Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
That's actually the part I really don't get. Like, really cannot comprehend it. You have absolutely overwhelming piles of sources that directly contradict something that they're clinging to like a trademark. And they keep doing it wrong every time. Why? It's not that it's a huge deal, or looks terrible (though the markings shown are pretty bad on this kit), but it's an obvious flaw, and it's like even though it would be incredibly easy to fix, they can't bring themselves to admit it's ever been wrong. It's like that elephant's been in the living room so long, it's now a dead corpse, and Bandai has just gotten used to using it as a foot rest. -
If they're throwing plastic parts in with plastic parts, it shouldn't be that big a deal, my legos can take a lot of shaking without much punishment... but throwing around die cast parts with their plastic ones in the same bin would explain a lot. Heh.. one more potential reason to hate die-cast.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
Actually, no, I don't think any Bandai rendition of the VF-1 has ever had correct chest stripes. They're not horizontal across the chest, they're two angles of sweep. The only horizontal part is across the speed brake area. They've done that wrong since they acquired the original Takatokus, and every instance since then has copied that (incorrect) scheme. -
Holy crap... that is freaking awesome. I'm personally rather astounded that they went to so much effort to make something so "official" looking... even going so far as to make up fake aerodynamic tables, mission profiles, and radar scan mode diagrams. Lots of it is copied straight from F-14 materials, but it's amazing seeing something like that actually made.

Actually, the chances of that might be decently high. I think people are becoming wise to the way the scalper market works, and they aren't forking over scalper pre-orders, so many of them will probably get cancelled come release day. I can't say how many, but it definitely happened with several other releases. It's just a matter of being patient, and being willing to risk not getting one if the pre-orders all sell out. Given the status of this particular release, I'm not expecting it to be as popular as others, though it might beat out the VF-171CF.

Hehe.. one of my friends has a family run auto-shop.. I think he's been working on a Devil-Z for a while, but I haven't heard whether it was finished.

You only get a "pay later" option for preorders. Since they have the item sitting on their shelves now, there's no reason to wait, so if you want to pay later, your best bet is probably a credit card.

Ah, guess they ran out their stock then. They might come up with more, but the price will probably climb soon. And no, the only difference between the original and reissue is about $30 Edit: I should say, used to be about $30. Now they're down to about $5 difference for some reason. I don't honestly know why they even bother listing them separately by now.

I believe someone did it using photoshop, and it looks nice. The black boosters complement the red much better than the baby blue. And they're still on sale at NY, last I checked. Up to about $50 before shipping now, but not unreasonable.

Well, I plan on stripping the stupid white-on-white markings off one set anyway (if not both), so I could just paint one up as Alto's, and keep the dark gray pieces instead of the blue. Still not sure if I have the nerve to strip one down entirely and go for a gray scheme.

Except for the actual 30th valk, which went down. I was hoping they'd have overstocked the super parts the same way, but oh well. Now if I could just find a set of Alto packs for less than the valk itself costs.

Yeesh, maybe demand for these packs is better than I expected, they went up $10 while I was at work. Still not too much for a set, but annoying a bit.

Think I'm going to drop them an order for another set to customize. Surprised, they upgraded shipping on my preorder to FedEx, and I think I only asked for SAL.

Looking more and more awesome by the week. I don't know how complicated it might get, or how well it might work from an electrical standpoint, but it could be fun to have a couple master switches in hidden places, and then rig several lights to go on or off during various stages of transformation. The easiest ones I can think of would be the tails, where you could probably rig contacts into the pivots so the lights only go on when the tails are unfolded. You might be able to do something similar for the wings, depending on how your plan to have them extend/collapse works. The head, you could probably make a contact in the back of the nose section that would power it when folded into battroid position. Same for the nose gear once it's extended. I dont know if little metal contacts would be easier than wires, but I think they might simplify the process of getting power shared amongst all the moving parts, plus help deactivate lights that you might not want turned on if they're hidden.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
There is a launch bar there, but in the complete opposite of some of the Yamato valks, this one's so short you can barely see it between the front tires. But yeah, the gear is mounted so far back under the cockpit, it throws the whole thing off, even if you ignore the ridiculous length of it. Looks kinda like someone hired a clown to make balloon landing gear. On the other hand, the rear gear look like they're made of toothpicks. Better hope you're not actually ever landing on a carrier. I think what's really throwing it off in the side view is the angles of everything though. If the tail section was lifted up to the right position, it'd do a world of good. The nose profile seems off because there's a hump ahead of the canopy, instead of a smooth transition to the nose. Probably because of the waist joint they seem to have added. What I can't figure out though is why the lower legs look absolutely huge. I think it's partly because this version has practically no lower thigh section at all, but they just look weird. They work in battroid I guess, but it makes the knees appear much higher than they should be. Edit: Also.. someone please tell me there's a picture with strike packs that shows you can actually close the kneecaps with the legs dropped. That computer image with the packs probably has them sticking out just because someone forgot to pose them right in the model, but since they seem mounted at the lower edge, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they can't close with the knees bent. -
Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters May 17, 2013
Chronocidal replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Actually, I think technically the Worf episode was one of the few cases he might have truly gotten back to his own reality, just because they did all the quantum signature mumbo jumbo. But even then, the fact that he split off into a different reality caused a new reality in and of itself. The only "real" one would be the parallel where he never split off at all.- 1020 replies

They may very well bundle the more extensive Hasegawa markings as a decal sheet, but I'm fine with that really. The major markings there all look tampo printed. Probably can't expect them to make special releases of all the Hasegawa schemes, but I hope they do at least one classic F-14 style one. Even if they make all of these web-shop exclusives like the VF-4, I'd be happy to grab a bunch.
-
ARCADIA... I WILL BUY TEN MORE VF-1s IF YOU RELEASE THE REST OF THE HASEGAWA SCHEMES! I hope they're listening.... Is my text big enough to hear in Japan? Seriously though.. if this is some kind of Hasegawa/Arcadia collaboration, a little bit of me is jumping for joy. Now.. give my my freaking V.2 YF-19 Supernova releases.

Well crap then. Wonder how hard that would be to tweak. I don't know why they droop, but it looks so much nicer in the game.

Funny question, for anyone who has a set already. Are the wings set permanently into a drooped position, or can they be made level? I know the droop was shown in the take-off scene from the movie, but Macross 30 definitely had the packs mounted so the wings were level with the normal wing.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
My issue was only half with the huge ginormous gear not fitting in the bay.. the other half is that it's a fugly sausage of a gear that looks horrible, whether it would work or not. The thing is, you can make numerous in-universe excuses for why they're doing things so badly, or take the simple solution that Bandai just sucks at making aircraft, which they've shown on numerous other occasions. Either way, the result is freaking ugly, and looks incredibly lazy that they're making up things from scratch instead of going by the references everyone's been using for 30 years. Anyway, what I do wonder right now is whether the design actually has the knee joint for gerwalk posing. The display model looked like the legs were canted out slightly, but that magazine picture looked like a bad flashback to the v.1 VF-25. And now that I think about it, the VF-25 kits never had that joint either. That might be beyond what they can cram into the legs, but it makes me wonder how they got the display model legs canted out as far as they were. -
The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
Chronocidal replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That would take the people in charge of transformers caring that their jet modes look like crap. To be fair though, they're really not marketing to people who love aircraft so much as they're marketing to kids who'll go "Ooh look a jet that lights up and turns into a robot and shoots missiles!" Macross fans are spoiled because the valks were designed by someone with an aerospace degree.- 9336 replies

I'm not sure about who has the best prices, but NY has been a pretty solid source for ordering the packs directly for the other releases. They're not going to gouge anyone on those, since they're just putting together an order to send directly to Bandai, from what I understand. After the release, it's anyone's guess as to how high the prices will go.

If you ignore the second set of hands, this should do the trick. Edit: Ok, resized.. apparently it's more huge than I expected. I'm tempted to try and go restore that image so the hands are gone, but eh. It really just needs to be redrawn as a full picture.
