They're going to have to make a lot of improvements to get me to buy another set, I think. My originals are just fine as after I did some work to tighten the wing hinges. The lift fan is at least an interesting thing, but I put that at the same level as the airbrake on the 1/48th VF-1 on the "unnecessary detail" scale.

You know.. the literal only reason I would be even interested in the premium version is to have tampo'd boosters. I hate stickers, I've never used them on the fast packs, but not having the kites or skulls printed on the booster packs has always bugged me. It's definitely not worth the huge price difference just to get the boosters printed though. I know they wanted to let you use those packs on any valk, so it makes sense for the DYRL ones, but I think the TV packs should have come pre-printed to begin with.

I might be remembering wrong, but didn't launching a shuttle in TOS require evacuating the shuttle bay because they had no forcefield to hold the air in?

Holy cow, looking up the other Calibre Wings releases, I might have to get a few of these F-14s.. I've got a huge soft spot for VF-142 Ghostriders (the old 80s Monogram 1/48 kit markings), and they're releasing that scheme in November.. ugh. So much stuff to buy. I'm really tempted to go grab the Wolfpack version now, and park it on my desk at work. Right now the only decoration I've got is a smattering of Dilbert cartoons stuck to the walls.
-
Looking pretty nice, I'm tempted. One question, are the wing glove pylons and phoenix pylons on the belly removable? I've always preferred the slick look of a clean F-14.

I've heard bits about how to prevent yellowing paint, especially as it pertains to plastic models, and it usually involves mixing a very tiny amount of black paint into the white, or possibly some other shade. Apparently it's also used to prevent yellowing in housing paint for interior and exterior walls. This could also be why Bandai and Arcadia seem to love tinting their bright white plastic with some other shade. The internal degradation of the plastic is probably just going to happen over time, and heat and UV/light just happen to be accelerants. When I moved out after college, I dug through the box of my old G.I. Joes, and both my Crusader Shuttle and Hurricane had yellowed severely, with the bright blue of the Hurricane actually winding up a weird sort of sea-green. Oddly enough, the scout ship in the shuttle's bay is still pristine white, and I'm thinking the dark plastic of the shuttle's bay and black bay doors actually UV shielded it. Both vehicles were stored in a big cardboard box in the garage, and being in central California, they baked in the summer, so the heat is probably a factor, but the fact that the scout ship is still bright white makes me think the UV is a bigger problem, and storing things in dark plastic containers may be a nice way to shield them.

I don't think they thought anything through on the early DX VF-25s. I can't say those were aimed at collectors at all with a straight face, because so many sloppy decisions were made, and so many corners were cut. The fact that they're yellowing that badly is really no surprise given the overall quality of that line of toys. I don't think I've seen anything yellowing nearly that bad with the renewals.

Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
Chronocidal replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I did love the Honest Trailer summary about how ScarJo's previous roles all turned into a 20 trope pileup as the Major. Though I think that might be one of the weirdest bits.. just "Major", not "The Major"? It sounds so awkward. I did read an interesting point someone made about the changes to the plot though, and how the film kind of swapped out the questions about human identity for ones that are more about racial/cultural identity. While I can understand why someone wanted to focus on a slightly more current philosophical debate, I also think focusing on that sort of subject didn't do the film any favors. It went from being about high level existential philosophy to being more about current societal issues that were never the main focus of the original material.- 751 replies

Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
Chronocidal replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
So, just out of curiosity, is the live action movie similar enough in content and dialogue that you could recut the footage and build a full dub in both Japanese and English using audio clips of the original movies/series? Not that I think it would be anywhere near worth the effort, and would probably be pushing the limits of polishing a turd as an analogy. I just think it would be interesting to see if fans of the original material could make something worthwhile out of the footage.- 751 replies

Anyone still waiting on the Saturn V, it's back available on the Lego shop site, not even backordered status.

I guess I wasn't expecting the missiles to be that big a price bump, since they're just lumps of painted plastic, but there probably is a little articulation with them. The stand base would absolutely make the set worth it though.
-
Does it list what the entire package will contain? If it's with the base, I can understand the cost better, but that's still more than double what a single Regult was sold for.

New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
Chronocidal replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
Now all I can think of is going the route they went in the Wraith Squadron X-Wing novels, and the only ultimate (il)logical conclusion to this is if they wind up with one of Gubaba's race as an ace pilot. -
Your most recent Macross or toy purchase! General thread.
Chronocidal replied to Gakken85's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I've picked up a few of the Art Asylum ships over the years as well, but none of them can compare quality-wise, and while they're accurate enough, the construction and painting are pretty sloppy all around on most of them. Their best ones are probably the Excelsior, Ent-E, and the refit "All Good Things" Ent-D. The Bandai Refit 1701 is a beautiful kit, but it needs a bit of tweaking to get the lighting to look right. Mostly the bulbs are just too bright, and the deflector dish needs some kind of glazing or filter so it isn't completely transparent, and the wrong color. -
So, while I wouldn't expect them to actually change anything, I'm still slightly disappointed that there's never been a fix for the tail bend those packs cause. Have to recommend everyone protect their left tail with something, whether it's clear coating, future, scotch tape, whatever... those back antennas will wreck the paint on that tail unless something is done.

If these were released in Japan, I'm assuming their license there had to go through Big West.. could they get blacklisted for dealing with HG in the US?

Funny enough, a large percentage of them were caused by collisions with the USS Reliant's nacelles, even. (Though it was modded into the Bozeman at the time.) TNG got more usage out of the gimmick at least, but it tended to be one of those things that wound up seeming not all that useful in the long run.

Makes a lot of sense, and I was thinking I'd heard the saucer separation mentioned as an emergency measure at least once in TOS episodes, but the actual lines only talk about jettisoning the warp nacelles. Or was there a line in TMP about a potential separation?

Canonically, the Constitution class ships were able to do that as well, it just wasn't something you did every episode as a plot device, because it was more of a warp core ejection and evacuation mechanism than something you'd do for convenience. It also required a spacedock to reconnect them. Now, if you mean ones that can reconnect on their own, that may be something they're trying to do.

.... Yes. Because the thing I want to see out of my window is someone else's quarters? I'm not going to go touting Trek as some pinnacle of engineering practicality here, but there's a difference between something looking "cool but impractical" and... whatever that is.

Warning: Photobucket locks third party posting behind pay wall.
Chronocidal replied to Astralith's topic in Toys
They would be smart to state this and clarify the limits before their entire userbase evaporates in a fit of rage. I'm curious if I'd be able to link mine still, but their site is so bloated I don't use it anyway. I mostly just kept it as an archive for linking random things when I wanted. -

My first time hearing about this recently was when browsing an older forum that did not have local storage, and suddenly the community was practically rioting because a significant majority of images in the forums suddenly were replaced by Photobucket's hostage letter. -
Ugh.. while I can't really completely hate on the Idolmaster kits, the only reason I've appreciated them is because they've allowed me to pick up a ton of otherwise fairly expensive Hasegawa kits at literal bargain basement clearance prices. Like, we're talking cheaper than walking to my local hobby shop and picking up a Revell kit, even with shipping. I can't help thinking it's because no one really wants them that badly.. but they keep releasing them anyway? But please.. they need to stop the nonstop torrent of DLC content in these games. It's been nothing but overpriced add-ons ever since AC6 came out, and AC6 was only barely good enough to keep me from giving up on the series.

Chronocidal replied to Astralith's topic in Toys
The short answer? Spread the word that Photobucket has forsaken any chance it had of remaining relevant, and everyone needs to ditch their accounts as fast as possible, and either use some other form of storage, or just upload their photos directly to the forums. They now want people paying a yearly fee of $400 to allow linking of images on their account. I downloaded everything I had on there, and have deleted my account now. -
See, that's all I'm really interested in seeing. They made the Shinden II kit, and I nabbed a couple of those, but I could care less about Ace Combat repaints of kits I either already have, or don't have any interest in otherwise. Come on Hasegawa, give me my Falken, Morgan, and Nosferatu!!
