and literature behind in my past, my present and will do so in my future. But something like DYRL has maintained my interest and admiration over the ages and I do not see that changing. Which is why it's so important to preserve these works...truly enduring popular culture is already rare enough as it is without damaging the few works that survive the ages. But alas, before I get too worked up about it... I don't think the DYRL Blu-Ray is a bad purchase overall, but I know in it's current edited state the end result would bother me if I purchased it (like Ghost in the Shell). I suppose cost is particularly relevant right now because I've purchased so much Macross merchandise recently (8+ new art books and counting) that I think it best to curtail expenditures. On the plus side, any fans of my site will be much happier if I spend money on line art
  10. I was a huge Thor fan as a kid and even though I was late to the game, I did read all of Walter Simonson's run on the comic from the 1980s. Malekith was actually one of the more successful villains in the Thor comics. He was in league with the fire giant Surtur and acting as an agent on his behalf, Malekith's actions enabled Surtur to invade Asgard. Casting Eccleston in anything is a smart move. Anyone who has seen him in the Danny Boyle films knows he's a solid actor. Upon hearing Eccleston is cast, I must admit I can easily relax after the loss of Mads Mikkelsen from this Thor sequel. Things are looking good so far!
  11. Really sorry to hear these changes are now a reality for the consumer. All we can do is let the powers that be know we are not impressed and hope this foolishness is corrected on the next format (which I assume will be the 4k format, whenever we get there). Have to say, I am rather exhausted becoming outraged by the self-censorship creators impose upon their own now-classic works. But I do find I'm learning a lesson in humanity as I live through these events. It's ironic that creators like Kawamori were champions for popular culture in the previous generation and now the biggest enemy to censorship is not some "authority" or "establishment" against which they fought in their youth...it is themselves "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villian." I wonder if I'll get this way as I reach my 50s and 60s? As I slow in activity and mellow in mind, will I too become weary of that violence and action which once inspired and energized my imagination in youth? Or will I be self aware enough to recognize that though I may come to grow distaste for those violent parts of life, they are the very same things that spur the youth that follow me into action, for good or for ill? I guess I'll find out. Think I'll pass on buying this set. Perhaps cheaper availability of DYRL will appear in the future.
  12. Depends on the film and upon the actors. Most films and most actors, it's not a problem. But even in the best of films and with the best actors, dialog sometimes just doesn't come out. On some rare ocassions I do turn to subtitles or look up the script online. Not sure why that happens (my hearing is excellent) but it does. I often doubly surprised when I fail to hear dialog properly because I watch a LOT of film and most dialog is context, so even if I don't hear the exact words, I understand the context. When both fail, it's a surreal moment I found every actor firing on all cylinders in this final film, as was generally the case for the whole series. The acting has been really strong throughout, but I particularly enjoy the buddy team of Michael Cain and Christian Bale. Whether funny or dramatic, they are excellent together. I'd watch a film just with those two bantering with each other
  13. Just got back from The Dark Knight Rises. Very pleased. A solid film and a fine finish to the trilogy. Bale's Batman was awesome yet again (with one of the best comedic lines in the entire film), Hardy's Bane was every bit as vicious and terrifying as I could have hoped and Anne Hathaway simply OWNS Catwoman....WOW! I think The Dark Knight will likely remain my favorite of the three films, but Rises is just that special kind of film that will create a lot of debate about which fans like more. Well done Nolan and company! Thank you for one of the best movie trilogies of all time. BRAVO!
  14. HAHAHAAHA! This reminds me of my father complaining about all the problems he suffered trying to construct an impractical building designed by those "brain-dead" architects I guess some things never change, only the venue does, hehehe.
  15. Some new information and reactions about Pacific Rim featured on Slashfilm. http://www.slashfilm.com/pacific-rim-footage-shown-comiccon-guillermo-del-toro-spills-jaeger-kaiju-details-comiccon-2012/
  16. Yeah, I've seen it. Jane's 10-minute fan film is hands down THE BEST the Punisher has ever been in Live Action. I can only hope the film studios can become as excited by this as I am.
  17. Slashfilm just released a video review of "Dredd". All three of the critics really liked the film and said it was a solid old school action movie that really succeeds where most of these other retro-style flicks fail. For anyone who is interested, the link is here: http://www.slashfilm.com/video-blog-dredd-harkens-action-films-eighties-comiccon-2012/
  18. Maybe I'm a little more relaxed about it, since these types of promotional edits have been done before. I've seen them at pre-release soirees and the occasional film festival. But I admit I do share at least some of your nervousness simply because these types of "objectionable content" edits keep rearing their ugly head with far too much frequency for my liking. I guess the battle against censorship really does never end, it just really makes my eyes roll when it's done to a production that is so old that it should be beyond such pettiness. Since new fans of such an old film will be in the minority, such puritanical alterations only serve to infuriate us old fans
  19. This looks amazing. I'd love to see this.
  20. I always loved the proportions of the Hasegawa Battroids, but I don't know if they would translate/transform well into a nicely proportioned fighter. It would be really cool if they did, because I've long felt the Hasegawa battroid was the definitive non-animated version of the VF-1 Valkyrie robot mode.
  21. I do have to check it out. I've seen Devils Backbone (loved it) and the Hellboy films (okay, but not great); I have a lot of faith in Del Toro as a creative director, but I guess I'm just waiting for the next film of his that I really like. Pacific Rim looks like it could be it. I hope and pray.
  22. I've never been a huge fan of Del Toro beyond Devil's Backbone, but I can't recall the last time I wanted a movie to succeed this much. I want Pacific Rim to be a good film for certain, but more than that I really want it to be popular and make a ton of money. If it does, it opens the door for the mecha genre in live action film. If the movie fails, it could be decades - or maybe never - that we see a proper mecha movie even attempted. At best we could hope for something like District 9, but nothing bigger. So much is riding on Pacific Rim, it's going to give me a heart condition. Oh you cruel gods, please let this be the film every potential filmmaker can point to and say "See, this kinda of mecha movie can work! Finance me!"
  23. Most likely this is just the promotional edit. Doubtful those scenes will be missing from the release, though it wouldn't be the first time. Regardless, very happy to hear the film is looking good and sounding even better.
  24. What bizarre timing; I just happen to be working on an update to the "Books" section of my own website and then saw this thread. I'll make sure to note the 1983 date in the revised page. EDIT, I checked my own book and can confirm the printing date is 1983 within the contents page.
  25. Very impressive! The cinematography and effects are definitely at a very impressive professional level. The introduction of the Regulds were especially well done and I like how they teased you with glimpses. It's was also rather strange how the Regulds in flight were done in a very new and different way, yet were somehow instantly familiar as anime creations. Well done all around.
