I still have the hg in my ever expanding backlog, but having to do those seams on eight large identical parts was kinda the thing that kept me away. Papa Rat Posted October 8 Posted October 8 (edited) Was able to prime and paint a few elements today. Then it’s onto glueing said parts within the armor, seam removal and priming more parts. Having to finish parts within unfinished parts is standard on these old kits. No poly caps. I found some mr color lacquers made for the Gundam Char mech which are the same scheme and will be perfect for the armor. I’m stoked! Edited October 8 by Papa Rat Quote

Poly caps don’t hold up as well on the bigger kits like master grades and they’ve kinda switched to a styrene that’s more like ABS that holds up better. a lot of the Chinese kits are all ABS, like my Iron Sickie🤮. I still love that they’ve rereleased that kit a few times and haven’t corrected that awesome typo It does get a bit more risky with lacquer thinners though.Seen a few people online getting cracks on unpainted kits when using panel liners and that really wasn’t a thing with the older styrene. Gotta at least top coat kits these days. Quote

Big s Posted October 8 Posted October 8 41 minutes ago, Papa Rat said: That kit looks sickie! Lol Thanks a bunch for the info. Oh, it’s Awsome and surprisingly cheap most of the time. Basically a larger real grade kit with inner frame and waterslide decals and color separated parts, but for ten to twenty bucks depending on where you find it. A total bargain. It does have warnings about solvent based paints, but I found that a quick top coat seems to protect it well enough, just ran out after the inner frame assembly and need to get some more before adding decals. A great kit for a lazy build since everything is already in the proper colors Quote

A little update…Slow going on the Ashura Temple even for such a simple kit. There is so much painting, masking, putty, then glueing into armor, masking that and then priming and sanding, more masking and painting and putty repeat. So many elements need to be completed and protected while other parts are built around them and then completed etc… I feel like brush painting would of been a faster simpler method to get this cooked, but I want that airbrush look on this one. derex3592 Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Not exactly ON the workbench, more beside it, but anyway, resurrected one of my two IKEA Deltofs from the garage today and found an extra power supply I forgot I bought like 15 years ago when I bought the cabinets! (Kitten 🐈 had chewed through the power cords when she was little years ago so the RGB LEDs hadn't worked since) . I did have tons of Macross stuff in these for years but for now anyway they are going to flank my new hobby desk with recent models/car collections in them! Quote

A display case is on my wishlist. I have completed so many fun builds by now and they all just live in their boxes. It’s a shame. Might have to head to IKEA or maybe Santa will hook me up this year. Lol While waiting for paint to dry/cure I went ahead and built up this HG 1:144 L-Gaim Bat-Shu that Bandai put out. Wow it is such a well made kit. It is so dialed in with color separation, tight joints, and super creative/fun assembly to minimize seams. Maybe I’m easily impressed , but I was genuinely blown away. I look forward to coming back to this kit later and painting it. Should be a breeze considering the parts separation. I also have a OG HG L-Gaim in the stash and may get that built up soon. It’s fun to juggle these snap kits while digging into the old kits I love and that need way more attention. Edited October 13 by Papa Rat Quote

You should do a display with the L-Gaim Bat-ahi next to the one from five Star stories Quote

Lol Just a word of caution: IKEA discontinued the Detolf, so you’d have to see what other alternatives they have for glass display cases. The biggest drawback is that none of their other offerings really have that unobstructed look that the Detolf has. 🫤 Quote

Papa Rat Posted October 15 Posted October 15 (edited) Revisited an early build today while waiting for some paint to dry. I think this was my 4th build since starting this hobby? I didn’t know much about panel lining then and still don’t know much about weathering. I decided to add some brown oil wash to it and see what’s up. It sure looks dingy now but I feel like it really brings out all those nice details. Also all the messed up decals and poor seam line removal are all there as a reminder of how I have grown. Baby steps. Here is before taken last year and this is today after the wash Edited October 15 by Papa Rat Quote
Papa Rat Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Just needing a top coat and a wash. There are no decals. I rushed this as much as possible and it shows in some areas, but I’m good with it. Lots learned with this one. I know that this is a precursor to F.S.S. MH design ethos so I figure it’s no problem making this look dirty and weathered unlike all the high gloss pristine F.S.S. mecha. 😉 Quote

Thom Posted October 16 Posted October 16 And something I came across at an FYE entertainment store was this little Transformers model made by Blokees. (No, I never heard of them either...) But this is Arcee, I think from one of the cartoons. A bit different from the standard, but I thought it looked kind of cute, I like Arcee and Transformers, and so there you go! Not a very involved kit. You don't need glue or paint, and it took me about twenty minutes with some spru cutters and a light sanding stick. There is sope there to paint more and weather it, but I was just in mind to simply assemble something rather then engage my entire modeler-self, which, sadly, has not completed anything in a very long time... so it was nice to get this out and put together! And she comes with a nice base and flight display arm. Very cool. Now I guess I should start that Trumpeter Starcream... She does need someone to fight against after all. Quote
