Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
Ease of construction for younger folks, maybe. My father loves building models, but I don't think he'd be able to even see half the parts that will be involved in this kit, much less assemble them. The nice thing about the VF-1 when compared to the VF-25 kits though is that 90% of the VF-1 is all the same color, and several of the major markings are in places that there really isn't much danger of scratching them off. Even if the entire thing is molded in color, you're still never going to have anything like the colors on the VF-25s. At most, you'll probably get exactly what the Yamato kits have (white, gray and black), none of which are going to be that hard to paint over. It looks like they've already separated out the black band on the nose as a part, and all the internal mechanisms will probably be a single color, so the only markings that anyone will probably need to paint/decal/sticker on are the stripes on the nose/wings/chest/legs, and the tails and ventral fins. Out of those, only the nose, wings, and tails are really at much risk of scratching, and those should be easy enough to protect. In the case of Hikaru's 1J, the wings, tails, and chest are really the only major markings anyway, and the chest is at no risk of scratching from anything, unless you pull off some crazy poses with the arms. -
You could probably rig up a very nice mount that way actually. If you made it a sort of adapter that you plug in underneath the packs, it'd really be sturdy.

So, have to say I'm pretty impressed that this thing went through. I was fully expecting the tiny little wing cannons to get rejected by Shapeways, but even those came through. In hindsight, I'd probably make the tails simpler, so I have some revisions to make, but I don't know if I'll order another myself. For now, I'm just happy to see that it came out really nicely. I don't even know what scale this thing is honestly. The game specs say the ship is over 100 feet long, and this is a bit under 7 inches, so it's a something like 1/180th This was about as big as I wanted to make it, or the cost would have shot up significantly.

See, while I'm glad I can detach myself from the anime and just enjoy the cool mecha-aircraft for what they are, it does mean I wind up buying more stuff. Oh well. I do wish we could get one of the alternate schemes from Macross 30 for this (that white one with the purple trim would actually be pretty awesome), but usually for me, odd colors aren't enough to turn me away from a design I like.

I guess how you divide up the work is up to you. For the model I ordered, I didn't bother with cutting any recessed panel lines into the model, partly because I just wanted a quick starter model to fiddle with and see what's possible, but also because I knew I could always scribe them myself. Will that be more work, and possibly wind up not being as good a quality? Yes, but it will also feel like I've put more work into the finished product when it's done. The ironic part though.. the model probably would have cost less if I cut the details out, because it's just material I didn't need to buy. So yes, doing the work at the model level is probably better in general, but it might be less enjoyable for some.

Actually, it's not just bent upward.. the wings are kind of a compound curve on mine. They kind of bend and twist in multiple directions from root to tip. Technically, it almost makes aerodynamic sense, because they kind of look like it was intentional, but Bandai still can't seem to figure out how to make plastic into flat shapes.

Yeah, through some miracle, I got through the click spam at AmiAmi on the Alto re-release, but I'm not counting on that working again. The only thing I think allowed that to happen was that I had basically memorized where to click the buttons to buy, and then turned all images off in my browser. It made the page refresh much faster than normal, so I was able to load it decently quickly during the heavy traffic right during the release. Just be careful, because it can be hard to find the right buttons to click to pick shipping and payment type and such.

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
Chronocidal replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Given the US audience for Macross Plus, I wouldn't be at all surprised if people set up screenings across the country at various conventions. You might even get some theaters on the west coast setting up limited screenings. Having the subs and dubs included in the official release will probably make that easier to setup.- 516 replies

Yeah, the head rotation is a royal pain. There really is no point at which the head is free of obstructions to rotate.

Heh, I tried to start a shapeways thread in here, but it died because I'm waiting for my model to arrive. Would it be better to setup a general 3D printing topic in the workshop/models area so it doesn't get so easily buried under the rest of everything? Have to admit though, that price is pretty tempting. I might have to invest in one of those myself, though I'd rather get something that can make parts a bit bigger, at least 8 inches or so. Being able to print in ABS is nice, though I wonder how strong it comes out. It's definitely a nice alternative to waiting weeks for Shapeways to get you a part, only to find out it doesn't work.

Oh. Well, one minor QC thing I just not noticed.. They gave me two right-side hinges for my front gear. Doesn't really have any effect except the piece looks crooked, because it's sloped the wrong direction, but the door still closes fine.

Exactly. I have absolutely no friction holding the legs into the proper position. Those swing bars slop around freely unless I press them inward.

Fairly certain, because I had the same trouble with the Alto. Once I put the hips in position, there is absolutely nothing to keep them from swinging back and forth around the metal pivot inside the nose. That entire section will only lock if you press the two hip mounts back inwards, but the gear doors are in the exact position to keep them from doing it. I don't know. Maybe there's a step missing from the instructions, but I've never been able to get the legs to stop flapping around by that metal swingbar. The one time I did do it, the landing gear doors snapped off and flew across the room. Fortunately they didn't break, but there physically was not enough room to lock the hip bars unless I removed those doors. Edit: Ok, technically, you can press them in some.. but what that does is make the doors bend all over the place. Basically, I've got two options. Don't press the bars in, and the legs swing freely by the hip bar pivot. Press the hips inward, and the gear doors start to get seriously stressed, because they've got pressure squeezing them inward behind the door hinge. They get pinned against the nosecone by the hip bars. Maybe I've just gotten two bum sets of hip bars, but mine absolutely refuse to lock unless I press them in. There's a slight detent I can feel, so I can tell when they get into position, but there's no friction to keep them there.

The hips in particular. The metal swing bars just flap in the breeze. They only lock if you press them inwards, but you can't do that unless you remove the gear doors entirely.

I've noticed the same kinds of scratches in various places on all my Bandai valks I think, never very severe, just little scuffs where it looks like someone goofed up and scratched the plastic. Picked mine up today, and have been debating whether to leave it in fighter mode forever. Still goes down in my book as the most needlessly overcomplicated transformation I've ever seen, and the legs still don't lock in any position at all. It's beautiful, but I can't understand why they make things so stupidly complex. Oh, and I STILL don't know how the hips can be so floppy out of the box, but still be nigh impossible to rotate for battroid position. The joint just seizes up entirely, and makes me think I'm going to snap the little swing bar in half trying to get the leg to swing down. On the plus side though, there are a few things definitely better on this one. The lower leg twist now functions easily, instead of freezing up and getting caught so you couldn't rotate the legs flat for fighter mode, and even though the wing hinge design is still idiotic, they at least beefed up the small pins the wings hook over, and the sliding tracks seem to have indents now at certain points to tighten up the rotation. Pilot is leaps and bounds ahead of the VF-25 ones too. Painting is much better.

Oh, the leg fins pull out as well, they're only held in by a thin ridge. That'll make the leg a bit easier to mask. I think one time I did take apart one of my VF-1's legs, but they are glued at certain points, so you have to find a careful way to pry them apart.

Not all of them did, but they released later kits that included all three types in 1/72. The early kits usually only came with one head, but came with enough markings to make a couple variants, like the J that came with markings for Hikaru, Max, or Miria. The 1/48 kits came in either the TV style A/J, or the DYRL style A/S. And if Arcadia is going to go the route of models, I will be absolutely thrilled. I want kits of all of them really, especially the VF-19s, and especially if we can get them molded in a couple different colors instead of that blinding white most of them are in.

Nah, same timeline, it's just like comparing the Hornet to the Superhornet, just in reverse.

Diagrams and reference drawings for a large scale VF-1 or VF-0
Chronocidal replied to Blazerwing's topic in The Workshop!
Getting a physical model to scale up is probably your best bet. With something in hand, you could cut your own cross-sections out of card-stock by hand, and scale them up to whatever size you need. -
Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
Chronocidal replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Yeesh, I stopped paying attention to this a while back when I saw that the movie version wouldn't have subtitles, and today I poke my nose in just to find out it does. How likely is it I can still get the box set? I don't remember how the sales of other sets have gone, but would places like AmiAmi still be selling them after the release date? Edit: Scratch that, was expecting them to run out of pre-orders... Bandai has made me paranoid. So this one is only coming in one set, not standard and limited editions?- 516 replies

Also, there's no reason to display this paint scheme in any mode other than fighter, because that's the only mode it looks any good in (relatively speaking ). If you showed in in battroid, the entire main logo would be on the back, and covered by the backpack. There are two separate ads showing that paint scheme. One is Hasegawa, the other is Arcadia. The Arcadia one is clearly a v2 VF-1 from every detail visible. It's a flat out copy of the v2 VF-1 lineart that gets included in the instruction manual, to show you where to put the stickers. Hasegawa would also have no reason to use Yamato line-art when they have their own kit diagrams, and doing so would probably be asking for a lawsuit. They're not that stupid.

I think the problem is that the entire torso is so difficult to actually put into the position it's supposed to be. Those back hinges just do not like to move at all. Once things line up, it's better, but yeah, there really is nothing supporting the head. The hips just outright suck though. That stupid swingbar mechanism looks like either they never intended for it to lock at all, or they forgot that the landing gear doors are where the bar needs to go. Either you remove the gear doors to lock the bars, or you let them flop in the breeze.

YF-19 by far, I think.. Fix the material problems with the VF-0, and it really doesn't have any issues compared with the 19. Even if it's an older design, they nailed it the first time around because the entire thing was computer generated to begin with. The YF-19 really looks pitiful next to the newer VF-19 mold, and doesn't hold up nearly as well.
-
Well then, guess I can deal with having an old and a new one of these. I've gotten enough VF-25s, I need something to balance them out. Probably stuck with NY's day-after markup rates, but with the Yamato releases tapering off, I've got less to save up for.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure a shapeways replacement is your only hope there, unless you want to ship the whole thing back to Japan for a replacement. For whatever reason, Bandai doesn't do replacement parts, or at least has refused to up to this point. Transformation-wise though, I'm not sure that part is necessary. Despite the fact that it's there to hold up the cockpit, it never actually does that anyway, so you may as well just wedge a piece of black plastic in there to fill the gap.
