Tomorrow doing some chipping and the glossy lenses things under knees then calling it good. Just loving this!!! I think a gentle drybrush with some silver in a few key places and it's good to go! Nice job with this! Quote
Papa Rat Posted August 17 Posted August 17 (edited) @Big s @pengbuzz @Thom Thanks. It’s rather clunky and almost no articulation as expected, but a nice addition and first Mospeada kit for me. It gave me lots of opportunities to deal with seams, seams and more seams. Also only had 2 decals fail and fall to pieces when moving them. Not too bad. I want to shift gears and do a more modern build next. I need to get this VE-1 going. The test fit was great and excited to see it come together. Going to try and find a stand for it too. One more pic with better light. Edited August 17 by Papa Rat Quote

The paint job makes it look so modern despite its age. Quote

Moving forward, if you ever do this one again, I would recommend installing/ replacing the joints from the start, and reinforce the areas where they attach. I'd also recommend replacing some of the "arms" for the transform with metal rods or something. Just a few suggestions, as I'm not aware of a more modern kit for the Cyclone/ Ride Armor. Quote

electric indigo Posted August 18 Posted August 18 @Papa Rat You turned this oldie into something quite presentable while maintaining the old school feel, great work. _ After a series of space stuff, I'm onto another prop plane, Kinetic's IA58 Pucara. Quote
nightmareB4macross Posted August 18 Posted August 18 For the purposes of line art, I modified the heat baffle of the backpack to recess into the backplate versus being incorrectly attached to the backpack. Works great, especially in fighter mode as it supports the backpack and aligns it perfectly. Still a few dozen tasks or so to complete this, but I think it’s coming along well. Quote

Papa Rat Posted August 19 Posted August 19 (edited) @nightmareB4macrossThanks so much. I’ll take the compliment but I have so much to learn. I’d love to develop my own style of painting and I guess I sort of am haphazardly with every kit I complete. Hahaha Very excited to spend the next few weeks on this one. I might do some brush painted lacquers and some areas airbrush…Still undecided Lots of seams but many of them are not visible after completion which will save some time. Also first go at removing a mold line down the center of the canopy. I think it went well. Such a cool process of foggy scratched up surface to fine buff and polish until shiny at the end. I wish this kit had pilots. Oh well… Edited August 19 by Papa Rat Quote

The “arm” that attaches to the radar has two options. One is extended in a lower position for flight and the other option has it at an angle so it can be in position with just enough clearance when on the ground. Edited August 20 by Papa Rat Quote

Ok, that’s not as bad, but that thing looks so cool extended that I can’t believe they’d leave out the pilots. Hope you can get your hands on some and if it doesn’t have a flight stand, then hopefully one of those as well. I have the hmr toy and that looks awesome in fighter mode, one of the few Valkyries that I prefer in fighter over battroid or gerwalk Quote

They have designs for DYRL pilots that should work out great for this project. Now I need to find a flight stand. I see Hasegawa has some but they look a bit clunky. Anyone recommend a good stand for 1:72 scale? Quote

tekering Posted August 21 Posted August 21 As I begin painting my tiny Cygnus, I look to vintage promotional photographs for reference: This model was larger and more detailed than any ILM had produced for Star Wars, and the lighting scheme was particularly complex. See all those little yellow and red running lights, surrounding the docking ring in straight lines along the bow? How am I going to reproduce those at this scale? I came up with a unique solution for painting them, which required additions to the 3D model itself: Each of those lights is represented by a cylindrical protrusion 250 microns in diameter. If your eyesight is not significantly compromised by age, they might be visible to the naked eye. I can barely make them out myself... They're substantial enough to catch the edge of a small paintbrush or acrylic marker, however. ☺️ Quote

Last I heard (in February), Round2 was going to reissue all of the kits from the movie, including the missing section for the Cygnus itself. CultMan has pre-Pre-Order pages up (that so far still say Not Available...) 4 hours ago, tekering said: The Black Hole? Radioguy Posted August 22 Posted August 22 I suppose I should have said "completed" model, or, basically, "toy". My hands saw their last model kit some time ago. 😔 Quote
