The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
Scyla replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The issues on MP-08 aren't bad per se but the toy shows its age now. First of all I'm not a fan of gimmicks for the toys since they usually take away from the experience of being a transformable toy and usually lead to a clash with my top priorities of a transforming toy (engineering and fit and finish). That said I think the two biggest detriments of MP-08 are the light up gimmick for the fist leading to a non posable hand and the tail wiggle feature make it floppy and flimsy in robot mode. I also don't like the way the torso transforms. It doesn't lock into place so every time you try to manipulate the toy you unseat the chest. It feels very floppy in hand too. The shoulder mechanism also needs to work perfectly. On mine one shoulder is pushed outwards leaving a big gap between the upper body and the shoulder joint making it a very unsightly robot-mode. Again due to the mechanism it feels floppy. Other cons would be the slim midriff around the waist and the cheap looking gun (again due to the fact that it needs to encompass a gimmick that doesn't really work well). Since I'm a bit of a naysayer I have to stress that MP Grimlock is a good toy (even a great toy when he was originally released). It just doesn't cater to my preferences and is too floppy. I think FansToys Grinder has the possibility to get all the stuff I don't like about MP-08 right (even if his waist is too narrow).- 9279 replies

So the Decepticon symbols are not painted on but stickers? What a disappointment. That was the one thing that Takara had over the 3rd party transforming toys. The purple color looks terrible in some shots but I know that purple is hard to photograph so I will wait for a final verdict till I have it in hand. Maybe another company can make two diecast AAA batteries to go in his chest to give him more weight. No real battery will be placed in my toys.- 17164 replies

I love the teal on Delta01. I don't think that the color scheme will change since it was in all the key images and the preview episode. It is probably just the lighting. the VF-31E looks also too dark. What do you not like about the head-turret lasers? Just the way they look? I think they are in line with the other designs in Valkyrie history.

I have a question to those in the know about the TFCC subscription service. What do I do to get the Armada Skywarp without joining the club? Will it be available from shops like BBTS where you can get it with a mark-up?- 17164 replies

I think several people have ordered from them without a problem. However I have no personal experience with them. Personally I would wait for Fanstoys Grinder since he will fix many of the glaring problems the MP-08 mold has. He also brings a fresh set of engineering to the table which is important if you experienced MP-08 already. This Grimlock is just big and that is all.- 9279 replies

I'm surprised how much Takara changed from MP-11/MP-03 for Ramjet. Sadly it has now even more gaps and unsightly spots on the underside. Maybe Maketoys version will a MP Seeker with a smooth underside and a sleek thruster area. I would be interested in a Skywarp, even if I have MP-11SW already.- 17164 replies

I'm getting it but the toy has some issues that I pointed out in my initial reply. The figure sure has some great aspects. With the exception of the helmeted head it looks great. The transformation on the core robot is neat. It has lots of details nice weapons. I love the toys where you can play dress-up with. The integration of the parts into the trailer is neat. Articulation of the toy seems to be top-notch. Overall I enjoy the look and feel of the Reformatted toys so I have to have him. However the figure has some glaring problems like the helmet and the empty trailer husk. The trailer really is the problem here. I mean you can't have him standing inside his gantry so why even bother with that setup. I would have been fine with the ability to place the core bot onto the shoes and just have the ability to lower the helmet onto his cranium. Anything just to not have the trailer as a zip-loc bag. It is also pretty hard for a primarily white toy to spark my interest because it starts looking translucent pretty fast which looks cheap to me. So while the toy has some strong pros it also has many weaknesses and I thought it would be more interesting to cover those since the good points are shown in most of the videos.- 9279 replies

I would rather see some news about the MB Blue Frame. This gets me thinking. What version of the Blue Frame would you prefer? A just bring it out as a reissue of the Red Frame but in blue and with a Beam Bazooka instead of the sword or one of the fancier variants out there like the Second L?- 6025 replies

I do. I think the toy shows his age in some spots due to the long development cycle. It was first shown in the comic for Terminus Hexatron their very first Reformatted toy. Areas that are problematic to me are the fact that the power cradle really doesn't do anything other than holding the armor parts. For the price tag I would has expected at least the ability to place the toy inside the gantry on the armored boots. Even some posable arms that allow to move the different armor parts to the figure should have been implemented. Secondly the armored helmet looks terrible it definitely would have benefited form a flip down face mask like Star Saber. Thirdly while I think they did a decent job not making a white figure look boring I think it would have been better to break the white color up more. Be it through painting the inside of the armor pieces in a dark gray or have a two tone white armor like the RG Gunpla kits. Lastly the empty gantry should have something to do. maybe collapse into a more compact form or something. To sum it up I think that the toy doesn't do enough for the high price tag. If you can overlook this I think you get a good toy that might not be up to par with their latest releases but still pretty decent. Minus the helmet it looks great, poses well and looks high quality from the videos I've seen.- 9279 replies

I like the design of the VF-171. It results in a much sleeker Batroid than the Yamato VF-17 for example. It has some bits that are maddening like the leg rotation that over engineered. Other than that I think the toy is good. The triangles shouldn't be a problem on the white VF-171EX toys. The key moment for was when I noticed that the main chunk of the torso actually locks into the spine of the toy. Before that the Battroid-Mode was a floppy mess. Afterwards it was quite enjoyable. This design is also a bit of a miss since you don't get the correct feedback from the mechanism. You can hear it click but the torso is still not locked into place. Other areas on the toy like the trap-door behind the chest armor, the collapsing strut under the cockpit and the mechanism for the manipulators are annoying but not half as bad as the video reviews show once you got the hang of it. The leg transformation really is the crux of this toy. It is terribly frightening because you think that you break the toy every time you handle it.

I think someone on the Speaker Podcast described it as follows: Japanese toy collectors have less disposable income and less display room than collectors in the western world. That means they have to pick and choose what they get. And if the decision has to be made between a VF-1J Hikaru Custom and a Regult and "both" is not an option I think we all agree that western collectors also would go for the VF-1J. I know I would. Since the HMRs are not that expensive and big I think Bandai can get away with enemy mecha and cannon fodder much more easily. I really hope that the line doesn't tank with the Monster since this item is as expensive as it is huge. Personally I was surprised to see it as a regular release and not a Tamashii Web Shop exclusive.

So it has CGI ships, CGI landscapes and CGI horses?

Maybe Bandai is willing to release a VF-19A.
