While we're not going to starve, this does mean Thanksgiving and Christmas are pretty much sunk, and future projects are not possible. I just wanted to see this final one through. Take care folks. -Robert Take care and really hope things turn around for you and yours Quote
Papa Rat Posted November 13 Posted November 13 (edited) @pengbuzz I wish you and your better half all the best. Hope to see you around here again soon. ♥️ Here is a quick family portrait before hitting the hay. 💤 Just need to add the mermaid decal and a few brush painted gold emblems and this build is cooked. I’ll grab a better photo in daylight once all the loose ends are tied up. *note to anyone building this… there is no way to attach the head to the polycap. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I vividly remember the same issue happened with the Prominence build “yellow MH in the pic”. I decided to add a brass rod and some super glue to make it work. Kind of annoying but there isn’t much movement there anyways so it’s whatever. Edited November 13 by Papa Rat Quote
electric indigo Posted November 13 Posted November 13 @Thom That's a great looking cockpit, too bad it's mostly invisible in the finished kit. @Papa Rat Finishing a MH is so satisfying, isn't it? _ I finally got the Deer Stalker legs finished. Quote

As to your project: I would get some epoxy clay, smoosh it in there and then put the polycap in. Edited November 13 by pengbuzz Quote
Thom Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Those are a great pair of mechs @Papa Rat. Love the colors on them. As the saying goes @electric indigo, 'I know what's in there!' Do try to stay around @pengbuzz, if only to give yourself a distraction. And I hope you can still enjoy this season, even if in just a smaller way. Quote
Papa Rat Posted November 13 Posted November 13 (edited) @electric indigo yeah it does feel good to finish up a MH except for laying down that decal on an extremely wonky surface with wrap around that’s a 45° angle. It didn’t conform to the curved edge and raised surface in a good way so I’m scrapping it. Time to bust my chops brush painting the tiny mermaid logo. The Deer Stalker leg looks beautiful! Very excited to see this one come together. @Big s yeah the polycap is very shallow and the ball that needs to go in it just sits in it, there is no snap into happening. Very weird. @Thom Thanks so much. Hope when I get a better photo in some natural light that the shimmering paint job comes through better. Again it’s so hard to capture it with my limited photo capabilities. Lol Edited November 13 by Papa Rat Quote

Since I have no brush painting skills to speak of, I airbrushed the much larger mermaid on my ancient V-Siren 😅 But I'm sure you can pull it off. The kits I saw that used the decal didn't look good IMO. Quote

One day when I have more $$$ Thanks for the vote of confidence of brush painting. I bet I can pull it off too. I am hoping the super glossy topcoat will allow cleaning up any errors I make with acrylics easier. Decals have always been so challenging for me. I have lots of trepidation in their application. I ditched the shoulder decals for the 1:144 KOG I built recently and brush painted them which I think was more satisfying and I felt more in control of the outcome. Quote
nightmareB4macross Posted November 14 Posted November 14 Fighter Cockpit and Battroid Control Room done! Quote
Chas Posted November 14 Posted November 14 Holly crap! That is a stunning amount of detail! don't think I've ever seen the like in any toy or model of the VF-1 that's ever been produced. Forget the old Club M 1/48. THIS is the Ultimate Detail 1:55 VF-1! Congratulations on such a wonderful piece so far! Quote

Papa Rat Posted November 14 Posted November 14 Decided to add a light wash to the raised area so I can see what the hell I’m about to paint. It’s go time. Quote

Papa Rat Posted November 14 Posted November 14 (edited) I went rouge and just went to it. I think for its tiny size it will look just fine. I am unsure how long it takes for Vallejo to cure, but I need to hit this with some lighter fluid to clean up the wash that I put down before painting so the edges look tighter. I may also add a very thin black wash to edges once I’m done and then gloss it up. I think it’s looking more natural than the decal. Not necessarily better but I like it. nightmareB4macross Posted November 14 Posted November 14 I usually let Vallejo paints cure for three days. This allows them to fully dry out and have full adhesion to the surface. If you are planning to use lighter fluid it could get under the paint when cleaning. Use a toothpick dipped and soaked in lighter fluid. Using a cotton swap dipped in lighter fluid can help. Just brush away the edge first and then work the edge are from the surface you want to preserve. Some of the lighter fluid get on your paint, don’t worry. Leave it alone and let it dry. Quote

Admittedly: with no thanksgiving, no christmas gifts to look forward to now (money vanished for those) and no projects, it just adds to my depression. I'm already "small" in all of this, and if I get any smaller, I'll be able to hide under my 1/72 scale models! O.o Anyways, I'm taking up bandwidth here.
