Rock Posted July 5 Posted July 5 (edited) Pretty happy with how quickly I got the base kit together! I think I can re-break down and process the parts individually. Focus now on blending the individual kit' styles together. MS Mixing recipie: Robot Damashi torso/arms/binders Studio Reckless head/shoulder/skirts HGUC backpack/verniers RG Gp01 legs and feet The base is Bandai's 'new' 1/100 kit base. To adapt to the damashii connection point I simply used on the the included hex/allen bit tools and glued the head to the bases's arm. I really like these cheap action bases. They look really clean and I see tons of used outside of Bandai. Should easily support a 1/72 valk and not too pricey either! Edited July 5 by Rock Quote

Got to work on the IMAI 1/100 scale Glaug “iron type” Going for a complete build instead of separating out parts based on colors. I’m also going to brush paint most if not all of it in its classic scheme. I never have done that before and think it’s a great opportunity for me to try. I was inspired by the hand painted Hasegawa version I saw on HJweb. Should be fun if not a complete failure. Lol 😂 Edited July 6 by Papa Rat Quote

Lol 😂 If you're planning to paint that model in classic colors, I strongly recommend you strip the metallic finish off it before the attempt. L.A. Totally Awesome!! cleaner removes chrome safely and effectively; just let it soak overnight in it (available at your local Dollar Tree or dollar store). Quote

I think you'd be better off priming over clean plastic than a surface like that, as the paint has a much better chance of staying on the model! Quote

I’ll try stripping it clean before moving forward. Definitely try it first on a sprue. But I remember the chrome coatings usually didn’t do well trying to get paint to stick. I don’t know for sure on this iron coating or if Lacquer primer just sticks, but testing on a sprue is usually a safe test and it will show if you do need to do a strip on the parts Quote

I'd truly be upset with myself if something I recommended ruined a project on someone else! Quote
Papa Rat Posted July 6 Posted July 6 (edited) @Big s @pengbuzz thanks. I’ll report back once I track down that LA cleaner. I did some research online and people also use this stuff called purple power? Any experience with that stuff? Edited July 6 by Papa Rat Quote

I think they’re both degreasers for the most part and have heard that both products work about the same, although I can’t say that I’ve used either one. The last time I had a chrome kit was way back in the early HGUC gundam line with that old gold chrome Hyaku Shiki. Resources weren’t as easy to find at how to do the stripping process back then and I ended up doing things the hard way, by lightly sanding the entire surface to make it just gritty enough to take paint. I personally wouldn’t recommend going through that much trouble when much easier methods have been found Quote

pengbuzz Posted Wednesday at 12:15 PM Posted Wednesday at 12:15 PM More progress on the 1/72 shuttle: Stand is pretty much finished now; also finished the thermal blankets on the OEM pods: Still working on the tiles for the bottom; had to fill in part of it because the lines went off on bad angles: Yeah, it's kind of messy; I give up on trying to do any "clean" builds: More mess decals: Finished spacelab: Trying to source parts for a poseable CanadArm; we'll see how that goes. Meantime, finishing work on the Top Gun F-14 (not too happy with it but I'm not redoing the b*****d again. 😠 If it sill looks too dark, I'm painting the friggin' thing like an ice cream truck!!! I also need to photograph the 1/537 former cutaway TOS E, but I've just been unmotivated to do that. Quote
Thom Posted Wednesday at 01:06 PM Posted Wednesday at 01:06 PM Real glad to see the Shuttle being finished up @pengbuzz. It's looking good on its stand. Quote

MacrossJunkie Posted Wednesday at 10:08 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:08 PM I finally got a FDM 3d printer recently and decided to put it to the test. I'm printing out parts for a X-9 Ghost, I'm pretty happy with the results so far. The parts have come out quite smooth without the usual ridges/stair-stepping I would see on older printers. Almost as good as a resin printer, imo, but without having to need a separate ventilated space or having to deal with toxic chemicals and fumes. Can't wait to have this put together and painted. Papa Rat Posted Thursday at 11:12 PM Posted Thursday at 11:12 PM (edited) Getting the IMAI Nousjadeul-Ger going. First up is adding more interest in the back thrusters. Taking the void and adding some extra parts from a Hasegawa Valk and some .3mm pla. I think it looks way better. Might round out the edges a bit to look closer to the official line work. What are your plans on the pilot? Are you putting him inside? The upper panel with the head can pop off, and actually be displayed in an open position, but the panel just sits with friction. I had wondered about maybe some type of pin hinge to allow opening, but never did it. 13 hours ago, nightmareB4macross said: Good Lord!!
