JMS is a serious fan of the original movie though and has said that this is not a remake, but that it takes place in the same universe and will pay homage to the original. Even so he was reluctant to take on the project and really only did so to make sure that it was done right and did not tarnish the original, which is still a SF masterpiece.

Whether people like it or not, aircraft carriers are a symbol of the United States' power, not just militarily, but industrial, technological, and humanitarian. Whenever a world crisis crops up a US aircraft carrier can be there within days, and usually not a single shot is fired, even when tsunamis wipe out island communities a carrier can be there to lend air and support, providing much need food, water, electricty and medical services and supplies. As for the naming of carriers, the the big bush will of course have name recognition issues as people will likely wonder which Bush it is named after, even adding the HW really won't help much. As for the next carrier, the Ford, that name really makes no sense whatsoever. Ford was not a well known president and is generally looked upon my history as hacing little or no impact. The carrier should have had a legacy name, maybe not Enterprise, maybe let that name rest for a period as it has done before, but at least the America, or possibly Lexington or some other major carrier whose name now lays fallow. Of the carrier currently in service the only name I could possibly call into question would be the Stennis, that one was not the best name to give that ship, and everyone knows it. Now, could the name of the Ford get changed, yes, the ship has yet to be commissioned, and more contracts will simply have the hull number assigned to it, not the name, so changing it could be an easy thing for the next regime to push through, just so long as they don't name it something crazy like the Clinton.

The computer and electronics super geek thread

It will come with me to work from time to time, but primarily it will be at home, and will be used in the living room since I never have time to work on the desktop in the office. I am thinking probably a 17" wide screen or better screen since that is what my old laptop has IIRC. -
It's named after Bush senior, not the current president, it is illegal to name a carrier after a standing president. THe one that is really upsetting people is the next carrier, the Carter, or is it Ford, since it was to be the next Big-E.

Well now that the dekstop is dead I figure I will just pull the two hard drives and put them in enclosures to use as externals, but now that I will get a laptop as a replacement (should be getting a fat return this year), what laptops do people recommend? My biggest requirement is video card power, I want either a Quadro card, Geforce 7900, 7950, or 8800 card on it, since I can softmod those into Quadros for doing my cad work. -
Well remember any "interesting" propulsion system is also a weapon of mass destruction, so weaponizing the engines would not be unheard of.

Tried that, and according to the HP website and everything i have done, I've toasted the power supply -
they look nice but with such a white background it washes them out, choose a more neutral khaki background next time if you can

I have never been turned on by a valk girl before, but that stirs me

For 300 bucks they better transform themselves and kill on command

OK I have a slight problem, I've had my desktop unhook for the last couple of weeks and out in the garage, since we were out of town and then busy and didn't want it getting stolen if we got broken into. Anyway last night I went to hook it up, everything goes back in fine, but I notice that when I plug in the power cord a green light on the back of the power supply starts slowly blinking. I've never seen that before, but figure it's nothing so hit the power button and, nothing happens. Annoyed I check my connections and hit it again, and again nothing. I go to the HP website (it an old Pavillion I got on sale) and run through the first step of their troubleshooting, unhook everything and then hold the power button for 5 seconds, then plug back in and try again, and sure enough, nothing happens. There was more but my wife needed help with the baby so I couldn't get to it. My question now is what the heck do I do? I will go through the rest of the troubleshooting, but did having it out in the garage somehow burn out its power supply? And if so am I better off just pulling the hard drives and putting them in enclosures as externals until I can get a newer laptop in a few months? -

Oh God I remember that steaming pile, ugh it was horrible, and what was with the freaking drink interlude in the middle? -
I don't think we ever said to get rid of the Omni-Striker, just scale it back, maybe make it a single/emergency use only item, otherwise, yes it does make it a God mode vehicle.

Nukes might expensive but valks would be even more so. Try this for an example, an F-22 costs around $339 million, whereas a tactical nuke costs something around $10 million. So, for the risk cost of a single F-22 going in and deploying its super energy weapon you could have instead launched about 34 tactical nukes, do all of them get through, probably not, but at least one would, if not more and would probably do equivalent damage. If anything I see that Omni-Striker being more a weapon of last resort, a one shot that burns itself out after use. Think about it, you're alone, the last of your squad and surrounded by hostiles you have no chance of getting out to initiate your emergency one time use fold drive because it will put you on too straight a course for too long. So you lure in the enemy and fire off the omni-striker after which it is dead and you beat feet to escape.

Dr Bindy on Joecustoms already read the law, and he is a lawyer, and is convinced that this is nothing to worry about. Basically it really only applies to toys manufactured during the recall scares last year. At the very worst it will hit some resell retailers, and anything labelled an adult collectible or for ages 13+ won't be affected either.

Ain't no stealth in space, you produce heat, so you aren't stealthy no matter what radar waves you cancel, sorry. You can limit energy output but never be completely stealthy. As for this Death Blossom, er Omni-Striker system, it is an interesting concept but would still have limitations. Such a massive energy output would either leave the ship dead in space for a short period, as all energy was just dumped rather violently, or would at least have a serious recharge time for its capacitors to recharge. Heck even when OZma protected the bridge of the quarter he took a few seconds to start moving again, yes he had his monologue to give, but the amount of energy he probably dumped into his barrier was probably playing merry hell on his other systems, who knows how many breakers he was probably resetting with his toes while talking there.

EWhat is this about, is it any good? -
Saying that those look alike is a huge stretch, the configuration is similar but then so is the configuration of an SR-71. Honestly, I think it is just a light high speed non-variable courier ship, nothing more, a throw away design.

Terminator Salvation, colon, Really Long Movie Title
Knight26 replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The new trailer definitely has me looking forward to the movie, smart move having the resistance use UH-1s and A-10s, as they would be one of the few airframes capable of flying after the nuclear devastation. One other thing to consider, I can't get the idea out of my head after seeing John talk to the Terminator, that he wasn't just boasting, but that he was briefing the terminator, that he developed the time travel device, and lied about it, then sent the terminators back in order to fulfill prophecy. -
