Discussing Gundam Seed's cast members in my recent thread made me think up a little question for you guys. I am not looking for this thread to become a dub/sub war. I am just curious.

In your opinion what was the best done English dub you've heard?

Also, what was the worst dub?

Feel free to throw in honorable mentions for the two categories if you like as well.

For me the absolute worst dub I have ever had the displeasure of listening to doing a spot check was the Love Hina dub. I raced for the language change on that one. Especially after hearing Kitsune.

The best dub award I would give to Cowboy Bebop's dub. I did not have a single problem with it at all. Well done.

My favorite dub is from the Oh My Goddess! OAVs, the one time where I actually prefer the dub to the sub. A fun side note is that the English voice actors for the main characters ended up getting married in real life .

I'm quite surprised at the number of people who like the Trigun dub ... Vash's voice is just terrible! I also have to say that, while I tolerate the Gundam dubs, I really hate the one guy (he was Duo's voice in wing) who does ALL the background voices, it's like they just shut him in a studio and just made him talk to himself for 3 hours. But the worst dub has got to be Speed Racer! Still a totally wicked show though!

I will say the Gasaraki Dub was decent though.

I agree, the bebop dub is extremely weak compared with the Japanese track.

I really can't understand why anyone praises the Macross Plus dub. Aside from the script being way off a good share of the time, the SFX & BG being entirely replaced in ep 4, and the use of robotech voice actors...well, do I need anymore reason than that?

And how the hell can anyone watch Mahoromatic dubbed? That's just so....wrong! I tried listening to one of Mahoro's little songs, and immediately switched back to the Japanese for safety.

That's where you got me. I cannot remember the names of these people to save my life. All I can say right now is "the guy that played Spike also played Ryuga in Mahoromatic". Stuff like that. I can associate Richard Cox, Crispin Freeman, and Wendee Lee directly, but that's it. Eventually I'll pick up some more of the names.

You're spot on with both posts excapt you missed one. WHoever did the voice of "Serena" for the Sailor Moon S dubb on cartoon network is without a doubt the worst VA in anime history. SHe makes Reba West's VA sound like the voice of an angel. It's that bad. For whatever insane reason I ahd at the time I tried to watch one of those "newly dubebd" Sailor Moon episodes (the previous VA was also terrible) and I feel like my life ahs been shortened by 5 years for watchign that crap. Yes, it's that bad.

(can't stand the German stance of dubbing everything, including interviews -though I do admire the work they put into it)

galaxy express dub is available through viz.roger corman did a version of it in the early 1980's which is suppossed to suck real bad.and i met reba west at a robotech convention in 1986 in valley forge, pennsylvania.

Wow, nobody mentioned "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" & "Kiki's Delivery Service" as having truly awful dubs. Come on, Kirsten Dunst is already one of the worst Hollywood actresses around, and she does the voice for Kiki? Arrrggghhh!!!

I was trying to watch "Laputa" the other day with the gf. Since she is used to watching films in English, we watched the dub version. Eventually, she lost interest and fell asleep. (With the awful acting we were listening to, I can't say I blame her.) Then I switched over to the Japanese track. Much better.

Why is it that Disney has to dumb down the voice acting for children. Do they actually think kids are stupid?

On the other hand, the dub for "Spirirted Away" ("Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi") wasn't that bad. At least, they got a 13 year old to play Chihiro.
