Studio Nue gets all the credit for creating Macross but Big West (from my understanding) can decide to make all the Macross they want but without the creators input. Thus you have Macross II. I could buy all rights of Star Wars from Lucas. Star Wars is mine. I can do anything I want with it. I could call my changes and additions as the "offical" story.
