  2. The Giver is the film adaptation of the bestselling 1993 young adult novel by Lois Lowry. 3. Looks interesting. Just had a thought, the Rock would have made a better Conan than that fruitcake Malmoa.
  4. The Raid 2: Berandal is the sequel to the acclaimed 2012 Indonesian martial arts action film The Raid: Redemption. Gareth Evans returns to the director's chair for this installment, with Iko Uwais reprising his role as police officer Rama. The film is slated for release on March 2014.
  5. "You know what you are?!? Just a dirty son of a b!tch!!!" The Good, the Bad and The Ugly Star Eli Wallach Dies at 98 R.I.P. Eli Wallach (1915-2014)
  6. The Kentucky Fried Movie KFM Films/United Film Distribution Co., 1977 Shout! Factory, 2013 Directed by John Landis (The Twilight Zone: The Movie, The Blues Brothers) Written by Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker (Airplane!, The Naked Gun) Running Time: 83 minutes Rated R for violence, nudity, sexual situations and profanity. "The popcorn you're eating has been pissed in. Film at 11." Cast Too many to name. See IMDb for a full cast listing. "Moscow in flames, missiles headed toward New York. Film at 11." Lowdown Remember when sketch comedy films were actually funny? Yes, majority of the segments were random, but the really funny bits were worth the admission. Sadly, recent attempts such as 2013's Movie 43 ultimately killed the format by being completely devoid of watchability. "What was that? This is not a chawade. We need total concentwation." To fully understand the value of sketch comedy films, one must look back at the 1977 film The Kentucky Fried Movie. It simulates a random flipping of TV channels with segments that spoof news shows, the oil crisis ("Argon Oil"), porno films ("Catholic School Girls in Trouble"), sex education ("The Wonderful World of Sex"), Blaxploitation films ("Cleopatra Schwartz"), disaster films ("That's Armageddon"), Hare Krishna monks ("Willer Beer"), stunt shows ("Danger Seekers"), and the demand for a better movie experience ("See You Next Wednesday in Feel-a-Round"). But perhaps the crown jewel to this film is "A Fistful of Yen", a parody of Enter the Dragon featuring a Bruce Lee lookalike with an Elmer Fudd accent. Martial artists Evan C. Kim and Bong-soo Han are hilarious in their impersonations of Bruce Lee and Han, respectively. Other segments feature appearances by veteran actors such as Bill Bixby (1934-1993) (David Banner in The Incredible Hulk), George Lazenby (James Bond 007 in On Her Majesty's Secret Service), and Donald Sutherland (Kiefer's old man). "All kinds of disasters happen in the U.S. Film at 11." Unbeknownst to today's moviegoers, The Kentucky Fried Movie boosted the careers of those behind the camera. Director John Landis went on to helm National Lampoon's Animal House, The Blues Brothers and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video before being sent to court for The Twilight Zone: The Movie on-set tragedy. The Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker trio created a string of comedy hits such as Airplane!, Top Secret! and The Naked Gun before splitting up to do their separate projects with mixed results - David Zucker with BASEketball, Scary Movie 3 and 4, Jim Abrahams with Hot Shots! and Hot Shots! Part Deux, and Jerry Zucker with Ghost and First Knight. "Rams plagued by fumbles as earthquakes rock Los Angeles. Film at 11." If you're in the mood for some mindless comedy, go pick up The Kentucky Fried Movie and its sequel Amazon Women on the Moon. They don't make comedies like these anymore. "Take him to Detroit!" Rating: A- References The Internet Movie Database "I'm not wearing any pants. Film at 11."

  8. Yup, Hollywood has ran out of ideas. Here's Earth to Echo, which appears to be a loose remake of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Super 8 - with some cheap CG effects.

  10. Based upon a lot of positive word of mouth, I decided to watch the new film Chronicle. If you've heard little about this movie (or have just seen only the trailer), I can say this is easily one of the best "super hero" films I've seen in years. Some basic info about the film can be found in the wiki link below (though don't read the details if you don't want to be spoiled): http://en.wikipedia....icle_(film) I will say just labelling this movie as a "super hero" tale - while descriptive as a sound bite - does the film a terrible diservice. Chronicle is so much more than that: in fact, it's fair to say this film is basically a live action Akira done right...in a way. The story of Chronicle is much more immediate and smaller than the story of Akira, but while the film eschews the broader evolution of humanity, social/political themes and human existence in Akira (for the most part), it does tell a very compelling "chronicle" of three young kids gaining super powers. What results is a very unrealistic premise explored in a very realistic way. The characters all act like real people would in the given circumstances and the performances of all the actors are spot on. The film can be incredibly funny but it also explores some dark stuff. You get a sense how the story will play out from the beginning, but that doesn't make any of the emotional beats any less poignant. I'd like to say more, but I don't want to spoil anything. I will say I was thoroughly entertained and enthralled throughout the film. I don't think I've ever felt this much elation at the idea of super powers as I was while watching the characters discover their abilities in Chroncile. For anyone who has ever had a dream of flying, you owe it to yourself to see this film. An online film commentator said recently in his podcast that all us geeks can rest easy now because a proper Akira live action story has been made. While it's not entirely accurate, there is some truth. If the live action Akira film ever happens and fails, Chronicle will definitely satisfy the same desire for that story on the big screen. Highly recommended.
  11. Hey guys, returning after a long hiatus. Quick question, I remember back in the day the Animeigo version of SDF Macross was THE version to get, however in my cash strapped student days that was a difficult pill to swallow. These days the Animeigo version is out of print. Is there anything comparable on the market now? I've heard the ADV version is... not as good.
  12. Has any one read the millennium series by Stieg Larsson that where made in to Three movies in Sweden and one English language remake?

  14. Live action Lupin directed by Kitamura, with Meisa Kuroki AND Tadanobu Asano? Apart from Goemon, this casting is AMAZING! http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-11-26/lupin-iii-gets-live-action-film-in-summer-2014-starring-shun-oguri
  15. The Gods Must Be Crazy Ster-Kinekor Pictures, 1980; 20th Century Fox, 1984 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 2004 Written, produced and directed by Jamie Uys (1921-1996) Running Time: 109 minutes Rated PG for violence, slight nudity and mild language. "Aye yai yai yai yai..." - Dr. Andrew Steyn Cast N!xau (1943-2003) as Xi Marius Weyers as Dr. Andrew Steyn Sandra Prinsloo as Kate Thompson Michael Thys as M'pudi Louw Verwey as Sam Boga Nic de Jager as Jack Hind Paddy O'Byrne (1929-2013) as the Narrator "The one characteristic which really makes the Bushmen different from all the other races on Earth is that they have no sense of ownership at all. Where they live, there's really nothing you CAN own: only trees and grass and animals. In fact, these Bushmen have never seen a stone or a rock in their lives. The hardest things they know are wood and bone. They live in a gentle world, where nothing is as hard as rock, steel or concrete. "Lately, strange new things sometimes appeared in the sky: noisy birds that flew without flapping their wings." Synopsis Deep in the Kalahari Desert of Africa lives a peaceful Bushman tribe that has no concept of time, ownership, or law, as they believe the gods above have supplied everything for them. One day, while Xi is walking, an airplane drops an empty Coca-Cola glass bottle, which lands on the ground in front of him, leading the tribe to believe it as a gift from the gods. They find countless uses with the bottle, but because it is the only one available in the desert, it introduces selfishness, envy, anger, hate, and violence to the tribe. Seeing the bottle as a source of evil and unhappiness, Xi takes it and travels far to dispose of it at the edge of the world. During his journey, he meets the clumsy biologist Dr. Andrew Steyn and school teacher Kate Thompson before a band of guerrillas led by Sam Boga invade the school and hold Kate and the students hostage. "Their language has an idiosyncrasy of its own. It seems to consist mainly of clicking sounds." "The funny thing about these gods was that they couldn't speak. They could only make chattering sounds like monkeys." Lowdown It's amazing what one piece of garbage does to everyone around it. At the same time, it's amazing how such a simple film does wonders in showing the meaning of life in a rather obvious way. The Gods Must Be Crazy is heralded as one of the funniest films ever produced, but it's also one of the most educational non-documentary pieces. It shows how happy Bushmen are with their lives while "civilized men" are never content with their environment or their belongings. Both civilizations go on with their lives until a Coke bottle is introduced in the picture, causing a sudden clash of cultures that spans at least three countries. Just about everything works in this story - right down to the little random things such as Sam Boga's two henchmen who do nothing but play cards. Even Dr. Steyn's unreliable Land Rover is a character on its own, as it's a source of pure slapstick gold from Dr. Steyn's struggle to open and close border gates to Xi's driving lessons. "Sometimes they hear a thundering sound when there are no clouds. They assume the gods have eaten too much and their tummies are rumbling. Sometimes they can even see the evidence of the gods' flatulence." N!xau and the rest of the cast give stellar performances, but it's narrator Paddy O'Byrne who steals the show, as he gives witty and detailed narratives of Xi and the Bushmen's point of view. Through his voice, you can understand the Bushmen's way of life and how they depict "civilized men". "That morning, Xi saw the ugliest person he'd ever come across. She was as pale as something that had crawled out of a rotting log. Her hair was quite gruesome; long and stringy and white, as if she was very old. She was very big - you'd have to dig the whole day to find enough food to feed her. "Although it was a hot day, she was covering her body with skins that looked as if they were made from cobwebs. She was doing strange and magical things, and it struck him that she must be one of the gods. He wondered what she was doing down here on Earth. But he was glad he met her, because now he'd give the evil thing back to her and go home to his family. So he said tactfully that he didn't need the thing, and that she could have it back. But she was very rude, and she walked away." Overall, The Gods Must Be Crazy is a great addition to anyone's DVD collection - even if you have to pay an ungodly price on Amazon.com or eBay. Rating: A References The Internet Movie Database
  16. Starring Scarlett Johansson as an alien life form that travels through Scotland to seduce random men and then kill them. Don't know if this even sees a wide release, but the trailer evokes some nice Lynch/Asian Horror Cinema moments.
  17. Strange enough I couldn't find a topic about this movie even though I've been following development of it for a while. So I'll post this trailer for Gravity, the next film by Alfonso Cuarón (who you might know as the director of Children of Men). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufsrgE0BYf0 I can't remember the last time I saw a trailer with this much tension in it. Very excited to see this film.
  18. Stalingrad is an upcoming 3D war epic based on the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942. The film is directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, who received an Oscar nomination for his 2006 film The 9th Company (which was based on the Soviet War in Afghanistan). Hopefully, it's much better than that snooze-fest known as Enemy at the Gates. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Da3EgZUA0Y Stalingrad @ IMDb
  19. Sabotage is an upcoming action thriller film starring "The Oak" himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Street Kings) and loosely based on Agatha Christie's 1939 novel And Then There Were None (try looking up its original title), the film also stars Sam Worthington (Jake in Avatar, Marcus in Terminator Salvation), Mireille Enos (Connie in World War Z), Joe Manganiello (Flash Thompson in Spider-Man 1 & 3), Terrence Howard (James Rhodes in Iron Man, Franklin in Prisoners), Josh Holloway (Sawyer in Lost), Olivia Williams (Moira MacTaggert in X-Men: The Last Stand), and Max Martini (Herc Hansen in Pacific Rim, Col. Henderson in Saving Private Ryan). Sabotage opens on April 11, 2014. Since it has Schwarzenegger, it's gotta be a good movie.
  20. http://collider.com/iron-man-3-shane-black/76695/ I'm a big fan of Shane Black. I think he should write and direct the next Bond movie. But this is just as good since he's working with RDJ again after Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which was pure win for me. Hopefully they keep the look and feel that Favraeu set up.
