  1. Just checked the "usual websites" (as it was stated to be released today, I was planning a shopping trip tomorrow, and wanted to know what the cover would be), and the release date has been pushed back to the last third of November (all sites except Yamato, for some reason). This website: http://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/amiami/bok-3333.html even gives a specific date: November 26* *exact line is "planned sales date changed from 10.30 to 11.26"
  2. Why do an automated poll? Sure, it makes counting things easier, but as the options are waaaaaaaaaaay too limited. (As the Macross Cannon was let out of the bag, shouldn't things like the SDF-1, Battle class ships and so on be there?) Or another option is limiting the poll to VFs by era, or VFs, another one for VA, and so on.
  3. As the poll is unclear if it's in universe or out of universe innovation, I go the out of universe route, and pick the VB-6. For the simple reason that not only does it retain the classic shape of the Monster, but it also has a neat looking bomber mode. Runner up would be the VF-14, because it's simple such a radically different design then those that came before. (Hey! Why aren't the Vajra VFs in the poll?) In universe, it'd be the VF-24 Evolution (again, why isn't it on the list?) Hmmm, some random VFs not on the list: VF-0D VF-3000 VF-3000B VF-5 VF-11 MAXL And the VF-17/YF-19/YF-21 should be separate from the VF-171/VF-19/VF-22, as they are quite different (YF-21 and VF-22 are arguably the most similar of the lot, but they are still quite different designs with different technology.)
  4. Re: S02E05 Hmmm... I think this is the first episode of the series that had me chuckling on a number of occasions. It also had (and still has) me scratching my head over what happened. In the end, I think this is an episode that highlights what Eugimon pointed out earlier: is it episodic or character driven? This episode is definitely the former. Nevertheless, it was great to see the cast cleaned up and normal looking. Especially Lou Diamond Philips. Funniest part of the episode? The extended focusing on the MGM logo in the movie theatre. Surreal comedy. Now the main question on my mind is: was the episode filmed in Cloverdale in Surrey? It sure looked that way, especially with the one shot down the main street with what looked like Grouse Mountain in the background.
  5. maybe during his break from Ecole du Ciel, he's managed to complete ALL of Macross the first. (It's been what? A 2 year hiatus?) Or maybe he's doing even months Macross, odd months Gundam...?
  6. I should clarify my original post: the poll I'm basing my logic on is the one that appeared in the most recent Macross Ace; not any that appeared herein MW.
  7. I don't know... if the polls are anything to go by, I'd expect a VF-25 book fairly soon. Of course, there's an almost equal chance that it'll be a VB-6 themed book; or another VF-1. Nevertheless, the good news is that the pace of these publications is steadily increasing.
  8. Not just missiles, but also bombs (something indicated as being present on the VF-1, but not on later craft). Nevertheless, focusing just on missiles: they're not redundant. We see large, long range reaction warhead missiles used in both Macross 7 & F. Anyhow, when I say tactical, I mean the bunker buster type with minimal collateral damage (if the aim is right). For example, a stealth cruise missile. The book that this topic is about has provided some much needed insight into non-micro missile, non-super/FAST pack missiles, but the rest of the VFs are lacking (notable exceptions being the VF-1, VF-4 and VF-171).
  9. FYI, the majority of cities like Tokyo and Seoul are composed of narrow, winding streets. Even granting that that one area of Manhattan is difficult to navigate off of the main streets, sooner or later one is going to cross one of the NS or EW streets and find their way. The same cannot be said for cities like Tokyo and Seoul.
  10. LOL ... and doesn't try to usurp your settings, either!
  11. Agreed. The only other places that are comparable are the ones that have medieval street layouts. The first that comes to mind is London. That said, one must keep in mind that in Japan*, only the most major of major streets have a name (oft just a number, as in Route 1). So, even a place with a medieval street layout with named streets (ie London) is infinitely more navigable. Probably the only place comparable is Seoul. Hopefully this will also explain why maps, stylized or not, are so prevalent in advertisements in Japanese magazines (aka directions from the nearest major landmark/train or subway station/bus stop). *there are always exceptions to generalizations. One of them is Kyoto, which has a North-South, East-West grid layout.
  12. Correct, that' why it won. (The other way to look at it is that it's art imitating life. Correction: special forces stealth fighter. Time and again, the various Macross series have focused on up-close dog-fighting and neglected beyond-visual range encounters or the usage of tactical ordinance (some of it is implied, but it's rare to see it animated). Which is the greatest weak point of Macross, IMHO (despite the realism, it has a very romanticized portrayal of air-to-air (space-to-space?) combat.)
  13. Nods. I can understand him. If he gets tired with the material or doesn't have the motivation to "drag out" the love triangle, I agree that it shouldn't be continued. Of course, there's always the possibility of doing what Yoshikazu Yasuhiko is doing with "MS Gundam: The Origin"; that is, going back and embellishing the back story and the less-than main characters.
  14. Nah, it depends on the amount of manga created. MtF #1: 196 pages, 2009.11.10; content from Macross Ace Vol. 001, 002 MtF #2: 196 pages, 2010.09.25; content from Macross Ace Vol. 003, 004, 005 Given that Macross Ace is currently being publishing approximately 4 times a year, I expect MtF #3 to be released within 6 months of this post (or 1.3 per year). Now, given that Macross Ace has already increased from 3 per year to 4, I won't be surprised if it increases to 5 or 6 per year; which would increasee the release rate of MtF to 2+ per year.
  15. Nah, I like the pace of the first few episodes, especially when I view the series as a girl being introduced into a rock band, and the rock band rising to popularity.
  16. This is interesting. It reminds me of the general Japanese anime fan reaction to the ending of Evangelion (ranging from dislike to the extreme of sending death threats to the director) compared to the Japanese non-anime fan reaction of generally liking the ending. Is the message lost on us "purists"?
  17. Me, neither. Seen some art for it. Not my cup of tea.
  18. Not just Young, Rush, too. I really like how they're playing on Rush's suspicion (paranoia) and Young's actions reinforcing those suspicions. Agreed. Great stuff. An episode that makes me want to fast forward to next week. Understandable. Though I disagree with the tolerable part, I fully agree with the hope that Eli will experience much growth and maturity. Getting his mom and Camile's girlfriend to form a "stones communicator anonymous" is a large step in that direction. One that I didn't see coming (when the gf walked in, I thought it was for some sabotage on Camile.) Anyhow, I'm looking forward for the melt down, especially with the revelation of how far gone Rush is. (Writing on the walls? Not sleeping? Is he also infected by the alien DNA?)
  19. Wow. It also begs the question: why hasn't anyone else noticed and investigated the alien? Though in momentarily pondering it, I thought that the pet isn't unusual and nobody notices asSouth Ataria Island is infested with them
  20. Hmmm... given the lack of posting (myself included), I think we're all in agreement that this past episode (S02E03) was good. Personally, I liked it quite a bit. Lot's of juicy, interesting stuff to ponder (both the Ancients past actions, and the present (and future!) actions of the crew.) I think the only complaint I have is that the music is not as "visible" as it was earlier in the series.
  21. Welcome to Japan! It's making me think that we won't be having a trip to the surface of Mars, a la SDFM. What happened in that episode? Picked up resources (Destroids mining asteroid, check), SDF-1 captured by a gravity field to prevent it's escape (captured, check), Kamujin mounts a surprise attack (check). I think we'll get the Misa former love interest covered in flashback. Of course, Hikaru has to rescue her... hmmm...
  22. I think this sums things up perfectly. Which begs the question: why'd they try and fix what wasn't broken? SG-1 ran for 10 seasons. Think about that for a moment. Wherein does it suggest that the style of the show was unsuccessful? Compare that to (new) BSG: 4 seasons. Even SGA had a longer run! (Now, before you say that BSG was more popular/in the mass media/caused changes in entertainment, keep in mind my point: it's not about BSG per se, but that SG1/SGA had a successful formula that produced 15 seasons of episodes.)
  23. Because it's a luck charm that protects him from things like bad luck and evil spirits?
  24. Arrgh! They killed off my favourite background dude! Man... don't the producers realize that killing off characters is not a way to increase a show's popularity? Just look at what happened to Dr. Carson Beckett in SGA, fans liked him so much, he was brought back! Grrr. Aside from that, S02E02 was good. It's what S02E01 should've been. They finally gave a decent view of the shuttle. Of course, they've effectively removed it from the series as well. >.< Next episode looks promising. That said, just like I predicted with S02E01, there'd be no follow up of the ending. Will the same hold true? From what I understand, it'd be the latter. As the series is reportedly a "big budget" series. (I don't have exact numbers, but I remember reading somewhere that each episode costs double that of SG1; which was a series made on the cheap.
