  1. Thanks! It's brush painted (after sanding all the details off of it; I'll have to add the life boats and transporter emitters back later). The Bussard Ramscoops on the end were just red sharpie marker that was squeezed into some Rustoleum crystal clear finish and brushed on the insides. As for rents here: they're trending about $1500 for a one-bedroom. O.O
  2. Unfortunately, no. Hobby shops and clubs both have been drying up where I live. Thankfully, the sanding was largely done before my hands gave out on me, so that's not an issue.
  3. Thanks Thom! It was just pretty sobering when your physician tells you that; talk about a fast ball out of left field! But the way she stated it, I was risking my health even thinking about trying anything with that pattern. Another issue that bugs me is the money one; whenever we have any to spare, something comes right along and swallows it up (and I'm sure other folks end up with this as well).
  4. UPDATE: hands finally healed enough to continue on the ship: Got the stand (mostly) painted up; decided to make the base look as much like a combadge as possible: The bad news: the doctor told me that I had basically "overused my hands" and had a repetitive stress injury that exacerbated the arthritis in them. I had brought along the instruction sheet for the model kit and showed him why and what ended up causing this; she was very frank with me: "Robert... if you try cutting, taping or even trying to draw that pattern, you're going to be in rigid braces for the next six months. That makes MY hands hurt looking at it, and I don't even build models! Let me level with you: you WILL do permanent injury to your fingers and wrists if you attempt that kind of thing. I know you like your hobbies, but that is just simply unsafe for you. If you have another way of doing it, I strongly recommend you use it. Otherwise, I am NOT going to treat you again if I find you back here and you attempted this." So my choices: 1) find a way to afford aztec decals (good luck with that; our rent goes up next month and the car is due for emissions); 2) leave the ship as is. Basically, the model is finished; it cannot go any further without the aztec decals. I will simply put this up on a shelf as is, no decals whatsoever; I dislike the look of the registry against a plain hull (just doesn't look right). I would have liked to have completed it, but that's no longer in my power. I'm going to have to stick to smaller projects for the foreseeable future and consider this indefinitely unfinished. (I'd really like to know why rents are so damned expensive! Seriously? ) Thanks for watching... hopefully I can continue the armor project I have on the side.
  5. After you win the lottery, right? *starts looking in change jar for a dollar to get a ticket*
  6. Agreed on all counts; just like you wouldn't go out into the woods or to climb a mountain unprepared, you don't go into space unprepared either. Now to the immediate topic proper: There is a big difference between being prepared for a fight and going out to pick one. In the case of SDFM, Hikaru originally was a pacifist, but ended up joining UN SPACY; while the series didn't go too much into detail about this (IIRC), I suspect it's because even he knew that when aliens are trying to kill you, laying down with a blindfold is a really bad idea. In M7, Nekki Basara is also a pacifist, but when absolutely necessary, he can fight (he's shown in a short fist fight in one episode, and uses missiles Ray loaded onto his VF-19 Kai in another). Pacifism isn't just one singular default mode: there's differing levels with people, organizations and such. IRL: I prefer to avoid situations and walk away from trouble, but I do know how to use my keys as an improvised melee weapon if needed, and I will fight to defend myself and my family should it become necessary. For someone to say "oh, you're not a pacifist, pacifists don't fight" would be inappropriate, as my preferred method of existence is avoiding conflict when and where possible. So with that said: pacifism isn't "stupid" as another poster asked about, and seeing such as "stupid" I would not consider a "western" anything. What I do consider stupid is the interstellar equivalent of walking right up to a grizzly bear and saying "excuse me, I'm a nice person: could you please not eat me"? That's what going out into space without any defenses will do to you. I also consider it really dumb to not stand up for yourself when others seek to take advantage of you: human nature will always tug on people to do that, no matter how noble they may try to be. And you're always going to have those who will heed to their own self interests rather than the "common good". What that requires to resolve is a deterrent; a means of enforcing consequences should someone seek to cause harm. It does NOT mean you must be the aggressor, but it does mean that in order to keep someone else from becoming said aggressor, you need a means of demonstrating the reasons why it would NOT be in their best interests to do so. Just because you're armed doesn't mean you MUST USE IT. I know not everyone may see it this way, but that's my stance on this. I'm a pacifist and refrain from fighting unless I absolutely must; I do not seek conflict, but I am ready should someone seek to cause deprivation or harm to me or my loved ones. And in the Macross 29 Fleet's case, financial harm is being done by those who are using their refusal to defend themselves against them. As the ancient saying goes: Si vis pacem, para bellum. "If you want peace, prepare for war."
  7. And the death of traditional art. My current level of depression just hit a new all-time low.
  8. Singer Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian 'rare talent,' dies at 84 From FoxNews: (More): https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/singer-gordon-lightfoot-canadian-rare-talent-dies-84
  9. It does to some degree; I checked on my VF-1 w/ wing load (box launcher and RMS-1)
  10. Those are the kind you should not marry; if your "wife" ever demands such a thing, you may want to rethink your marriage. At the very least inform her: "No, and if you touch any of them, you'll be needing a lawyer very shortly." 😠
  11. Er... I think the idea is NOT to have the reaction weapons that close to the body of the fighter when they launch... That's just me though; Seto Kaiba would probably have a more concise answer that corrects my assumptions.
  12. One thing I've found: if you're moving a model with a fragile component (like the deflector spike on the TOS Enterprise), get a plastic cap or tube from packaging (like a spray can or something ) and put it over the fragile part (make sure there's enough room where it's not touching!), then use low-tack tape or rubber bands to hold it in place.
  13. Right; I went through that on the 1/650 TOS classic kit. The nacelles alone have a slight taper which I tried to replicate by subtly sanding the nacelle down as it got to the back. Also on that kit: the pylons are mounted in the wrong position and I had to cut them off, make new pylons and mount them in the correct positions.
  14. Looking good so far, derex!! BTW: on the TOS-E: when I did my warp nacelle Bussards, I painted the inset parts in an orange-yellow and used foil strips on the "blades", with the backing disk painted black. I then used a combo of decanted gloss clearcoat and Sharpie marker orange (insert from inside marker removed then ink squeezed into clearcoat) to coat the inside of the outer Bussard dome. I used flat clear to "frost" the outside of the dome; that's how I got this effect:
  15. Not to mention in the cover artwork there, someone bent the engines! O.o
  16. This could be the reason for all the debris:
  17. Maybe Michael Keaton is just a bunch of squirrels in a batsuit?
  18. Right, which means a lot of survivors guilt from both starship crews and spacedock personnel, with bereft family and friends on both sides mourning the lost. I can also imagine many leaving Starfleet over guilt in their unwilling complicity in the Borg nightmare. With that in mind, Picard and Seven would have been of paramount value, as they have walked in those shoes (Particularly Picard and Wolf 359). I think afterwards, a lot less people would ever hold Picard in any comtempt for having been assimilated and used. They now understand perfectly how helpless one really is in that situation.
