Macross 35 production Committee project signing activities
Mr March replied to Mari-ja's topic in Movies and TV Series
I'm not able to decipher from the post what this thread means myself, but I've been told this is about some kind of petition for the new Macross series to be another Macross 7 show or Macross 7 sequel. Hope that helps.- 14 replies

I don't know that much about the technical aspects of performance when working in and around special effects, at least not more than most casual fans have already heard. But I can discuss acting in general. You will generally find that many actors (but not all) consider acting as "reacting" and that performance is as much dependent upon the actor across from you as it is your own performance as an actor. You can actually see this in play on screen sometimes when a great actor is brought down by performing a scene with a weaker actor. To use a Star Wars example, Portman opposite Christensen is a good example, although to be fair both actors were incredibly weakened by bad dialog from poor scripts and a director not known as an actors director. Which brings up another good point that some directors are more concerned with performance than other directors, which can affect performance regardless of whether it's in front of a green screen, a stage or a location. Each director will have their own strengths and weakenesses, or perhaps better to say they have interests in film that differ from one another. Joss Whedon is known as a writer-director and particularly loves dialog. Edgar Wright likes visual styling and story-through-picture. Christopher Nolan adores the cerebral in film and has a penchant for puzzle and the surreal. Each one will bring their own vision to a project and may stress more or less performance from that actors involved dependent upon the priorities of the project. Digressing, actors generally like to be acting off one another, hence why chemistry between them is so essential. Acting across from a tennis ball on the end of a stick in front of a green screen isn't exactly conducive to great performance. Having said that, most modern actors have green screen experience now simply because of proliferation of special effects across film and television. So you do have a lot greater pool of talent able to act under such circumstances than decades past. Still, many actors appreciate immersion and the more you can offer them to feel a part of a fictional world (sets, costumes, props, location, etc) the stronger the performance.

Indeed, but there are so many of us geeky about Star Wars, it's socially acceptable

When good CGI isn't front and center in a film as showcase sequences, it's typically invisible. Most can't even tell good CGI unless it's thrown right at their face. So it's a mixed blessing when you make great CGI. It's also important to note that most who make these films want to "see the money on the screen" so a lot of visual effects get created for spectacle rather than embelishment. And those poor instances of silly CGI splashed all over the screen are the most common

Late casting happens more often than you'd think. Hollywood's marketing machine and your DVD/Blu-Ray special features do a great job of presenting the studio system as a well-oiled machine where everyone plays happily with each other to make magic happen on screen. The truth is far uglier, always on the edge of disaster and plenty is left to the last minute. Duke is right, major casting can happen not only late, but can happen while principle photography is ongoing. To be honest, given the scrutiny this picture is under, the time table set and the noteriety of all involved, the casting for this has gone remarkably smooth given what we know from the outside.

X-Men: Days of Future Past, in theaters May 23, 2014
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I don't know if it's true, but several film websites are saying Days of Future Past is the most successful of the X-Men films to date. Box Office Mojo has said the film surpassed half a billion this weekend. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=xmen2014.htm- 329 replies

Empire: The 301 Greatest Movies of All Time
Mr March replied to Kanedas Bike's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Have no worries, some of us got something out of your post. But I think you may have to remember that this is a discussion board; we should all accept how very little discussion occurs. We're not here to discuss, make friends, or share, we're here to scream our opinions, tell others they are wrong and perhaps play games because, you know...politics I find it interesting that I had to get to the #34 on the list before finding a movie that I DON'T OWN in my own collection. I was also surprised by how few comic book super hero films are in the list. Only 2 in the top 20 and more don't appear until #75 and after. I suppose we are still too early in the golden age run of super hero movies to start including many of them even in genre lists, but I suppose this generational list will be worth re-visiting in about 15-20 years- 21 replies

Empire: The 301 Greatest Movies of All Time
Mr March replied to Kanedas Bike's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'm not a reader of Empire Magazine, but it's certainly a list after my own heart. I've seen 283 of the 301 films on the list, LOL! It's a great read, but mostly it's just an affirmation. Preaching to the converted as they say. The list is dominated by genre films. It's like the list of films for 30-40-something film geeks and genre nerds, heavily influenced by sci-fi, fantasy, anime, video game and books of the 1980s, 1990's and early 2000's popular culture. Very "generational" favoritism here. Still, it's closest to a list of the best films that will ever agree with me. That's quite an accomplishment- 21 replies

Oh, dude I love this. This is great work. It's ironic that I should see your new model because for the next update of my website I have built a colored version of the Cola Bot (fan name) line art that turned out really well. I'd love to include your fan art on the M3 website if you're interested. Full credit will always be included.

A rather small and simple interview (understandably easy to digest given the program's format), but it's great to hear him talk of his projects. As for WW, I need no more from Breaking Bad. The show is brilliant and it always will remain as such. THat's good enough for me.

X-Men: Days of Future Past, in theaters May 23, 2014
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Golden Arms I too was taken aback by the violence of the sentinels. But I suppose, that's the point. They wouldn't be as scary if the results of their actions weren't so terrifying. Which just made the movie so damned good It's possible all the "dark future scenes" were meant to take place at night, but I got the impression the overcast skies were just part of the damaged done to the planet because of the war. It's clear entire cities (possibly nations) have been whiped out. It's also curious how few humans are seen in the dark future, only mutants and sentinels, possibly because the population of the Earth has been decimated. They do say in the films several times that the dark future is disastrous for the whole species, but that mutants get it the worst because they are being hunted to extintion. karmajay Besides the fact that their use in the plot was the most terrifying thing about them, I think what I liked most about the sentinels was that faceless, eyes-only look. The lack of a face mimicked the emotionless killing they did. Kaneda's Bike- 329 replies

Oh hell yeah. I love how scary the sentinels are in this film. The simplicity of their design, plot use and actions were just terrifying. Always great when a movie villain legitimately scares the audience.- 329 replies

The implementation of Blink's mutant powers in this film was fantastic. The special effects looked really good and they were quite imaginative as far as implementation. I liked the way in which she used the portals such that the sentinels attacks hitother sentinels. Very cool.- 329 replies

X-Men: Days of Future Past, in theaters May 23, 2014
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I understand and I'm really glad to hear your thoughts. We are mostly on the same page, I just wanted to promote being critically cautious for the reasons I've stated. And yes, there were missed opportunities in this film. Modern popular culture is mostly missed opportunities, lol. But I agree what social relevance Singer adds to his films is a welcome change to what is a very oppressive media culture. Which is no small feat for a major summer movie considering that merely trying to talk about such social injustice is often met with people trying to shout you down or dismiss you outright. What I think is so great about the X-Men films is the opportunity to explore such a diverse array of characters. The Professor X = Martin Luther King and Magneto = Malcolm X are very interesting analogies, but it's having female mutants and minority mutants that makes for some interesting stories that one might not get elsewhere. I was hopign Star Wars would do the same with their new trilogy and so far it looks like there are some really encouraging strides in the right direction being done there. Mystique is a great character and there's so many more of them that we could see in future films. What I also like about the Singer X-Men movies is how most of the characters are given something, even if it's just small moments. Cyclops has been terribly mismanaged for sure and Marsden in particular has seen his comedy talents wasted on the role, but plenty of the smaller mutants have been treated really well. Pyro, Iceman, Nightcrawler and Quicksilver were all amazing additions to the X-Men films and it would be awesome if that tradition were continued in the next movies. Oh, I just wanted to add that I think Channing Tatum is going to be great as Gambit. I know he has caught a lot of flack for a lot of bad movies he's done, but his work in films like "21 Jump Street" and "Side Effects" have really won me over. I have a feeling he might be another showcase mutant in the next film that gets a big moment- 329 replies

I like the VF-25F I think. I know it's kinda the obvious choice, but it does have a lot of that "classic" Macross look to it and I love that head design. I often use the F head for my avatars on forums. So sexah!

Hells yeah. I find a lot of the best films now are small gems like this or foreign films. District 9, Chronicle, Dredd, The Raid...these are worth ten times their budget compared to most of the garbage in theatres nowadays.
