  1. Thanks charger69. I've grabbed myself a copy of this issue, as well as some other Great Mechanics books as well.
  2. no3ljm I appreciate the enthusiasm. Enjoy charger69 Yes, I have seen this image in a few of my art books, although the image you've posted may very well be the biggest and best version of this particular drawing that I have seen! This "Great Mechanics - Summer G" book, is it available or relatively easy to obtain? I'd really like to purchase a copy. akteon I appreciate the thanks. I hope you enjoy all the content. There's lots to see, so make sure you visit all the sections of the site.
  3. Almost feels like reference being drawn for a movie. If only
  4. jenius Thanks, it's important that I include as much accurate reference as possible, in the best quality possible. wmkjr I hope you like the new "Destroid Work" colored art in the Macross Frontier section, given that it is your avatar Scyla Thanks for saying so. I really appreciate the thanks from fans. It's always good to hear. And I'm really glad it's something folks really enjoy. Seti88 Thank for saying so, it means a lot. Make sure to carefully go over the site and refer back to the "Updates" for a comprehensive list of all the new material. There is so much in this update to see. You don't want to miss any of it. Primus1X There were hundredes of corrections and revisions to do for the written trivia as well. I worked hard to try to credit as many designs directly to the artists as I could. Junya Ishigaki's credits were all revised. I also tried hard to correct grammar and spelling where I could. And of course, add as much accurate, official trivia as is possible. The Macrosspedia not only features a lot of NEW entries, but dozens of the existing entries have been corrected/revised/expanded. With as many citations as possible, so fans can cross reference the content. Thank you for the kind words. I hope this update is worthwhile for you and everyone. BTW, if you ever notice anything that might need a correction, don't be shy. Let me know Kelsain It was never my intention to take so long for this next update, but that's all on me. I just wish I had so much more time for the site. If only I could get paid to do this There is a LOT to look at and much to read. So make sure to take your time and enjoy!
  5. December 6, 2015 Major Update - We Remember Love! It has been five years since the last update to the Macross Mecha Manual and it is time to remember some mecha love. Despite a lengthy absence, today marks the largest update ever completed for the website. The combined total of debut profiles and revised profiles amount to over 250 new individual pieces of artwork featured across the website. I do appreciate all the emails and love fans have for the website, but please remember the M3 is an archive (not an active news or community website) so updates will remain infrequent. Today's update to the Macross Mecha Manual features 63 new profiles. The task for this latest update is to share colored Macross artwork unavailable elsewhere. In much the same way the Zentradi artwork was improved, numerous other mecha are now showcased with enhanced colored art. It is my hope the new colored art will continue to distinguish my website from others and from the artwork found in official publications like the Macross Chronicle. Similarly, all gun pods and missiles site-wide have been revised with new scans and enhanced coloring to give these memorable weapons a place to shine. Other additions include improved black and white line art sections with some new line art pieces not previously featured on the M3 website. There are two standout features in this update. First is the debut of the Macross Technical Manual, a new dedicated webpage for all fan-made analysis and technical guides about the Macross universe. The debut of this webpage features an article discussing the "Firepower of the GU-11 Gun Pod". The second standout feature of the update is the presentation of fan-made artwork by the talents of Jeff Sorley, Neldorwen, lazyMK, Daniel Dugarte/vectormz and others. These artists have created line art that has either been redrawn from rare published source books or they have drawn completely original pieces based upon the animation. This update features dozens of these pieces for fans to enjoy. Another feature in this update is the revision of common/support vehicles. Since variable fighters, robots and ships are the stars of the Macross series those designs were prioritized for the Macross Mecha Manual. Most other vehicles were added only to provide a varied catalogue of content. Lacking sources for Macross line art and color reference meant many of these common/support vehicles were featured in tiny, poor-quality scans with inaccurate colors. Now with a much larger book collection at my disposal, many vehicles have been scanned in high resolution and feature superior colors. I have also added a small portion of new vehicles - some not found colored in any Macross publication - to once again add a little variety to the website catalogue. Still other features of note in this update come thanks to the release of the Macross franchise on the Blu-Ray format. The benefit of these High Definition releases is access to sharp, vivid color reference from which to build better art for this website. All pre-existing screenshots site-wide have been upgraded to High Definition and numerous new additional screenshots have been added, many of which help highlight those blink-and-miss vehicles that some viewers may have overlooked. A few final additions to round out the update are several new profiles for the More Mecha section. These additions feature mechanical designs from Neon Genesis Evangelion and The Vision of Escaflowne. As always, make sure to Refresh the webpages you view and/or clear your browser cache to view the new pictures that have replaced existing artwork. 6. I finished Jessica Jones and it is another solid Marvel show for Netflix, with plenty of style, good story, fun filmmaking, engaging characters and some really smart dialog. However, it does also suffer from some examples of poor dialog, some half-baked characters and some pacing issues. Krysten Ritter is amazing in the role and really enjoys the benefit of a lot of clever dialog which she puts to excellent use with a droll, snarky delivery. The music is also excellent, really capturing that film-noir feel but also mixing it with some modern styles. The supporting cast is generally strong, especially Carrie Ann Moss as the attorney Jeri Hogarth and Mike Colter as Luke Cage. Moss' Hogarth is a take-charge lesbian lawyer played as a verbal foil to Ritter's Jones and possibly setting up an intriguing "frenemy" relationship between the two characters for future seasons. Colter as Luke Cage is all subtle confidence and strength while having an engaging backstory which expertly colors his rough relationship with Jessia Jones. And of course, David Tennant's inspired turn as the super villian Kilgrave is magnetic even before we ever see him appear on screen. The dreadful build toward his reveal is almost as good as his performance in the rest of the season. The show also downplays the fact that it is a super hero show in some respects. This could just be a result of how the show is written more as a detective tale and thriller and the opportunity for action simply isn't there. The show does regularly remind the audience of Jessica's powers, but it's a rather non-super hero-y for a super hero series. I liken it to Guardians of the Galaxy, which is sold as a super hero film but comes across far more as space opera action/adventure, right down to the very non-super visualization of most of the characters (and obviously, Jessica Jones is far less fantastical in setting and story). The discussion of powers does lead into one of the critcisms I have for the show; the action. The series does have one or two interesting action sequences, but by far the action is passable at best and noticeably bad at worst. The show - despite being about a super strong hero - is not written as an action adventure, so the such scenes are less frequent. But I do feel as though the creators were very uninterested in the action, almost as if they never wanted to film the sequences or were forced to do so because of the producers/studio. The result is uninspired, though perhaps it may not have been so noticable on it's own. However, one can't help but compare Jessica Jones to Netflix's other super hero series Daredevil, a show which - although sometimes over-indulging in too many action scenes - nonetheless delivered some of the most engaging and artfully shot action sequences in television history. One can't be blamed for feeling disappointed. The dialog in the show is generally one of the greatest strengths of the writing. Most of the best lines are saved for Ritter's abrasive Jessica Jones, who dispenses funny and witty one-liners whether she's suffering no fools or bowing to the absurdity around her. The best dialog scenes often include Jessica and Hogarth or Jessica and Kilgrave, but dramatically there are numerous compelling exchanges between Jessia and Cage and Jessica and her estranged best friend Trish Walker (played by Rachael Taylor). Despite a few eye-rolling (and borderline offensive) girl-power pieces of dialog, the show also offers some subtle feminist themes as well. The super power of the antagonist Kilgrave is functionally a manifestation of invisible privelage (specifically, male privelage) and also informs the wonderful character depth for Tennant's Kilgrave. Jessica struggles often parallel women's struggles, from PTSD and rape to more subtle challenges like her own agency and gender inequality. I am not surprised in the least the predictable backlash against the show from the internet's misogynist quarters, which means it's hitting all the right buttons to face an issue many would just as soon try to shout down. I found the subtext topical and subversive, the kind of commentary we got when shows like Star Trek The Next Generation were still airing. I also think this commentary is incredibly important given that Jessica Jones is a super hero property from Marvel, a studio that has been justly criticized for their lack of female film representation for years. Overall, Jessica Jones is a hit. I'm definitely onboard for the next season. As expected, comparisons to Daredevil are inevitable, but the two shows have their own strengths. I'll be watching both, even if I tend to prefer the execution of Daredevil a little more in spite of Jessica Jones' stronger story. 4 out of 5.
  7. The VF-25F does have backpack thrusters, six of them in two banks of 3 thrusters each. But they are small and mounted underneath the rear fuselage just in front of the shield-mounting section. There is almost no art for them, so I don't blame folks for being completely unware the thrusters exist. The only image I have is from Macross Frontier Archives: 3D & Setting Document Collection which I think is more for the plastic models than actual line art. There has still yet to be any mention of the backpack thrusters in the official trivia, although the Variable Fighter Master Files may provide details I've not yet read or seen. Image attached.
  8. I think folks are overeacting to this video. According to the official trivia, mobile suits in the Gundam universe have several different "system/operation modes". Gundam's resident online expert, Mark Simmons, long ago translated this description from Entertainment Bible No. 1. In addition to confirming the operation of a mobile suit are almost completely computer controlled, it also specifically describes what are known as "system modes" used within operational "sequences" depending upon the part of the mission in which the mobile suit is being piloted. There are numerous system modes, like "shooting", "melee", "cruising", etc. The pilot in the video to Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt that's being linked in this thread could simply be operating his mobile suit in a single mode in which the controls act like simplified flight or throttle controls. Hence the animation. EDIT: found the exact thread on the MAHQ forums http://www.mechatalk.net/viewtopic.php?p=111784#p111784 Very informative
  9. According to the animation and the official trivia, Britai is supposed to be significantly taller than other Zentradi. So the scale is pretty much bang on. I made a chart for the M3 which is mostly accurate.
  10. SchizophrenicMC I think some of your points are unfair criticisms that are being analyzed in a vacuum. Global's action to fold the Macross - as disastrous as it was - saved the humans from total defeat. There would not have been a Space War I and the humans would have been conquered right there on South Ataria Island had the SDF-1 Macross not escaped and drawn the enemy from Earth. Also, Global is not a main character, he is supporting cast and is B-story fodder at best. So of course his character arc and his actions will be half-baked, subject to plot, and suffer as a result of being written in support of the A-story, like ALL supporting characters (hello Max!). Because we are not told the story from Global's perspective and only see the consequences of his actions that are written for plot, often times he can appear ineffectual and unintelligent. That is not a character weakness, that is necessity of a story that is focused entirely about the characters of Hikaru, Minmay and Misa. And on the subject of Hikaru, Minmay and Misa, let's not lose sight that ALL drama (especially melodrama like Macross) needs to artificially prolong the conflict and sexual tension between characters in a love triangle until end of the series can resolve that status quo with a sufficient climax. Many dramas are guilty of this, especially those dramas that manufacture perpetual character relationships when their past conflicts would have permanently ended any normal relationship between two such people in the real world. That's not a flaw or fault of a particular era of Japanese anime, that's a conceit of ALL melodrama, including much of our current entertainment, such as most of the super hero shows currently airing on North American television. Putting aside Yamato (which has to be it's own thing), I can say that the balance of forces in Macross has to be carefully structured for the sake of audience perception of the protagonists and antagonists. Make the Zentradi too overwhelming and the UN Spacy and your mighty VF-1 Valkyrie (for which you're trying to sell toys) comes across as useless and ineffectual. Make the Zentradi too ineffectual and they come across as no threat. So yes, SDF Macross has it's own balance of the two, which I feel sometimes made the Zentradi feel like silly comic book villains. But IMO, they redeemed themselves by wiping out most of the Earth
  11. I don't necessarily want Macross Delta (or all Macross) to be melee-focused either, but I have to say the lack of hand-to-hand combat in the Macross universe has always worked AGAINST the fiction, not for it. The whole point of a robot Battroid mode is the environment manipulation. Walk, run, jump, climb, lift, carry, etc. You want it to do everything a regular soldier can do, including hand-to-hand combat. Which is why soldiers are trained how to box, takedown and incapcitate. Jet fighters, helicopters and other weapon delivery platforms do not do (nor need to do) any of this. I'm sure folks can imagine many other uses for Battroids, as can I. But none of those "reasons" have any practical place within the context of a Macross anime, in which the overwhelming majority of mecha scenes are action and battle. Which is why critics of mecha often complain about suspending their disbelief to imagine giant robot war machines. Why spend the money and resources to develop such a complex, expensive robot just so it can shoot a missile or fire a gun the same as any tank, jet fighter or helicopter can already accomplish for a fraction of the cost, time and effort? I very much appreciate when Macross at least includes some aspects of melee combat in most productions because it makes so little sense to feature giant robots without it. The Macross valkyries need to be punching, kicking, wrestling, bayoneting or batoning giant Zentradi, powered armor suits, Protodeviln or Vajra in melee battle. Otherwise, there's no point in a valkyrie transforming into a giant robot.
  12. An excellent trailer. They are playing to all the strengths of the Captain America character and his best parts even in the ensemble films. Chris Evan's performances also continues to get better and better with each movie he makes, and he was already a good actor. And again, the brilliance of Winter Soldier's timely social commentary seems to be now hard coded into the DNA of the Captain America stories for the MCU; this civil war might take some of those political themes and subtext to a new level given the broader implications of the Civil War story line. And wow, the action looks just incredible. These last two films are solid action flicks even without all the rest of the great material within each of them. Years ago when the MCU was just getting started, I never expected to like the Captain America character. Especially after that first medicore standalone film, despite Evan's empathetic performance. But The Avengers and then The Winter Soldier turned the character around, especially his fight against that state of fear in his own country. Now, I find Captain America one of the more interesting characters in an already strong cast of heros. Very excited for this next film!
  13. I'm not bothered by it, but most mecha anime do require a suspension of disbelief on the part of the viewer for a number of common tropes. Giant robot control is definitely one such trope. From what I understand, the control systems in Macross are not a 1:1 input/output schema. The control movements of the pilot are translated into much more complex (but pre-programmed) movements of the robot itself. Granted, such an automated control system is likely to limit the number of "available moves" any given destroid or valkyrie might perform but makes for a very simplified interface and operation of such a complex vehicle. I assume a lot of the movement of a destroid or battroid is automated for the sake of both simplicity and efficiency. For example, why would one want a control system that forces the pilot to individually perform every arm/wrist/hand/leg/knee/foot movement required for a destroid/battroid to simply stand upright from a prone position? One could argue that pre-programmed movements also makes performance much faster and reduces reaction time compared to more fully controllable but "linear" movement system. After all, if one flick of the pilot's wrist immediately activates ten different individual movements, just think of the advantages and speed one could achieve. A fully active pilot performing vehicle control at his peak would effectively be able to double or triple the number of actions his own body could perform in the same amount of time. Exceptional pilots might even tax the control system of their destroid/valkyrie by forcing it to move faster than is mechanically tolerable for the vehicle. Such nuances in control might explain why AVF prototype mecha like the YF-19 and YF-21 were so dangerous and difficult to control during their development cycles (ie, the YF-19 test pilot roster in Macross Plus) The official trivia does make mention of onboard Super AI systems for the Macross Plus era valkyries, which would confirm that at least some automated design for the destroid/valkyrie control systems. The Brain Wave control systems were not a part of the first few generations of valkyries (and still are very limited in modern valkyries). Such systems play little to no part in the majority of valkyrie control.
  14. If it's relevant to Macross Delta, you can post it here. If not, just build a dedicated thread.
  15. Watched the first 3 episodes of Netflix new Marvel super hero series "Jessica Jones" and gotta say, we've got another hit on our hands folks! Easily as good as Netflix' other Marvel series "Daredevil", perhaps even better! Jessica, as played by Krysten Ritter, is a fascinating character, equal parts haunted and vulnerable yet a street-wise, witty and believably lethal action hero. The dialog is very sharp and funny, the supporting cast (including Carrie Ann Moss) are intriguing, and David Tennant's "Kilgrave" is utterly terrifying despite being nearly unseen thus far. I also must praise the gorgeous cinematography and the music is raw retro-film noir sexiness. Only criticisms I have is that the pacing is a little slow, the series is kinda light on action and the action sequences are not as good as they were in Daredevil, basing this on just the first 3 episodes. But the rest is all win. Charging boldy forward with more as time permits. This is an excellent series and I'm instantly a fan of this character. If it all turns out well, I'll be watching a lot more of this show in the next few years.
  16. Going to be watching in starting tonight. I'm glad to hear you liked it, which is another voice to join the chorus of reliable folks who have written very positive advance reviews. I'm looking forward to this.
  17. The ship we see in the Macross Delta trailer is shown from what I beleive is a top and rear angle. It has many of the specific details of the Stealth Space Cruiser from Macross Frontier including the grey/blue hull colors, the blue gemstone-like dome on the top rear and the FOUR distinct outboard sections. For the next update to the Macross Mecha Manual, I scanned in some new images for this craft. They are still kinda small and low quality, but they are the best images I can find and they should allow you to see more details of the ship that I've posted about. I'll attach the images here.
  18. Yeah no worries. I was more thinking out loud Actually, fixating more on various parts of the Macross Delta trailer made me think not just about fold effects in the new show, but also space craft. We do see what I am convinced is the "Stealth Space Cruiser" from Macross Frontier. It's from a different angle than we've seen before, but I'm almost certain it's the same design. We have typically seen at least two-three new large ship designs for the UNS/NUNS in each Macross production (often more than 2-3), so I wonder if we'll see a new design in Macross Delta as well.
  19. According to what I've read, there would be 13 SDF Macross-class ships in total, the original SDF-1 plus the twelve SDFN ships, which are the mass production versions of the SDF-1. The SDF-2 construction was halted just after the final battle of Space War I in February 2010. Construction resumed sometime thereafter, but the priority of the UNG changed after Space War I in that they wanted colonization ships. So the SDF-2 was redesigned while still under construction into the Megaroad-01, a colonization vessel. Yes, the Megaroad became a class of ship and there were many built. Most recent trivia I know is there were at least 13 vessels of the Megaroad class commissioned.
  20. The space folding in the original SDF Macross was more elaborate than that, even if it was often animated somewhat differently from one scene to the next. There was always some attempt to show the "incursion" of super dimension space into our space, whether via a sphere of energy around the ship or a bright white "glow" that surrounded the vessel(s) and the surrounding space (often used for Zentradi defolding). They also tried to show the "swap" effect, the idea that super dimension space appears around the vessel and then that SD space is replaced with normal space at the desired destination. Lastly, when depicting a scene inside a vessel that is folding the animatiors would use a "ghosting" effect, a visual cue to let the audience know that a space fold was taking place. In Do You Remember Love?, the space fold of Britai's Nupetiet-Vergnitzs Class Fleet Command Battleship actually involved a lot of forward momentum followed by a illuminated "halo" effect once that craft disappeared from real space. The defold effect, both for Britai's ship and for the VT-1 Super Ostrich on Earth seemed to show the super dimension swapping of energy around the craft, just animated slightly differently (with more of an electrical effect). The Meltran Gunboat space fold did appear to be the simplest fold shown in the Macross franchise up to that point, a glowing disappearance of the craft almost without any kind of visible super dimension energy anywhere beyond the silhouette of the ship itself, with the exception of some "lightning-like discharging" briefly seen around the ship. In Macross Plus computer generated effects were used to enhance this folding effect with a vibrant multi-colored display, but still generated a type of incursion of super dimension energy, which appeared to snatch away the folding space craft. As I recall, Macross Plus was the first time to show an EXTERIOR shot of a spaceship while it was folding space, the visualization of which almost looked like a "bubble bath" environment of exotic energy waves. Super dimension space almost looked "filled" with energy waves, energy shapes and energy objects, a medium that had to be "pushed" or "maneuvered" through, causing the space folding craft to be jostled about by turbulence as it travelled, rather than flying unerringly in a straight line through a vast, open and empty corridor. Macross 7 seemed to largely embraced the Meltran-style folding from DYRL? for most of the space folds seen in the series, particularly the Varauta vessels. We'll have to wait to see what they do in Macross Delta, if they include space folding in Macross Delta in any significant way. They may just follow suit with what was done in Macross Frontier, or a variation thereof. If the action of the Macross Delta story is more localized, there may not be a plot opportunity to include space folding. I hope that's not the case, but it could be a possibility.
  21. Relativistic travel could theoretically allow us to travel across more than half the known universe in under a human liftetime. But the problem is that eons would pass for everyone else left on Earth (or whatever other stations or satellites we happen to be inhabiting at the time). Likely by time a relativistic traveller got even 1% of the way across the universe, humanity will have long since discovered a way to travel across the vastness of interstellar space that is far easier and effectively "faster" I always thought the way fold travel was originally conceived in Macross (swapping super dimension space with three-dimensional space (real space) was a rather innovative spin in the annals of science fiction concepts for Faster Than Light or "effective" FTL methods of travel. However I can't help but be a little disappointed that the concept of folding space in Macross has been visualized far more "conventionally" (at least by sci-fi standards) as the franchise has moved on. The computer generated effects have improved the visual presentation of space folding, particularly in Macross Plus and Macross Frontier. But the process has become more linear and familiar at the same time, the "spacecraft flying through a glowing tunnel" kind of thing that now every sci-fi franchise seems to have universally adopted. As much as I didn't really care much for the new movie Interstellar, I must admit travelling through the wormhole in that film was probably the most innovative FTL effects sequence I've seen in sci-fi for many, many years. At least from a visual point of view, every sci-fi franchise used to have at least an interesting, unique way of presenting FTL, including Star Wars and Star Trek. I feel like Macross kinda lost some of the FTL uniqueness over time and despite the action looking prettier thanks to CG animation and particle effects, the practical process has become a bit banal. I get the feeling that Macross Delta might not have that much to do with fold travel given the setting of the story. Maybe more will come of the setting and locations as more news about the series is released (or maybe we'll just have to wait and see the series itself to know). But so far the scope of the action leads me to believe fold travel won't be a major part of the plot. Here's hoping I'm mistaken.
  22. I love stories like that. It's so amazing how motivated we are for those things that really drive our passion. I remember way back in the day paying so much money for some of the Macross products and while I always lamented paying so much money, I was always motivated to find some way to make it work. During those years I lacked proper employment, I'd sacrifice spending on all kinds of things just to save enough money to buy the Macross products I wanted. I remember particularly when buying the early Yamato toys and even the Animeigo DVD set of SDF Macross I'd go to great lengths to get them. Even now, searching all over for old, long discontinued and out-of-print Macross books, magazines, video games doesn't seem like all that big a deal to me because I'm used to it, but it's a real time and money sink. But what can we do if we love Macross?
  23. It's moving along fast. I'm still several episodes behind, but determined to catch up
