  1. I recently watched that movie. Fundamentally, it's a Trek movie with a decent plot. And watching Christopher "Doc Brown" Lloyd's scenery chewing is a treat. That said, I kept being pulled out of the movie by the dialogue. The captain of the science ship? Sounds like a retard. Starfleet security referring to Bones as "in the funny farm"? Terrible. Truly terrible writing. Ah well... the director makes up for it with the yes-no conversation in ST IV.
  2. Heh... that reminded me of something I was thinking about the other day with the SDF-1 and Macross productions: SDF-1 appears: generally liked by us foreign fans (SDFM, DYRL, FB2012, M+, MF) SDF-1 doesn't appear: generally disliked by us foreign fans (M0, M7) Macross II is the odd one out - as despite having the SDF-1 appear, it gets destroyed! Therefore, the dislike is stronger than the like. The SDF-1 is like a dog in a movie. You need it to be successful. But don't KILL the dog!
  3. Who said anything about going to those extremes? Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
  4. Nah... English speakers who don't know their cultural origins find it hard to grasp. Theatre in the Shakespearean era? No female actors. Men had to play female roles.
  5. In about a month: http://www.kadokawa.co.jp/na/ (middle pane, purple text)
  6. The most obvious break would be pre and post destruction of Neo-Tokyo. In the first half, you've got the mystery "what is Akira?" The second half is "how do we stop Tetsuo and get the situation back under control?"
  7. Try: http://macross.anime.net/wiki/Category:Chronology One I've been working on over the past few years (in some ways more simple than the Compendiums, in some ways more complicated): http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/Timeline.htm [Note: "Official Setting information is in darkgreen. Extended Universe information is in steelblue."]
  8. ... and why would you jump to either of those conclusions? PS: it's Anti-Unification Alliance.
  9. Sketchley. (Before you blow it off as nit-picking about spelling, trust me it's not. About a year ago, someone got their panties in a serious knot because there was another person posting in the same thread with a similar name and that someone thought we were the same to people. They then had a big blow-up against me, because that someone didn't like either of our opinions - despite the opinions and the language used to post them being quite different. I don't want a sequel to that, thank you.) The artwork is... hmm... sufficient. The weakest part is the character design (which is hit and miss), and the strongest is the mechanical art (this episode opens with some really awesome looking VF-11's and YF-19 & YF-21 action). Panel layout is dynamic. I'll have to get back to you on the story (as I haven't been able to read it yet). However, I found the preceding chapter (in NA #2) a good read, with a solid pacing and a few new things and changes from the OVA & movie versions.
  10. One of these days, someone is going to have to photoshop this image and remove the funky background and black TV screen boxes... ... cuz that's what the description on the website says...?
  11. Thank you!
  12. ... and people in the 80's and 90's said there's a dirth of creativity and all the bands sound like those from the 60's and 70's. It's called getting old. Here's something that'll sum it up for you:
  13. I like SC4 the best - probably 'cuz of all the micro-managing one can do in it (which is probably a turnoff for some). Nevertheless, one of the best features of SC4 is region play. Which would be ideal for soul.assassin's map; cuz all the factories and most of the support systems (power plants, garbage disposal, etc.) are in a neighbouring city, granting a better representation of Island 1, with it's factory and support systems hidden away in levels underneath the top city layer or in the underbelly of the Environment Ships that accompany it.
  14. Khan~~~~~~~! Anyone else get that vibe from his post?
  15. Interesting... but you need it more urbanized. More tall buildings in your commercial and residential zones. Not sure how you'll work around not having pollution spewing factory zones, but never mind. The elevated highways also don't work for me... mind you, w/ stage 4 and 5 buildings on your C & R zones, they should blend in better.
  16. Macross 7 Valkyrie's are da' bomb. For one reason alone: economy of line. No VFs before or since are as eligently depicted. Sure, some may have more bells and whistles or be more or less appealing, but they're ALL more complicated. But if you ask me, DYRL and Macross II are movies within the Macross universe. Fictional movies. Whereas SDFM, M7, M0, MF et al are fictional productions based on real events in the Macross universe.
  17. 2011 Vol. 03 contents roundup: Macross Content: Macross Ace +: New column: "Playback in divas". Features M+'s Mao Nome. 6 full colour pgs. Hybrid Pack: 1 & 3/4 pages. Bottom features game-original YF-29 variations: Ozuma's craft, Low-Visibility Specification, Isamu's craft, & Isamu's craft with Super Pack equipment. [is it just me, or do these 3 variants look better than Aruto's version?) 1/4 pg: "Yokko Kanno Produces Macross F Super Dimensional Super Live Cosmic Nyan" DVD & BR release. 1 pg Macross the First manga colour ad. Macross the First: gorgeous painting of Misa reclining. I think Gubaba's already covered the big revelations elsewhere. So, I'll just add that the first few pages are of the last few that were printed in the last edition of Macross Ace - which makes me want to go back and double check if NA #2's chapter had different or rearranged pages & panels. As always, the artwork is great, but the character artwork is truly outstanding this time. 1 pg Macrss 7 Trash B&W ad 1 pg B&W ad for the more recent Kadokawa Comics A Macross manga collections. Macross Plus TAC Name #06: story takes us up to Isamu & Guld folding to Earth. Now... there are some differences that I've been noticing. In #5, it's directly stated that Millard has been amputated due to a flying accident. I don't recall that every being mentioned in the anime (though, that might just have been the English dub). We also got to see the YF-19 and YF-21 blowing up a Phalanx real good. This issue, just glancing at it, it looks like Isamu and Guld consumating their relationships with their girlfriends (Sally and Myung) isn't pictured, and the fight in front of the hospital where Isamu accidently punches Myung is covered in flashback. (this isn't a big change, IMHO, as it maintains the high pace of the plot.) ... and NA #4's preview: - anime, goods & 30th anniversary information (looking forward to this last one) - Macross the First: completion of the Mars chapter - Macross Plus: TAC Name Non-Macross Content (focusing on the manga I'm reading in the previous issues, et al, it's too much to report!) Masamune Shirow poster: finally one that is reminiscent of his manga works and paintings in the Intron Depot series. Focus is a tank, but we get a radome aircraft and a pair of ?Landmates? in the background. There's also a LOT more Gundam featured in the news & anime full colour sections. I sense a trend... Un-go: not sure where this is going, but my interest is waffling. Pace drags at time. Full Metal Panic! Another: interesting and continuing to get more interesting. I want to say to some of the other manga-ka who started in NA #1: THIS is how you introduce characters and pace a story! (Though the artwork in the last few pages of this issue looks rushed...) Legend of Tomino: fun and interesting. I don't know what's better - the over-the-top stereotyping of late '70's/'80's anime industry stuff, or if this story is fundamentally true with only a bit of embellishment here and there... wish I knew more about Tomino's true story to compare. Nevertheless, fascinating on a couple of levels. Last Exile: still not digging the pre-teen's w/ boobs look, but it's nice that we get introduced to some supporting characters who actually look like adults. Story is quite interesting and well paced. Looking forward to reading this one. Blood C: another well written and paced story that I'm looking forward to. This one appears to be the first part of a two-parter (or longer). Alas, doesn't look like they have anything on the rival paranormal investigators introduced in NA #2. Masamune Shirow Works [column]: topic: Dominion. Ah, brings back memories. Alas, doesn't look like anything new. Asura's Wrath: story is starting to get predictable... and not interesting. Nevertheless, kudos to it as it's got the longest mid-story fast-forward ever w/ the same characters - 100 years! Anyhow, the technology/city of the gods is the most interesting - as it reminds me a lot of a manga concept I was working on about 10~15 years ago. Borderline: just as the characters were getting interesting, it's totally changed gears. This is, I'd like to describe as, a clip show. Though, it's not. It's simply background exposition, from beginning to end. Nice artwork, but I'm disappointed as it's ruined the flow of the narrative established in NA #1 & 2, and has put a decidedly deadly realistic spin on what was otherwise a kinda serious but still silly story (idols in robot suits at the border). Spy MKT: man oh man, this one is a highlight! From the awesomer than awesome James Bond spoof, to the pseudo James Bondian pick-up lines English lessons on the bottom of every second page. Here's my favourites from NA #1: "not only gun has a big load" "Cigar? Is it really a cigar you suck?" "Gun? I already dropped my gun, you know. If you say I still have one, why don't you look for it by yourself?" ... wish the next James Bond movie had lines like that. Not sure if Daniel Craig could say them with a straight face, mind you.
  18. You are in correct that the YF-24 didn't. However, the VF-24 is based on the YF-24 Evolution; a fighter which introduced such technologies as ISC. A lesser form of ISC (among other things), was disseminated to the emigrant fleets. Which prompted the development of such things as EX-Gear and Cyber-grunt pilots to compensate for the reduced ISC performance. It's unclear if the end result of the ISC + EX-Gear/Cyber-grunt conversion is better than the VF-24 or not, as the VF-24 has only been mentioned in passing... ... and they do kinda mention why the VF-171 is cheaper to operate. Off the top of my head are: easier to train pilots for it, ease of maintenance (less highly tuned, high performance machinery within it), no fold quartz (a non-factor when compared to such VFs as the VF-19. But the main factor why the YF-29 was never produced in great numbers. Therefore a factor in it's relative cheapness when compared to ISC equipped VFs).
  19. Nah. That was due to the legal issues regarding the rights to SPECTRE stemming from the development of "Thunderball" - which ultimately resulted in "Never Say Never Again".
