I just used a krylon-brand enamel primer before any painting. I'm confident it would hold, but it's always better to sand things first. A fine grit, wet-sand paper would be enough I would think. The VF-171D (I imagine that's what it is) just looks plain without it. I wonder if it would look better with the gray head and the red clown nose on top of it. Either way it looks really good.
