Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
sketchley replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
What is this based off of? Months in advance, CAD designs were published in modelling magazines. There were even pictures of the parts, printed and assembled, before the molds were created. So, again, it begs the question: have you guys assembled the kit properly? PS: by love: I mean adding glue, among other things. -
Wish I could've been there, too. Work... I think I would've tried to shake his hand or something. Maybe ask about lego or how he finds Kansai (I know, rather boring).

Psst: the VT-1 shouldn't count - as it's a two-seater trainer with a deliberately enlarged cockpit, not a single-seater front-line fighter.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
sketchley replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
I thought we already reached an agreement earlier in this discussion that: a) this is a model kit, not a toy b) this is a model kit aimed at a different market segment than the Hasegawa kits are aimed at. ... and to counter your argument: I don't have a Yamato, have no need for one, and have no intention of getting one. I have a few Hasegawa kits, and they've been gathering dust in the closet for close to a decade. I have this kit, and its almost complete (finishing up panel lines and stickers). I'm satisfied with this kit, and am looking forward to getting the Strike Packs and the Roy Fokker release. Personally, I think a lot of the frustrations that people are experiencing with this kit are due to not giving the kit the love it needs during construction, and not reading the instructions fully... -
ER/RM++ Project: Worldguide 02A: The Birdman: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRworldguide/MCRworldguide.php - a decent explanation of the supernatural abilities of the shrine maidens and the reason why they have them - and it ain't magic! ER/RM++ Project: Character 7 Citizen 02D Mylene Flare Jiinasu: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRcharacter/MCRcharacter.php#M7 - More fashion parade. Nevertheless, the insight on her thought process when first getting together with Gamlin is interesting. Complete! Gallery M: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross #27: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRgallery/MCRgallery.php#SDFM - while it's light on info, I'm left scratching my head how such an iconic, inspiring painting of the SDF-1 was NOT in the original edition.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann

I think it's been extended somewhat, and the slightly triangular shape of the cut nose is more like an oval. -
Now THAT would be interesting.

ER/RM++ Project: Glossary 08A: Gabigurago ~ Kim Kabirov: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRglossary/MCRglossary.php - most of the parts I did provided satisfying nuggets of info. Alas, the Environment Ship and Inspection Forces come up a bit lacking (IMHO).

COMPLETE! Mechanic: Other UN 04A: VF-14 Vampire: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#Other - finally this VF gets the full treatment that it deserves. Not only do we get the reason why it lost to the VF-11 in Project Nova, we also get a most sensible justification for the visual difference between its appearance in M7+ and M3.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
sketchley replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
I've only transformed it once to Battroid - and that was before I glued the legs - but I found the leg bar panel in the nose the least of the problems. I also found the instructions to be less than clear on what one is supposed to do. In short, the tab has to be oriented in the right direction so it slides into the right spot inside the nose, and the panel should lock closed over top. Again, the instructions are not exactly visually clear. Experiment with orientation and placement (but do not force it. If you think you have to force it, then it's not the right orientation/placement). As those panels are designed to only rest on the back torso in battroid, the only thing you could do is put some sort of tacky material that won't stain the plastic to keep them in place. Ie: the tacky Plasticine for putting posters on the wall. The wrists are another must-glue place. -
Picked mine up today. ¥2,000. Yes, that's two thousand yen. It surprised me, as I was expecting ¥2,500 (which it was marked at less than a month ago). If you're in Japan and are interested in picking up this kit, head over to Joshin. If memory serves the sale is on only for another few days. After that... My initial impressions of the kit at time of opening: - the armour factory is big. - although the pieces are molded in different colours, the Tomahawk and VF-1 are molded in the same colour - painting required.

Have you: a) properly transformed it (engaged the "lock" in the backpack joint)? b) added the adapter piece for the display stand? -
ER/RM++ Project: Episode sheets! http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php Episode: Ai 00A: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - Do You Remember Love? Episode: 7 16A: Macross 7 Eps. 16 "The Battlefield's Music Box" - did anyone else pick up on Gigiru's beam gun?

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
sketchley replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
It's actually quite enjoyable to build. I finally got around to gluing most of the externals of the legs, some of the nose seams and the back plate. It's a MAJOR improvement, as it gives the kit a feeling of solidity that was lacking. -
COMPLETE: Mechanic: 7 UN 10B: Macross 7 Fleet: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#M7 - lot's of surprising goodies on the ships. The Wolverine FILMS (X-Men Universe)
sketchley replied to antibiotictab's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It's part and parcel with getting old. Though, in terms of films, the defining change would be when Star Wars and Jaws were released. That was probably the greatest sea-change in Hollywood - when the producers geared their productions toward making "blockbusters". AKA: the end of New Hollywood. -

The specific point you're looking for is when CG became common. At that point, producers stopped having to think about how to implement the first ideas of the writers/directors and force them into coming up with something more innovative (and invariably better for the story) due to budget limitations. -
It's even worse with kids. "What's that?" "It's a Macross Valkyrie." (confused looks) "... it's a transformer." "oh, OK..."

ER/RM++ Project: History: F 04A: Galaxy Fleet Rescue Operation: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRhistory/MCRhistory.php#MF - somewhat satisfying, as it rounds out some of the details of the story beats in the series. Timeline 21A: The Discontent Zentraadi: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRtimeline/MCRtimeline.php - some minor changes between the two versions. Most interestingly, all of the dates have been bumped ahead by a month. The related matter is also a must read.

COMPLETE: Mechanic: F NUNS 02A VF-171 Nightmare Plus: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#MF - some major tweakage to the translation of the original, and all the new content from the expanded sheet. Most surprising is confirmation (finally) that the arm elbow beam guns are not on the VF-171.

Thanks Tochiro. You said what I was aiming for more succinctly and, well, better. There's one big problem with that: it endorses fan translators and their illegal distribution of the material. And that's one Pandora's box we'd rather keep closed.- 516 replies
