Actually, right now? I can think of probably a million and a half ways that people of various political leanings would jump on it as a way to either promote or lampoon a viewpoint. I don't intend to dig into any actual viewpoints in terms of the real world, but think about it. The background for the story is that there's a war going on that not many people are aware of or actually care about, and they decide to lighten the load on society by offering military service as an alternative to prison. We all can do the math on that one. Personally, I hope they don't tweak the story to make it more "acceptible" to audiences, because I actually enjoyed the way it made me think. Changing it would pretty much ruin the entire background for half the characters in the original story, and entirely kill off one of the major themes in the book. Aside from that though, one thing I always appreciated about Yukikaze was it's more realistic view of what would happen if we really did get attacked by aliens. The people actually doing the fighting became much more connected across cultural boundaries, while the people back home lost interest, and never got past their old prejudices (in a very rough nutshell). It was the entire viewpoint of the author who wrote the fictional book in-universe: they weren't fighting for a country, they were fighting for Earth.

The obligatory romantic subplot in Yukikaze is between Rei and Yukikaze.

Yeah, the head on Ozma's YF-29 is kinda fugly honestly. Looks intimidating from some angles, but it's big and bulbous, and sticks up in fighter mode. Just gimme Isamu's, and I'll call it a day. Heck, even the plain dull gray standard scheme from Macross 30 would be better than all the crazy schemes they come up with. I'm really tired of the random stripes and colored panels all over everything. I don't even care about having the proper head, I just want colors that don't look ridiculous.

You may be right about that, but there's a more direct message to the story that only gets developed in the novels. The entire thing was one long exploration of mankind's relationship with the technology it develops, and the JAM were just utterly confused by the entire concept, because I believe they were meant to be more along the lines of biological machines. Heck, honestly, it almost like someone took the script for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and adapted it to work with fighter planes. Some really similar concepts, and in today's age, a story about man's relationship with his own technology in a war environment is painfully relevant. If they stick with the book version, the mystical aspects of the story disappear fast, and you're left with a nice commentary on the interactions of man and machine. Really.. I have to be honest here. I'm having a hard time seeing an actual down side to the idea of making a movie like this, Tom Cruise included. I don't see him having any trouble playing Rei nearly perfectly (age and nationality not withstanding). And really, yes, the whole debate over automated weapons systems couldn't be more relevant right now. The fun part though is the big-budget publicity this could generate for the series. I mean.. I'm not holding my breath for them to stick to the existing aircraft designs, but what if they do? You know the movie is going to be a special effects extravaganza, and you could probably wedge it into the PG-13 bracket without much trouble. I realize it's an unlikely best-case scenario at best, but I can't help but smile at the thought of walking down the aisle of a local Target, and seeing Yukikaze stuff sitting between the Avengers and Transformers merchandise. At the very least, it might convince some company to make some mass produced styrene kits of the planes. Before anyone says "that didn't work with (insert un-named movie about an AI aircraft here)," I'd say this is a different situation, since the designs already exist, and have been produced in limited amounts. The publicity push for a movie like this could open the flood gates on previously produced stuff that didn't get wide circulation.

It really is out of left field, sure, but I kind of wonder if the interest in the supposed sequel to Top Gun failed, and they just decided to try redirecting the momentum into a similar story.

You know... that could actually work. Maybe even better than Top Gun worked. Rei was kind of a jerk. Just have to change the name from Rei to Ray. The name Yukikaze came from Booker to begin with from what I remember, so coupled with that, and the fact that the aircraft carrier they visit wouldn't need to be in violation of all kinds of international treaties anymore, and it could fit pretty well. Rei never really had any attachment to his country anyway. Though.. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE base it on the books, and not that fustercluck of an anime. The amount of missing content made that series make less sense Tom Cruise does on a daily basis.

Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters May 17, 2013
Chronocidal replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Heh.. I love this comment. "In fact its not really a Star Trek movie poster if it doesnt have the USS Enterprise on it. Of the 10 prime universe Star Trek movie posters, only two didnt include a USS Enterprise somewhere on the poster. The Star Trek IV poster featured a Klingon Bird of Prey but only because Kirk and crew used the Klingon ship in the movie because the Enterprise had been destroyed in Star Trek III (and they didnt get a new Enterprise until the end of the movie). Nemesis was the only poster to not feature any ship at all and that film almost killed the franchise so apparently Paramount knows to put a ship on the poster." Say whatever you will about the reboot, or any other Trek film.. I don't think even ST:V was as bad as Nemesis. But anyway, I wouldn't be sad at all to see the JJ-Prise poof in this movie. I just hope when the inevitable new version comes along, it's something a little less iPrise, and more along the lines of the Connie refit. Actually, I'd love to see them finally use the original emergency saucer separation, where you can't reconnect the drive section without a spacedock. Really, the saucer is fine, looks like it came off the refit to begin with... it's everything from the neck down that looks weird.- 1020 replies

Assuming I've got the units right, the recesses should be about 2mm deep. I'll see what kind of things I could do for tabs, though I'm not too concerned about this staying together without glue, and I probably wouldn't paint it until it's glued anyway, if I paint it at all. I'm mostly just fiddling with the part thickness for the moment, and seeing how much material I can remove before it becomes unprintable. I might split the wing in half, and drill out the insides. It's not that thick, but if you can make those VF-171 missiles hollow, I might be overestimating the thickness I need.
-
Psh, you should be heading this thing as the local guru. You and Veef have been producing so much stuff from there, you look like old pros already. Major question right now is how carefully you have to tune parts to fit together. Like for the tails, right now, they're an exact fit for the slots they go into on the wing. If I send them off to be printed that way, I would assume they won't slide together easily, but would I be able to make them fit with a little sanding, or would I need to rework the model?
-
Hehe, yep. I've had a stash of old Wing Commander models collecting dust on backup drives for years. Found a Hornet from the first game as well, and think I have a few others sitting around. The blocky shapes of the WCIII ships make them really simple to model, so I figured this'd be a good starting project. Someone suggested making some Homeworld ships as well, so I might see what other models I can dig up. Depending on detail and size, they might be quick to do.

So we don't continue to derail the various specific project threads related to Shapeways, figured a catch-all thread for on-going discussion could be helpful. I know a lot of people are looking at Shapeways and thinking "ooh, I should try that," so a generic advice/tips thread should be helpful. We've had various tips and experiences scattered throughout individual project threads so far. If this would go better in the Models or Workshop section, anyone who has the power to do so, please feel free to make the move. I imagine Macross stuff will pop up here from time to time, but it won't be limited to that. So yeah, open discussion, teaser pics, questions, requests, anything relating to using the service itself. I'm just now learning how to set these up, so I'm expecting a lot of (possibly expensive) trial and error learning here. Decided to start with something I already had a model handy for, and just work on converting it to a kit-like format. So far, it's all built to exact fit, so I expect to either do a lot of sanding, or add tolerances into the parts. Some of you old-school computer simmers might reconignize this one. I'm setting this up for a decently large printing, and so far the parts shown there have uploaded, and haven't generated any kind of errors, so once I get the rest built I'll probably try a test printing. Wingspan is about 4 inches, so I'm expecting the length to be around 6-7 inches assembled. Cost so far is up to about $40 for what's shown, so I'll probably shrink it further for testing. I'm going to aim for 1/100 scale if it's practical, 1/144 if it gets too expensive.

Kurisama's 3rd Party Transformers Stuff
Chronocidal replied to Kurisama's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Homeworld is definitely a possibility, but yeah, let's not pull off the subject any further. Moving to a separate generic Shapeways development thread before I start discussing any details. I guess the question is, should this go in the fan works/models section (since it may deal with Macross, and fits with the general "workbench" thread), or should we keep it in the "other" section?- 26 replies

Kurisama's 3rd Party Transformers Stuff
Chronocidal replied to Kurisama's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
This is starting to get interesting, I started fiddling with a few converted game files on shapeways... don't want to derail this thread though. Do we have a general shapeways sharing thread for everyone to use? I've got a few models uploaded, and they seem like they'll work just fine, but I'd love to figure out how to reduce the price without having to shrink the thing I'm working on too much more.- 26 replies

Well, I resisted the urge to get two sets so I could have more missiles. Just can't justify that cost when I'm not getting a second 171CF. Would be nice to load them out with more reaction warheads, but after watching the actual movie, I was surprised. Thought they carried at least four.
-
I do have to ask the question though... when has Bandai ever cared about coloring things correctly?
-
Well actually, that's what I'm curious about now. The only thing necessary to use the missiles is to have those slots cut out of the lower half. If you were able to pry off the cover, it would probably be decently simple to cut the slots you need into the lower level of the wing. Provided you don't mind messing with one that is.

Or you know. Those wings couldn't be too hard to make from scratch. Might even stay on better. Or even just cutting the slots into the ones that came with the standard version. The wings have always been two layered, it's just they don't cut the hardpoint slots in the lower layer in the set that comes with the valk. I'm aware the idea or making replacement parts like that might step on Bandai's toes, but at the same time, I feel like all their shenanigans to keep people from using missiles unless they buy the entire set is a slap in the face. It's like DRM for toys.

I'd bet those could be Nos-Gers. Assuming you're on the first map still, try killing the Zentran/Meltran spawns that pop up in the north-east corner of the map, or maybe the ones that pop up in some of the caves, and see if the total goes up.
-
Awesome. Only thing I'd suggest is making the pylons a little taller/wider. They'll probably work that way, but don't know if the fins might collide with the wings (probably not since they'll stick out the back), and I think the pylons in the screenshots were a bit bigger. Also.. those might actually still work on Yamato hardpoints. I'm pretty sure some of the VF-171 missiles work on the VF-1s at least.

Yeah, fortunately missiles are actually kind fairly easy to make, lots of round parts and symmetry all over. I need to buy myself a caliper though, making those YF-19 update parts is gonna be tricky. I might see about making a few more varied types of stores though as a start. I kinda want to throw together an AMRAAM or JDAM rack for my VF-0s to use.

Sheesh, that was fast! I know you've probably mentioned it before, but what do you model those in?

Yeah, outside of the transparent portion, those should be really easy to make actually. Grr... one of these days, I need to start shapewaysing stuff. So much to do, so little plastic.

Sorry, all you said was Ozma had moving parts while Alto didn't. Got confused on that one. But yeah, Bandai really did cheap out on the 171 parts. No moving parts at all, except for the little wheels. Glad they're including the bigger missiles at least, but I wish the chest doors opened.
-
Not sure where you got the idea that the Alto armor packs don't have the same features as the Ozma ones. I think the're identical, except for the colors. I think I might pick up two sets of these though, just so I can slap the extra giant warheads on Alto's. Those things are massive.

Actually, the 30th YF-29 seems like it's even worse.. the entire upper half of the nose cone looks like it's white plastic painted black. Either that, or someone got white paint on the edge of mine.
