  1. The triangle is one of the things the movie has right (I agree with you). One scene I really liked was near the end where it is obvious that Alto is trying not to hurt the feelings of Ranka or Sheryl. It will be interesting to see how the Aimo song plays out in the movie version part 2 as well.
  2. Any further word on how the movie is doing in Japan? I'd like it to succeed, "Star Blazers" was my first love... (Sorry Macross - you were second)
  3. Just saw it last night, I liked it, but I liked the series better. Unlike the original SDFM and DYRL, the increased budget for the movie was not enough to make up for the lost "content". As others have mentioned the plot does seem a bit disjointed. On the plus side, I like the movie version of Klan and Ranka much better - animation wise, plot and character wise they are about the same (which is good).
  4. This is the new century, that *IS* Wingman. I mean, he was most likely dumped by his old girlfriend...
  5. I loved Flesh Gordan, "The pain, the embarrasement, the Hemroids". And actual One Eyed Snakes... (OK - been a while, they might not have been snakes per say, but the sound effect when they blinked their eye was priceless).
  6. His solution to that problem was amusing though. Am I one of the few people in this world that actualy like this movie? (Note - I do not claim it is a good movie, I just happen to like it)
  7. Tried to watch the first episode of Strike Witches today, couldn't get past the first ten minutes (cat in the tree scene was the end for me). I never felt so dirty watching Anime before - and I'm a "Pop Chaser" fan too. [edit] - I also watched, and generally liked "Elfen Lied". I think the difference for me was that here the fan service was trying to be cute and it just came out perverted, where in Elfen Lied the subject matter and tone of the series lent itself to a more mature rating.
  8. If that is all wikipedia says on the matter then it is flat out wrong. The one thing that is ALWAYS verboten with a trademark is releasing a directly competing item using the trademark. As an example - Anyone tries to release an Apple computer (or shall we say a computer with another fruit like logo, which did happen) and Apple will (and did) put a stop to it. As for why HG will not go after Macross Plus and the other Items they let slip through in the early nineties, at this point they would have to take the owners to court (on their own dime) to get them to stop, and there is no guarantee that they would win the case - and they could lose their trademark by trying to do so, or weaken their claim by having the Original Macross owners in Japan get an exception allowing them to use the trademark as it relates to Macross the brand here in the US.
  9. Apple Incorporated (the computer company) vs Apple Core (the Beatles). That would be a good place to look. (not sure if it ever went to court but it is a case of similar trademarks)
  10. If they could turn "I Robot" into a film then they can certainly handle Pern, "I Robot" being a good sign or a bad sign I'm not so sure about... (Although I personally liked the film - I was expecting an action movie with a bit more going for it then normal and that is just what I got, and I had the urge to buy a pair of sneakers right after the movie for some reason)
  11. They did it through a quirk in US LAW, other countries do things by first use, the US does it by the first to register the name. Helping them is the fact that they licensed the first Macross product (SDFM) for US use back in the eighties. (PS - I could be off on the details, but it is through a quirk in US law that they are able to trademark the name - and I don't think anyone has tried to legally take it from them yet)
  12. TWO Bitchy teen-aged girls. (make that 3 of them, forgot one)
  13. I'm not watching it yet, but that "Cat [bleep] One" show is going to be streamed starting in November... http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-10-26/cat-sh-t-one-u.s-dvd/bd-planned-for-december
  14. "It's all fun and games till someone loses an eye!" Serious Sam - Just after killing the first one-eyed monster. "AAAARRRRR!!!", followed by "Oh Sh!t" Serious Sam - Killing the first guy that blows up when you shoot him, then LOADS of the exploding guys appear. [EDIT] EVERYTHING the elves say in "Elf Bowling" "Is that all the balls you got Santa" "Higher Wages, fewer toys"
  15. In those cases, let him have it. But thinking something titled "Day of the Triffods" is not worth following up on is not so bad, the title is right up there with "Megashark vs Giant Octopus" - the fact there is an excellent SciFi story hidden under the title notwithstanding (the excellent story is "Triffods" of course, NOT the shark/octopus...) [seperate Item] Not a remake per se (that I know of), but the way the aliens in "Skyline" snatch up humans looks very similar to the similar thing done in "War of the Worlds" from a couple years ago.
  16. Your razzing the guy for an opinion? I have not read Day of the Triffods yet either, and there is a good chance I never will (I read a couple books a week - mostly scifi - and there are still so many I can't get to all of them). I have seen the first of the Triffods movies and based on that read a short review of the differences between it and the novel - so the book does sound interesting.
  17. If you do watch it here is my take. (take it or leave it) The first series is very good, even the star blazers dub is good. I'd recommend either. The First movie, although the Japanese loved it I hate it. Take the first series, chop in the action scenes (not bad) and chop out almost all of the drama (bad). All the drama and plot is told through a voiceover, yuck... Second Movie - One of my all time animated favorites. Second Series - Just as good as the first (in Star Blazers too) Third Series - AVOID the english dub, never saw the Japanese version. third movie - OK Fourth Movie - OK Fifth Movie - I loved it, best quality animation of the entire Yamato franchise (till the latest movie possibly). I'm also a sucker for the alternate ending.
  18. The dub on that was pretty bad. Misa's VA being the worst, a pity too since the VA had a nice voice - but she did not use her own voice for Misa and it just sounded terrible, kind of like scratching chalk on a chalkboard... The way they pronounce Hikaru is jarring as well, can't these productions play the original pronounciations for the English VA cast so they can pronounce it right?
  19. I thought that was nothing more then a joke at best and a rumor at worst. Do you have a link showing where it is confirmed they are dubbing LLA as the side story they were talking about?
  20. Yes. At the start. Bill Murray's character will be in jail for some swindle. The other two should be in a mental institution. The black guy (can't remember his name either) could be doing a spot on "I love the 80's" - focusing on the GhostBusters. Rick Moranis would be a big shot lawyer now. The receptionist would be the only one left at GB HQ Sigourney Weaver could be a drunken bum (think of the original silk specter) The plot revolves around the baby from the second movie all grown up now - and still haunted. (Other then that pretend the second movie didn't happen). Different note - Favorite bit from the GB cartoon was when three ghosts "Beam" into the scene, one looks at the others and says "We're dead Jim" - and they go away.
  21. No it is not a remake, it is another take on the Appleseed Manga though. Ex Machina is worthwhile, I like how the cleaned up the character animation (I'm not one of those that hated the 2004 Appleseed animation though, although it was a little jarring). I'm not a fan of John Woo style action sequences - which ex-machina has a LOT of, but I still liked it and would recommend it (unless you really hate Woo style...)
  22. I didn't know she had a clubbed foot either...
