  1. This has very quickly become one of my favorite shows, and I just saw the movie not too long ago. I found it very refreshing to see a well adjusted and competent crew, and it was good to see that the protagonists took a beating every now and then. There wasn't a ton of needless drama, which was nice. Overall definitely a recommend from me.
  2. I'm sold, I want one now. I haven't played the game, though I would love to. Now if I had more money... Also to find a source!
  3. So essentially a fighter sized Macross cannon? Which would be more powerful than the typical fighter gun pod? Sounds like a good thing for punching through ship armor. With the gun pod previously mentioned, and the container system, not to mention the large wing surface (which can doubtlessly accommodate larger payloads), it just seems a prime candidate for a gunship. It's battroid profile also seems a bit unweildy for a fighter (but I said the same thing about the VF-25 with it's wing storage). When I look at it, I just want to hang the biggest missiles available on it and run it at an enemy capital ship...
  4. The Vajra were not bad for fleshing out some story influence, but I want more Zentran! Or anything humanoid for an enemy, something we can understand, preferably something 3 dimensional. I didn't mind the subversive plotting and shadowy stuff from frontier. I just don't want the villains to be of the saturday morning cartoon variety. The supervision army and rouge zentran would be great things to explore for the new series. And for the Love of God give us more VF-19!!!!
  5. Seto, you may be correct, but I reject your reality and substitute my own. In my reality, the UN Spacy would have a Maritime tradition, because Navies know how to work big ships and Air Forces don't (Stargate SG-1 bothered me the same way). Still, the rank title doesn't change from branch to branch in Japan, so to the Japanese it's all contextual, where in western nations we have this split between army and navy (most air forces using army traditions as they were generally an outgrowth of the army in some way). Japanese, much like German seems to favor descriptive naming conventions, rather than the rather vague descriptors used in English.
  6. That's just a super part problem in general, if I'm not mistaken. The Bandai seemed to have it a bit worse, especially in the shoulder parts, but the gappiness in the legs and wings because of the leg parts, is something they all suffer to a degree. Oh well, I wanted the base fighter, the super parts are a bonus to me, so I don't really care...
  7. There is precedent and provision for enlisted pilots, but those are extreme wartime conditions, which it could be argued that Macross is experiencing in SDFM. We don't see it in later productions, but then CF pilots don't ever really get any screen time, if they even get names... I had forgotten to mention that about USAF flights, using callsigns rather than colors, I didn't work all that closely with USAF flying units, spending most of my time working with the Army. I don't know how the JSDF does it, but I can't really imagine they'd stray too much from the established Imperial Air Forces way of doing organizing things. We can't all do it the USAF way (lord knows, the USAF shouldn't be doing things the USAF way right now...).
  8. As for ranks that we hear, when I hear it in english, I chalk it up to translation, as it makes more sense for Roy to be a Lieutenant Commander and for Hikaru to be a Petty Officer and later a Lieutenant Junior Grade, seeing as the UN Spacy (a contraction of Space Navy) would carry a maritime tradition. In Japanese the names of the ranks don't change much, if at all, from branch to branch (at least as far as I can tell, some of the junior enlisted ranks might be different). As for squadron composition, We don't really get a lot of information from the shows as to how the flights are arranged. IN SDFM, Hikaru's team was a three ship flight. In US Military aviation, the term flight can refer to 2 things, either the organizational unit usually under a captain and including 2-5 lieutenants, and some administrative enlisted guys, or the flying unit which is a rather nebulous thing, consisting of 2-6 aircraft. The typical US Military flying squadron is usually 14-24 aircraft and 12-22 pilots. In the US Air Force, the basic functional unit is the Squadron, flights are usually just an organizational tool to delegate duties and establish a clear chain of command.
  9. What was the name of that OVA? I really want to see it...
  10. You may have a point there. I really want a YF-21, and because the prices for the Yamatos are exorbitant right now, that dream will never be. That's why I'm wishing for it.
  11. Bandai should grab the Macross Plus and game licenses, so they can reissue the VF-19 Advance in Full plus Scheme, and the VF-19A scheme, as well as low vis, and so they can make a YF-21 Toy, to go with our VF-19's... I would definitely get the YF-21 at DX Chogokin prices... And also renew their Macross Frontier licenses and continue producing the awesome frontier toys. Let Arcadia have the M7, Zero, and SDFM stuff, since they probably did it just about perfect on the VF-1.
  12. The Yamato YF-19 is ok, very meh in comparison to the Yamato VF-19 (I have the F, need another and an S, so I can get the whole emerald Force). I don't own an Arcadia, and my Bandai is on the way. The Bandai, from the reviews, looks to be a vast improvement over the Yamato YF-19, and for perfect transformation, looks to be better than the Yamato VF-19, not needing as many fill in option parts. I'd be a little happier if there was a way to center the shield on the toys, but that's ok. It looks like I'm going to be really happy with the Bandai VF-19. Something about the original YF-19 look just gets me, and the VF-19F/S/P/Kai just feel weird, I think that they look to bulbous in comparison. Don't get me wrong I love my VF-19F, I just like the YF-19 better.
  13. My VF-19 Advance and VF-19 Master File Book have shipped!
  14. It's nice to see that this toy is so thoroughly enjoyable, it makes me feel good about my purchase. Now, if only it would hurry up and get here...
  15. Indeed, my dad, who flew both the F-101 and F-4, described the F-4 as an F-101 with the problems taken out, and also as a patchwork of aerodynamic fixes...
  16. I'm not going to argue with your experience. I didn't know that it was just the HTS pod that was the difference. Still, yes it can carry a large payload for a plane it's size and the excellent low altitude handling is one of the things that makes it good at ground attack, It's still not as good at it as say the A10. I agree that keeping the multi-role versatility in mind is part of the design process, and you're always going to have that. It's designing a fighter to specifically be multi-role that kills it. The F-16 excels as a fighter, but it's only adequate for close air support (using the A10 as the bar for excellence) because it lacks the payload and the proper gun. The F-16 isn't as good at air interdiction as the F-15E or the older F-111, due mostly to payload restrictions, but it's satisfactory (better than adequate). It is however as good a fighter as the F-15C/D if not better. I know you're always going to have those multi-role considerations in a conventional aircraft. I was mostly referring to the F-16's supposed replacement, the F-35. The F-35 lacks the internal payload to be effective at any of it, and they don't want to hang missiles on the wings, even though it's capable, because it will ruin the stealth characteristics. I'm not saying that an aircraft can't be versatile, just that you need to design it to do one thing better than anything else. The same applies to variable fighters. Most are designed to kill enemy mecha, with anti-ship being a secondary concern. The fact that they can transform makes them radically different from modern aircraft, so let's just look at fighter mode. The VF-1 was designed to be maneuverable, and fast, to counter enemy fighters. It's less effective on the ground because of it's light armaments, having only a gun pod and head lasers, while the destroids were heavily armed with a multitude of weapons. I may not have made my opinion as clear as it could have been. It's not the consideration of versatility in the airframe that I dislike, it's trying to design an airframe to fit all mission considerations, that I disapprove of. Case in point, the F-35 tries to be all of it at once and fails. Internally it can't carry enough weapons to make a good fighter, interceptor, or bomber, it can however carry enough munitions between the bays and wing stations. That however ruins the stealth profile, and then it can't be a stealth fighter anymore. No one man is good at everything, so too is this true for our creations, so since we need a bunch of people who are collectively good at everything, so too must we make a bunch of things that are collectively good at everything.
  17. You know, I wouldn't be unhappy with it. It'll take some getting used to, but hey, Ranka and Sheryl grew on me so... Still Babymetal is a bit more my speed in terms of music, so I'll have an easier time of it...
  18. It's certainly bigger than most gun pods, though you're right not as big as the VF-27 gun. Also, I'm not really all that familiar with how the quantum gun pods are supposed to work. That's certainly true to a degree, but most variable fighters seemed designed to kill enemy mecha first and foremost. The YF-30 seems like it's supposed to take out much bigger targets.
  19. Quality control, to make sure the bullets are properly seated in the casing, and that the overall length is within tolerances so that they feed properly. And the Anti Vajra ones you have too.
  20. I agree completely, drones are a good tool, for missions that are dull, dangerous, or dirty. Dull missions are things like running recon over a certain area or observing a target's comings and goings, and the like. Dangerous missions are obviously ones where you wouldn't want to send a manned aircraft, denied airspace, or even something dull like high altitude recon, where you have to worry about irradiating a pilot. Dirty missions are the ones where you have to go into a radiological zone or like the aforementioned high altitude recon. You put drones places you can't or wouldn't send a person. Having armed drones is acceptable when it falls into the 3d's categories, like when you need a ship that can loiter for 12 to 18 hours before you need to pull the trigger, or if you need to continuously paint targets for 12 hours for manned air strikes while a JTAC is racking and stacking said air strikes, because he's trying to keep his platoon alive. Things like that are what you use drones for, not replacing manned fighters, and you certainly cannot build a viable or even acceptable Air Force around a ton of Drones and a handful of stealth fighters. By the way, the episode you are thinking of is called "A Taste of Armageddon" from the original series. The best lines ever, "What have you done!?" Kirk- "I have given you back the horror of war..." Unfortunately, I think this movie will come off as making drone operators look like pussies, especially when compared to movies like BlackHawk Down, Act of Valor, Lone Survivor, and American Sniper, which all show remarkable acts of courage and heroism. I don't want to trivialize the problems drone operators face, because the fact is they're just as real as the PTSD that returning service members face. If you kill a kid, it doesn't mater if you were 10 feet or a half a world away, it still hurts. This movie is likely going to be trivialized and seen as a joke.
  21. So, yeah, I just looked up babymetal, and that is weird. I mean it's not bad, but it's odd. It sounds like you've got slayer or cannibal corpse going in the background, but with happy J-pop style vocals, it's just a strange juxtaposition of musical styles...
  22. Mom would kill me because she doesn't want her grand kids to suffer dutch names, like she and her siblings did, so that's out... Also, my last name begins with an F, so not going to do that...
  23. If I hadn't just blown my hobby money on a VF19 Advance...
