  1. It's not just you. Either it's sagging from the waist joint they stuck in there, or it's really misshapen. Actually, it could be both. It just looks way too much like the old droopy nose I've seen on some of the older kits.
  2. That's the entire problem. Model kits are supposed to be more accurate than toys, and better looking, because they're more precisely designed, and molded. Some of the details may be more accurate, but a lot of them are horribly off, and this model is not as good looking as the Yamato toy.
  3. I'm kind of resigned to not getting my hopes up about this. The Battlefield games are all well and good if you like a realistic setting, but I want a "MOAR BLOOM! REAL IS BROWN! ALWAYS ONLINE!" version of Battlefront about as much as I want a hole drilled in my head. Although, if they can manage to expand on the large scale space battle scenarios from BFII, and give us a proper capship battle with full-sized ships and more complex interiors (ie, more than 50 ft between all the major ship systems ) I'll happily dive in.
  4. Quick, go copyright that term now so you can cash in when it propagates. Really, the design just doesn't make a lick of sense, especially after seeing the old TOS style D-7 cruisers during the simulator run in the 2009 movie. If the design team was short on inspiration, they should just go rip off some of the Kilrathi designs from Wing Commander 3. Heck, they're similar enough you could just port the designs directly between universes.
  5. Yeah, I did figure most of the paint errors are just rushed display model issues. But I almost feel like we're dealing with a "THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS" situation here with the chest.. I went back and checked, and no, Bandai didn't get the chest stripes on the Hi-Metal VF-1s right either. I don't think Bandai has ever gotten those correct, in any form, on any release. It's like they're completely insistent that they're correct, despite every other source disagreeing with them (including the original artist who designed the freaking thing). Do they look bad that way? Not terribly no. It's just the fact that for all the effort they go to, it's still as wrong as it was on the Takatokus, and they can't seem to take one look at the line-art to see what the problem is. Eh, I should say though, this really isn't about the chest stripes, because those are easily fixed. Bandai just seems to either be completely oblivious to the fact that there is a massive amount of source material that disagrees with them on multiple issues, or they just don't care.
  6. Part of what looks weird about the nose.. Because they turned that black ring into a separate piece instead of a painted-on stripe, it's huge. Waaayy too thick. Plus, they forgot that the nose stripes extend past it onto the nosecone. I really just do not get it. I mean, it's utterly baffling that they can make a new iteration of a design that's been done over and over in every format conceivable for 30 years now, and they're still repeating mistakes made on some of the earliest iterations. Are they completely oblivious to the fact that line-art showing everything wrong about that design has been available online for upwards of 10 years now, or do they just not care?
  7. Personally, the launcher kitbashing I can deal with. I miss the days when ships were built out of bits of real life aircraft, ships, and armor. I don't think they detract from the design much. It's the fact that the bloody thing looks like a freaking SPACE MOTH that kills it entirely. WTF? The launchers are probably the least offensive part of that entire design. Otherwise, I'm just sad to hear the spoilers were true, and that they had exactly the effect I was worried about. Entertaining movie or not, I don't think I want to bother. An hour and a half of fun won't make up for the tennis elbow I'll get for facepalming through the entire last 30 min. Maybe when it hits Netflix.
  8. Ugh. Not horrible overall I guess, but the devil is in the details. Nose looks severely droopy, as if they tried to mimic the old kits. VF-25 kneecap design still looks fugly on a VF-1. Legs just look wrong with those extra hinges and pivots. Tails are also sitting really badly on that one, hopefully just mistransformed. Details just look really wrong though, like they made up their own panel lines. And wtf is with the chest stripes? I mean, on the old 1/55s, it was cute.. but we've been getting VF-1s with the properly angled chest stripes for a really long time now. Are they trying to trademark their mistakes, or are they just completely unaware that those are wrong? Weren't those right on the Hi-Metal 1/100? Also, is it just me, or are those arms even more anorexic than the Yammie 1/48? They look tiny.
  9. Yes.. that's good design logic.. let's put a giant gaping hole right through the center of our main structure. And.. they splattered the entire thing with aztec patterns. Not the "random panels" style, but the "these are where the partitions between the individual rooms on the ship are" type. On the warp nacelle pylons. And the sides of the ship, where you'd be seeing the windows of the rooms. As for the Klingon... thing... seriously.. WTF is that? I mean, I know Trek has had some weird designs before. But the established races usually had a pretty standard look. I have no idea what any of this stuff is, and it's like they're being as different as they possibly can just because they don't want to re-use stuff from the past.

    Macross figures

I vote for the M7 version. Dress him as the Fire Valk and have him carry around the soundbooster.
  11. Assuming you mean the center head antenna, I almost consider "just break it off" a decent solution for that antenna. I've never cared for how it looks myself. You might try holding it straight with something like a small clamp or clothespin after heating it up again. I'm still desperately hoping they make an Isamu version of this thing.
  12. Don't think they're exactly the same, the ones from the VF-19 look beefier around the screw. I haven't looked at the parts closely though, so I don't want to assume the YF-19 ones would work at all. You might be able to tweak the YF-19 model file, but it could be easier just making a new part.
  13. What he said. Veef still has the replacements for the YF-19 version of that part available in his Shapeways store.
  14. Hey, I'd gladly take a VF-19F or S in those crazy anniversary markings. I'd happily strip them all off to get a white VF-19.
  15. Underneath the forward nose section, same as where the YF-19 had it. It's right under where the canards would be on the Fire Valk or 19P. Those two cracked pieces are there to hold the forward nose section onto the swingbar mounted in the torso. When you pop up the front half of the fuselage, it rotates around the pin that would be held underneath those two pieces.
  16. I think the original problem with the YF-19 was related to how difficult it was to actually separate the fuselage. It tended to snap in extremely tightly, and people worried about forcing it. If the tab holding down the forward fuselage got molded a bit too big, the same could happen here. Either way though, I think this is the first time anyone has reported this happening to a VF-19, and fortunately, making a replacement piece with shapeways again shouldn't be too difficult.
  17. Yeah, but sadly about $70 worth of plastic. If anyone wants to scribe all the lines, I can put up the current version for sale, but I'm planning on refining it more. I'm kinda just experimenting with what might look good scribed on it. Edit- And so, it begins. Given how close together some of the lines are, I'm almost thinking it'll work better to scribe them by hand than to embed them into the model. Kurisama, the lines scribed on the canards for your VF-0D kit look like they'd be about the right depth for this size. What size and shape indentation did you use on the model to get them to come out that way? I'm okay if I need to rescribe things after the printing, but I'd like to get them at least started on the model if I can.
  18. Yeah, we did get a bit off the subject, but they certainly make impressive additions to the tops of those detolfs. Without digging through this entire thread, I'm curious. I know I've seen various Hasegawa kits with lighting added, and I know one or two people have done (or planned) modifications to light up a 1/60 VF-1 kit, but has anyone ever actually tried adding LEDs or fiber optic lighting to any of the other Yamato or Bandai valks? Wouldn't be surprised if that answer is "no," since I can't really think of any valk of the top of my head that would be very friendly to that sort of mod.
  19. Yeah, I caved and ordered the updated E, TWOK 1701, BoP, and All Good Things 1701-D+ yesterday from Amazon. Couldn't stomach the cost of the B though, it was twice as much as any of the others. True, I didn't look around for better prices, but I had a gift card to spend. Now I just need to find places to actually put them. I need to find a way to display stuff one of these days. Might have to wait until I get a house.
  20. So, I've been working through the kinks of making a model printed from Shapeways. It's getting there, but I might need to reprint a few parts to try and remove the stair-stepped surface on them. Looking good so far, and the fit is near perfect, so I'm plenty happy. Now to go find my old reference materials, and scribe all the panel lines into it.
  21. If they ever get back to you, tell them you need a spare VF-25G crotch plate along with it, I'm still waiting for one.
  22. Crud, another one? I passed on the refit 1701 because I've already got the Bandai kit, but that's tempting. How's the quality? They do a nice job in general but they made some really dumb mistakes on the E and D.Edit: Ok, after some research, apparently I have an old issue of the E, and they've completely redone the paint since then. I'm gonna have to go order a new one now, since the original issue only had any detail applied on the upper saucer, with the entire rest of the ship left in solid colors. Maybe I'll get the BoP and B while I'm at it.
  23. Yep, that conversion kit is beautiful, but sadly we're missing the elongated cockpit from the VF-0D. Without the longer nose, I think the plane looks a bit too stubby, but that just means we need someone to build the nose section now. I'd gladly grab a Yamato version if they made it, but I'm still wanting a new YF-19 mold first.
  24. There might be better types of glue, but I was under the impression most folks just use a CA type glue on valks. They're not styrene, so toluene-based glue isn't going to do much good. Personally, I'm kind of fond of using white glue if I can, since it's easy to clean up. It doesn't form a solid bond, so things can come apart easily, but it's good enough for some things like canopies and insert parts.
  25. Good to hear, though I'm still curious if the spoilers everyone read were actually true. If they actually were, the next question is, did they detract from the movie, or work decently well?
