HG and Robotech Debates

I don't know about the others, but I really like this picture:

Mylene Sterling

It's funny. It's like, what is she doing there?

If the person who did that, only new anything about Macross, they would've realized that the appeal of Firebomber was the fact that they aren't part of the military. That's probably JANICE (Jugs And Nipple Implants Certainly Enhance) emulating someone else from a distant universe.

Being MORE AWESOME THAN shadow chronicles, obviously.

Quoted for Effin' TRUTH.

if RT fan artist keep mooching macross characters at this rate, pretty soon we'll be seeing fanarts of sheryl nome being Capt Gloval's bastard child with minmay. or ranka lee as kyle's daughter.

i will never underestimate their capacity to come up with situations of how that will happen.

But there are enough like that that any self-respecting Robotech fan should by all rights feel at least a twinge of embarrassment.

Oh, we do. I have talked about this at length on other boards. Its, basically, intellectual laziness. There is nothing wrong with having a crossover, but its a whole 'nother ball of wax to basically import whole cloth from a different universe.

Officially, that's happened 4 times already and stuck. Remember?

Do you understand the modern concept of Intellectual Property? The international owners of the various IPs that made up Robotech had no problem with what happened. Entirely separate idea.

Yes, but if all companies can do with it is a Shadow Chronicles and a Voltron Force, what's the point? They may own rights to various stuff that's important to a franchise's survival, but they can't really do much with it. They're always going to be judged by the original works that while they have the rights over, they do not have control over the talent that made the works special enough to generate interest. They're stuck making derivatives, and openly and embarrassingly shallow ones at best, slapping the franchise's name on it, and hoping for the best.

Plenty do.

Depends. Some people can take a franchise and make a goldmine out of it. Others can't.

Its no different than what happens with a novel that becomes a movie/Tv franchise. There will almost always be adaptation decay. People will almost always compare it to the book etc. Also, making derivative works isn't necessarily a bad thing.

So would you say that Robotech is doing fine these days using that reasoning?

Of course not. The person in charge of the franchise is a self-aggrandizing weasel. If it doesn't originate as 'his idea', it basically doesn't get done. There were many, many things that HG could have done that would have revitalized the franchise. They didn't do them thanks to Tommy Yune.

To go back to this point for a moment....

Fairly good primer for getting people to rethink IP and how it relates to the market. Harmony Gold, via Tommy Yune, is most certainly NOT connecting with fans. That, right there, is the main failure of the Robotech franchise as it exists now. Robotech.com is basically a joke that offers next to nothing for fans. Had it actually been done properly, you would be able to access all kinds of content such as lineart, more expansive profiles of mecha, characters etc. As it is, its a half-arsed joke. There is nothing there to keep fans interested. Kinda pathetic, truth be told.

The Yune regime will never learn to connect with fans. Why? Because they are feral fanboys themselves, and their nature is to try to be the top of the feral fanboy hill. The problem with that? Fanboys are infamous for never turning out anything other than shitty fanfic, by their nature they are "not" creative, and incapable of seeing anything outside of what was already made. This is why such people should "never" be in charge of a franchise. So on one hand, of course they don't want to share information, since that could potential put other fans on "equal terms" in regards to what they know. And on the other hand, they can't share information, since people would immediately see that they're shysters....which is way old news :)

As for the pie, you'd think being attacked by their own kind would have made them think about how they're handling things, but obviously all it id was empower them to do it harder.

Honestly, this could go in circles. Basically, you can come up with good things for HG to follow, things to consider, things to do, and great ideas overall, but if Tommy didn't think of it, it'll never get done. That goes to what Keith just said. The Yune only thinks of that franchise as a hill of fans that he is on top of. If another fan does something just as good, or more creative, or anywhere to threaten his fragile hut on top of that hill, he does what he can to knock all those down.

It's also like the Wizard from Wizard of Oz. He's trying to get as many people to think he's big, great, and all powerful, but in reality, all he's done is barely being held together. That's when, (cue big announcement from HG) they default to the original Robotech, re-re-re-released for your pure enjoyment, as if you've never seen it before.

You know, not counting original series releases, I wonder how many copies of Robotech that the remaining fanbase owns now.

The first thing I would change about the bloody RT site would be that "Coming Soon" bit at the top. It means nothing because there is certainly nothing coming "soon"!!!! It should be retitled "Future Projects" and have some concrete info (what there is, of course) about what is coming up *eventually*.

How long has that "Coming Soon" thing been there for??
