Quantum of Solace 007 thread

This bond movie aint a bond movie. No Q? Where is Q? You cannot have a bond movie without Q! At least you had some gadgets in Casino Royal. I was expecting Bond's car was bullet proof and cool gadgets like land mine deployments, standard rockets/missiles, and machineguns. Bond's car is getting shot to crap and he pulls out his MP5N or some submachine gun.

Camera placement was so damn confusing I couldnt tell what bond was doing or what the bad guys were doing. The car chase gave me headaches. The rundown was confusing who was throwing what punches when bond was fighting the double agent. Yeah the camera is suppose be like you are right there in the chase/fight but if I am playing the game Quantum of Solace, fine. Movie: no.

The dialog? What dialog!?!? There was no memorable quips. Casino Royal has some memorable ones like Bond was getting his balls beaten and his response was "Now the whole world's gonna know that you died scratching my balls!" Daniel Craig did a decent job in Casino Royal but here he is deadly serious all the time.

And the women... He only tagged Miss Fields. What happened to the end where Bond is finally able to tag the leading lady?!?! All he did was to help he get her revenge. In every bond movie he gets the girl (except the end of Casino Royal but technically Vesper). Is it cheesy? Sure but it is Bond.

And what was wrong with Pierce Brosnan? I like him as Bond. He was better than Timothy Dalton. Pierce was perfect for the job.

This bond movie aint a bond movie.

By those standards, neither was Casino Royale. And perhaps those very criteria, ironically, are what is responsible for the franchise's rejuvenation. People other than grognard Bond fans are actually interested in seeing them.

And what was wrong with Pierce Brosnan?

Shrinking box office numbers was what was wrong with Brosnan.

Actually, as loathe as I am to defend any Brosnan Bond film other than Goldeneye, this was not the issue. In fact, Die Another Day (easily the Worst. Bond. Ever.) was the highest grossing Bond until Casino Royale took the title away.

1. there were gadgets, most business cards aren't tracking devices and most tables don't have an uber version of MS surface

2. camera placement was not confusing, if you can't tell the difference between an aston martin with no door, a jeep and an alfa romero, that's too bad.

3. there were plenty of quips, for instance, just because they weren't delivered with a wink and a nod to the camera doesn't mean they weren't there.

4. and yes, a few days after the love his life dies after betraying him, the only person he ever let himself be vulnerable with, of course Bond is going to fart every girl he sees.

I stand corrected.

Though it still seems reasonable to suspect that the studios were looking to broaden the appeal of the franchise.

Though it still seems reasonable to suspect that the studios were looking to broaden the appeal of the franchise.

That's a fair assessment, I think. After DAD I think even EON realized just how creatively bankrupt the franchise had become. Which brings me to what I consider one of the great ironies of the Bond series. Brosnan had always pushed to not only do a much darker and serious story, but he'd always wanted to do Casino Royale (I remember reading about him having a hardcover first edition, back when he first got the role). Then after EON sat around for a number of years trying to figure out just WTF to do with the series, Brosnan passed his "best before" date and walked away....only to have EON produce exactly the movie he'd lobbied them to produce. Granted he wouldn't have worked as CR's newly-minted 00 agent, but its no small wonder he seems a little bitter over the experience.

Anyway, I think QoS more than likely suffered from the writers strike. On CR, Paul Haggis took a final pass at the script that usual suspects Purvis & Wade had hacked out. Given the hurried timeline for QoS to not only slip under the strike deadline, but to meet the pre-set release date, you have to wonder if he even read past the first act, much less contributed to the script.

I enjoyed QoS, the car chase was very Bondesque, the scene with Agent Fields on the bed face down was unmistakeable fanservice. The aerial dog fight was incredible. Judy Dench did an amazing job as M...again. For those who call it James Bourne you can have your Dalton, Lazenby and Moore Bonds, I prefer the fromage with crackers. A couple people have mentioned that Quantum is a revisioned SPECTER, it could be because I cannot accept that Dominick Greene was the head of Quantum. Also for the first time the title of the movie actually means something, Bond is looking for the smallest peice of Solace after Vesper betrayed his love. The Bond in QoS is acting like most men would after the events in CR, throw in Bonds ego and it's very believable how Bond acts in QoS. I enjoyed this movie very much, as a stand alone film it's not as strong as Casino Royale but the two films together are brilliant!

I have to say I enjoyed "Quantum of Soloace" a lot. It had a really strong sense of continuity from the first film, with Bond in a very dark place after Vesper's tragic end. If he was the same cocky, quipping person he was during the first film it would have pretty much jettisoned any integrity in character development... I think we've got a Bond here that you can actually do character development with, rather than the 2-D action hero he's been before (not to knock the original films that I love... I'm just enjoying something fresh).

Personally, I'd be happy if there is ne'er a Q or Moneypenny to be found for the duration. I prefer the subtle nods to the original films... the goofy Bond girl names (Miss Fields' first name, if you watched the credits, was

Strawberry

), the nod to Goldfinger

in her final repose on the bed

.

I do agree with a lot of you on the action editing. The fight with Mitchell around the scaffolding bugged me. There's a point where quick edits cease to punch up urgency and excitement and reach strobing, battling-seizure-robot levels. The instigator of this attention-deficit-disorder editing style needs to experience death by slow torture... with lots of long, slow, cuts ('cause irony is always fun).

Wasn't a bad film, but I saw it a bit too early in the morning to reallypay much attention compared to my old man who was up at 5AM working out : / and waking me up.

He only shagged 1 girl, ONE, and she wasn't even a bond girl per say...shocked :o and they even ditched her only 20 minutes later found dead.

Still though I perfer these kind of bond movies now than what we had in the past with all the gadgets and sporty machine gun totting cars.

So based on your grounds, Dr. No is not a Bond film?

All right - time for another James Bond 007 survey. Rather than resurrect the old survey from the Casino Royale thread, I thought I'd introduce a new one.

For those who have seen every official James Bond film (which means the 1968 Casino Royale satire and the 1983 film Never Say Never Again don't count), rank them from best to worst.
