Why super parts with vf-1j (hikaru)

So, this has been nagging at me for awhile. Why does a lot of vf-1j hikaru toys come with super parts? The 1-j only ever appeared in SDFM with GBP-1 parts; we don't see FAST packs until after Hikaru gets shot down and takes over Roy's 1-s....

ermm.. perhaps it's because of the SDFM TV Series?

That's my point; I just watched the whole thing recently and the only valks we see with super parts are the 1-s and Max/Millia's 1-js

Watch again, Hikaru uses them in an episode.

Episode 16 Hikaru gets shot down. Episode 18 Roy dies. Episode 19 Hikaru takes over Roy's 1s. Episode 24 the FAST packs are introduced. AFAIK Hikaru never pilots a 1J again. Where did he pilot a 1J with FAST packs?

Because it's the only hero valk that doesn't have a set of custom FP's assigned to it back when they weren't really milking the mold. Back when the v.1 1/60's came out the FP version Roy came out and the strike came with it. The Max and Millia valks had custom colored FPs and the rest were DYRL which were darker. I guess they could have released it on the CF version but they'd probably prefer to bundle it with a more popular valk to get the most sales. They also didn't consider releasing it by itself because it was safer to release the darker DYRL valks with the strike cannon with it.

Watch again, Hikaru uses them in an episode.

Hikaru only uses it when he gets the Skull Leader valk. The 1J never has it on. The only armor he had on was the GBP.

Yeah, the Super 1J by Hikaru does not get any screen time, but when you're staring at a 1/48 Yamato Hikaru 1J, one has to admit that it looks pretty bad ass! Hell, I'm not a big fan of the J's but even I am willing to admit it looks good with some Super FP's on :D !

You are correct it is not accurate to the anime. Kinda like the confusion on the 1J with GBP by Yamato, it has gray goggles because it is actually the 1J with GBP from the DYRL movie not the 1J with GBP from the TV SDF macross. In most scenes in SDF macross hikaru's 1J does not have gray goggles so the all white head for the yamato TV 1J is actually accurate and the gray goggle with GBP from DYRL is also accurate.

So maybe I am wrong, but I thought after the Focker event before he got the VF-1S he escorted Misa using a VF-1J super. Maybe my memory is not serving me as good as it used too, sorry for the mis info lol. Or maybe it really was the VF-1S with super parts after the Focker event.

Screen accurate or not, I'm sure it was appreciated by some to have another possible source to get their hands on the TV colored super parts set. Not sure how available the standalone TV Super Parts set or the TV VF-1S w/ SP sets were (which is where I got my set), but I do know I saw quite a few TV SP VF-1J sets for sale during my V2 1/60 VF-1 hunting days.

The VF-1J in super packs may have some roots in a piece of concept art I remember. I can't find the image, and don't know the timing of it, so it may have come later, but it was a gritty image of the VF-1J gerwalk, with the classic fat-fingered SDFM look.

There we go, finally found (almost) what I remembered. The pairing of Hikaru's VF-1J with super packs goes back before Yamato did it.

This isn't the original concept-like image I remember, but the style is exactly the same, with the balloon hands, and overall level of panel detailing on the valk.

The art actually makes me wonder though, whether it was an after-the-fact thing, or if it came from before the plot of SDFM was finalized. Maybe they drew up the designs for Hikaru on his 1J, so as not to spoil the fact that he'd be inheriting Roy's plane? Or maybe the original concept work was done before they decided to have Hikaru switch planes? Have to probably ask Kawamori about that one.

In terms of model kits though, the pairing makes perfect sense, and Hasegawa's new 1/48 kit is the same deal. If you're making a kit to build M&M supers, you're going to mold it in white, because molding it in blue or red means you'll have to either split the production and make two separate kits (with separate packaging designs), or sell both in one box, which will bump up the price, and be harder to sell. And once you have a white kit with the boosters, you know some people are going to get lazy with painting, and decide to just make Hikaru's plane anyway. :p
