  1. Oh, by "plain nose" I mean the one with the sharkmouth and eyes. Love those vintage style aircraft markings, it's the character art I'd rather not have.
  2. They only ever seem to pull it off on things with F-15-like blocky bodies, if at all. Really, the original G1 Seekers weren't bad in that regard, because they kept the arms inside the fuselage, and had no actual limbs to fold out otherwise. They just need more blocky bodied aircraft.. I would probably kill for a good RA-5 Vigilante-style seeker. And I dunno why no one seems to want to do an XB-70 mold.
  3. I have to wonder if anyone would trade me a plain nose-art-less version for this new one if I got it.. still don't care for the character art at all, but would hate to ruin the thing trying to remove it.
  4. I stil think the dorkiest looking intakes were on the SV-51, since it didn't come with any covers to hide the tiny little compressor blades. I like the attention to detail with the included intakes, but I personally don't ever remove the intake covers on anything anyway. I hate having to track down extra pieces just to transform things correctly, so leaving the covers in saves a step there. I just think they look better than the shallow intakes. Ugh, I'm looking forward to this so much that I probably want to get two, but I realize my collection of valks is hitting critical mass. I might have to sell off some duplicates if I don't move into a house with some place to display/store them all.
  5. Actually, I hope they do make one, because it would save people a lot of work making that custom set in gray. Doubt they would make a set of packs just for a custom version that was never seen on screen, but it would be interesting if they actually made that combination super/armor/lance set.
  6. Hah, drat, guess I should have waited after all. Oh well, I'm running out of Frontier stuff I'm interested in anyway.
  7. Never had that issue with the models either. Talk about the right hand never letting the left hand know what it's doing.
  8. That's what doesn't make sense though... it's probably not cheaper. They'd potentially save a decent amount of money if they molded the parts in the right color from the start so they didn't need to keep repeatedly tampo printing the same parts to cover up the wrong colors. It probably just comes down to lack of foresight in the original molds, and not thinking ahead about which parts should be molded on separate sprues so they can be color matched (which is further complicated by the wacky paint schemes that change between every release). At least they finally got the lower wing gloves on a separate mold for Michael's, but Ozma's VF-25S had to suffer through the "we molded this in the wrong color, so we painted the entire thing" nonsense.
  9. Honestly, I only halfway blame Bandai for all the paint-related problems on these. Let's face it, the valks in frontier weren't really designed with any thought given to how they would ever be produced as toys, let alone why military-machines would be painted in such ludicrously complex and maintenance-heavy schemes. Still doesn't absolve them of their pants-on-head tendencies to mold things in the least efficient way possible to make them the correct colors, though. "So this part is orange with a white stripe across it right? Great! Let's mold it in white, dip the part in orange paint, and then paint a white stripe across it! Nothing could possibly go wrong on a transforming toy with tons of moving parts!" The little mis-colored panel on the Ozma YF-29 is the epitome of this really.. the plastic was the right color.. then they painted the entire piece black, instead of just the stripe.. then went back and repainted the part they shouldn't have covered up.. in the wrong shade entirely. Makes me miss the way every other series painted their valks: solid colors with a few stripes and panels.
  10. No, they should go back in time, and start whispering in the Bandai exec's ears while they sleep that all Macross releases should be web exclusives. And then post assurances here that despite our initial reaction, it will be better for everyone this way.
  11. Given the construction of that area, and how easy it is for those hip covers to catch on things, I would imagine it's very easy for those bits to crack. I've caught my hand against the covers several times while transforming.
  12. Good, I might still have a way to get one, since I passed on them before. Really wish I could get a version with just the sharkmouth markings though, the nose-art is probably my least favorite thing about it.
  13. My only experience with cancelling with NY was when I initially expected HLJ to not stock the VF-4, and placed an order for two with them. Come HLJ listing them, I asked to retract my order due to other more important expenses (which was actually pretty true, given the season).
  14. Any hint what color this one is molded in to start? I'm hoping white just for consistency, but I'm actually kind of tempted to mix and match pieces to make a TV 1S Hikaru with packs.
  15. Probably a fairly small run, since I wouldn't expect this release to appeal to any huge portion of the fanbase. It's basically a niche tribute scheme targeted at completionists, and aircraft otaku.
  16. Decided not to wait for HLJ to maybe get them, grabbed one off CDJapan. Shipping isn't too bad if you use registered SAL, but I decided I didn't feel like trusting "partial tracking." Went for EMS this time.. and it still came out to less then my last NY purchase.
  17. Also, Bandai has no sense of scale for pilot figures.
  18. Doubtful, but I bet if you removed the plugs they put in the normal tail slots, you could actually attach a standard set of VF-0A/S tails.
  19. Even if the molds are entirely new, there is no reason they wouldn't use the old CAD files as a starting point, so there is a very good chance a lot of the parts will be nearly identical, even if the fit and finish are updated to current standards. I think it's actually amusing how similar the backpack is, since they just left the tail mounts as they were, and plugged the slots the tails fit into.
  20. I do envy the SLA printers for their accuracy, unfortunately I just don't personally like the big liquid tank setup, or having to work in resin. Now, if they ever figure out a way to make an SLA capable of using ABS plastic, that would really be something... but I think the temperatures involved would make it very unlikely.
  21. Honestly, I have no real problem with that change.. maybe it'll reduce the idiocy that always comes with preorder scrambles by scalpers.
  22. I don't remember the droid arms being incredibly loose, but I think they did move around easier than some of my older ones. Control levers always did bug me though.. only way I used to be able to get them off was to pull the lever out, and pop the base loose with a screwdriver, or other thin metal thing. Getting some of the smaller elements apart has always been an art unto itself, especially with things like technics connector pins (half axle/half free spinning were the worst to pull out if the axle half was stuck). The pieces those lightsaber blades sit in have always been pretty tight, and somewhere along the way, I got paranoid about just "snapping" pieces into those clips, so I always try to slide things in from the side.
  23. With all the Japanese companies making large size 1/48 and 1/32 military kits, I have a hard time believing they'd have any trouble selling a 1/32 X-wing. It would only be 15.3 inches long, smaller than a 1/48 F-14, which everyone makes. Really though, I don't care if it's a Japanese manufacturer, AMT/Ertl, or whoever else, I just want to know why no one has ever made a decent 1/32 X-wing.. it's just depressing. And the pro-shop one sucks ass. It's bigger, but you have to either rebuild 90% of the parts, or start over from scratch. Scratchbuilding one would probably be easier than making that one not suck. It's actually part of the reason I bought a 3D printer.. I need one to remake all the screwed up parts on the kit I have.
  24. Oh, I know they're new toolings. What I mean is that they don't offer anything different. It's just another 1/48th x-wing, and it appears to be loaded with features I don't care about, but would have to pay for anyway. I want someone to actually produce a BIG kit. The ship isn't that huge; I have 1/48 aircraft that are bigger than a 1/32 x-wing would be.
  25. Really don't give a crap about a Bandai branded electronic X-wing. Probably be twice as much as the Fine Molds version, and I don't see any different details, save for maybe the dug-out torpedo trenches (which I can't remember if the Fine Molds kit did). Probably will also be pre-painted, same as they did for the electronic Star Trek kits they did a while back. For those, all the Aztec paneling was worthwhile.. for this? Nope. I really can't see how they plan to improve on anything already done. Make me a true 1/32 scale X-Wing, with part molds sourced from the original pieces used in the filming models (Saturn V sections, J-79 engines, and the like), and we'll talk.
