  1. We all know of the financial and time constraints the production was under in '82, but the issue here is not merely a matter of sloppy drawing or coloring mistakes. When it comes to Vermillion squadron, for example, they're remarkably consistent with the little bits of blue or brown on the white VF-1As, or the red stripe on the 1J... so I think it's clear that, in the case of the Macross itself, the studios just didn't have adequate color reference for the engine block. Nobody knew what color it was supposed to be! In my experience, it's really difficult to do convincing weathering on anything above 1:350. It has to be really faint and subtle, or it destroys any sense of scale. Don't be Stormtrooper Larry!
  2. Progress report: I have progress to report! It was quite time-consuming and labor-intensive, cutting those sections out of the feet. Lots of different tools were required. Now, what color are they supposed to be painted? As our resident jenius has demonstrated, Takatoku wasn't at all consistent with their toys... ...so we can't rely on the original toy colors for reference. An early shot of the engines seem to suggest they were close, though. Mind you, there was so much variation in their anime depiction, there's no way to establish a "correct" color scheme... My research suggests this particular scheme was most consistently applied, however. Modern merchandise, on the other hand, seem to have settled on this scheme... ...and there's certainly enough evidence from the anime to justify it, I suppose...? I'm wracked with indecision.
  3. Actually, I've been wondering lately why the Daedalus and Prometheus would've been painted the exact same blue as the SDF-1... You know, trying to justify it in-universe.
  4. Are you intending to repaint all the blue sections, or just the legs?
  5. It's not secure at all; I just grabbed whatever was handy to support a flight mode pose for the pics. It's usually displayed in landed configuration. Dude, I call BS. You're not gonna buy one. We know you better than that. You're gonna buy FOUR. In the meantime, these are for you! Live vicariously.
  6. That's clean work, Mog. Still, it amazes me how you all just repaint the Daedalus and call it a day. It's by far the least-accurate part of the whole toy, and I'm not talking details... I mean, the whole shape is wrong! You could whittle a more accurate prow out of wood.
  7. Applying Mr. Super Clear Gloss gives you a smooth, even surface to apply waterslide decals onto. Applying Mr. Super Clear Flat both protects those decals and blends the edges seamlessly, making them indistinguishable from pantography. The premium topcoat is a sealant, applied after all the weathering and chipping is done. Mr. Super Smooth Clear isn't as matte as the Super Clear Flat, but it results in a surface that looks like molded plastic. I usually use it over hand-brushed surfaces (like drybrushed hair or skin tones) to give that toyetic factory-finish look... like these Kubricks: Can you tell which figures are hand-painted customs, and which were manufactured by MediComToy?
  8. It took years for me to learn about all the various types of paint -- enamels vs. acrylics, oil-based vs. water-based, lacquers, thinners, etc. -- and the variables concerning its application. Results depend not only on the kind of paint, but also the brand, the age of the paint, the viscosity, mix ratios, and will vary greatly depending on the tools you're using and the environment you're working in. Variations in temperature and humidity will affect paint application even in a sealed environment, and the better-ventilated your workspace is, the more factors come into play... and if you're painting outside, you'll never get the same results twice. I'd assume your preference for a matte finish is because it hides surface imperfections, that would otherwise be visible as the light reflects off a painted surface. If the surface isn't appropriately clean, or smooth, or there are dust particles in the air, or the paint is too thick, or the moisture is too high, or the temperature is too low, or there's not enough paint left in the can, or the air pressure isn't adequate, or your brush isn't clean, or the paint dries too quickly... Well, suffice it to say, a dullcoat is always more forgiving than a glossy finish. Personally, I use so many types of clear sealants for topcoats that the formulation of the underlying paints (flat, gloss, matte or semi-gloss) is irrelevant... I just focus on getting the appropriate type of paint, in the right color.
  9. Absolutely not. It was fourteen years ago! Hell, I couldn't even have told you what company manufactured it... but Aoshima sounds right. 14 years' worth, I guess.
  10. Tamiya AS-16, Light Gray (USAF). Close enough?
  11. Happy to do the same now, since it's printed on the box... ...although the weight is slightly more than stated.
  12. I was assuming they'd been stolen by malcontent Zentraedi, and engaged in guerrilla warfare in South America... but your idea works better, since they look several decades old.
  13. In the meantime, I've found an exciting bit of Tatsunoko history: Episode scripts, from the production office. The writer's name is hand-written on the front page of each script. This is the scene where Ray meets Aisha nude in the barn... The dialogue prompts simply refer to her as "beautiful girl." Even more exciting, here are the complete storyboards for episode 4... ...with hand-written notations for each sequence. Recognize this pan-out?
  14. That's the aforementioned "Screen Color" release (with figures from Galoob's Action Fleet line).
  15. Yeah, I'd stick with the Japanese brands. Incidentally... What happened there?
  16. Rey's speeder looks fantastic! That Legacy Millennium Falcon is so absurdly undersized, it actually works better with Kubrick figures...
  17. Max has officially lost his mind. He now thinks weathering is camouflage... ...or is it the other way around?
  18. "And we'll make him a raving old man with a Yorkshire accent, who farts parachutes, and commits suicide, and Optimus will wear his dismembered corpse... like a backpack!"
  19. It's a lot easier to repair the shoulders than it is to remove old stickers, replace the tower pieces, or whiten old plastic. You're still ahead... ...depending on how much you paid for it, of course.
  20. Looks incredible, dude. I'm in awe.
  21. Westworld is far more compelling than last season, with flashback sequences that serve to enrich the narrative (rather than confusing it). I'd never considered the parallels before, but there are definitely deep thematic links with Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell...
  22. Yeah, I just got my 2nd batch shipment.
  23. Very toyetic, Rogueload! Did you mean to paint the entire engine housing black? By painting over the couplings, you've lost that iconic three-segment look. Looks like the white stripes on the Daedalus will need a couple more coats of paint, too...
