If enough of the preorders get cancelled, you'll probably see them popping up for at or below retail at NY soon. I don't know if it'll happen, but it's worth watching their listing page to see if the price drops from where it was before the release.

If it's as good as you're saying, I'm gonna have to grab myself one soon. Do you have to build in the support structure, or does it know how to do that on its own? Also, what's the maximum part size you can make? I'm currently experimenting with useful ways to cut engraved panel lines into my model, but I'm wondering if Shapeways will have the ability to leave lines this thin. That excalibur model is pretty small, and I'm probably going to have to hit around a 0.1 mm thickness to get the details I want. That is, unless I get my own printer, and blow the thing up to about twice the size it is now.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure those little things are fold quartz communication transceivers. The ghosts have them under the nose as well.

I had to do a double take on the name there.. I read it as "U.S.S. Hobo Creek" Honestly, now I'm tempted to make a couple of joke starships with goofy names, using some of the tiny models I've picked up for cheap over the years. Remember those old AMT "Enterprise Incident" kits that had the TOS Enterprise and two Klingon D-7s? I don't recall the circumstances of the purchase, but I somehow acquired three of those kits for ludicrously cheap prices, and have a stockpile of the electronics from them. The ship name that comes to mind at the moment though is the USS PennyArcade, NCC-1337.

Makes me wonder if maybe they weren't able to bring over all the old molds, but were able to keep the original CAD models. If forced into a bankruptcy damage control situation, it might make sense to just abandon the assets that would be the easiest to remake. I honestly don't know though. Given that they're unpainted, I'm personally hoping for a plain white strike pack kit. I'd love to make a couple of custom sets for the VF-1 kits I have, and white's a lot easier to paint over than dark blue.

Nah, I think I'm going to keep them generic enough to use on either the Alto or 30th versions. Might put the black stripe back on, but for now I just like them blank. They're the least busy part of the entire design.

So, took a bit of rubbing with Tamiya thinner (alcohol might have been better, but it worked), but it's mostly done. Debating whether to remove the stripes from the shield too, but it's taken a bit of work to get the yellow off the plastic. Say what you will about Bandai's painting, but they really managed to layer a ton of yellow on this thing. It took some sanding and scraping to get the yellow tint off the plastic, it had stained it yellow pretty heavily. Looks really nice with the white wings though, and the yellow bits don't clash since Alto's actually has a few yellow markings on it.

Well, I went for the full removal option for now. I just took off all the stripes on the wings, including the yellow and black. I wouldn't have minded if the black stayed, but it was too hard to protect it while I scrubbed away the yellow. I can always mask and repaint it. Anyway, if you go to remove those stripes, you'll have to mask off the wingtip pods. Mine lost a tiny bit of paint under the edge of the tape, and it's white underneath. Nothing bad, I can touch it up with black and it'll be fine. I'll also need to repaint the lights on the tips of the wingtip tails, since those were right over the top of more of that yellow. The annoying thing is de-panel-lining it now, because that yellow really sticks in there. I'm gonna have to scribe over a bunch of lines to get the yellow out of them, and even then the plastic is tinted with it. I might give everything a light sanding to remove that. Got one wing done, will start on the other tomorrow. You're right, it doesn't look bad leaving a tiny bit of the yellow, since even Alto's plane has some yellow details on it.

So, interesting discovery. As I went to start stripping the yellow paint off one set of the super packs, I did a little disassembly, just to make things easier. The wingtip fins snap in and out pretty easily, just don't force them. I do that, and surprise, surprise... turns out that the gunmetal wing pods are not entirely molded in that color plastic. The bottom half is white. So. If you're going to be stripping paint off, be careful.. the black will possibly come off the bottom half and leave you with a half-white pod.

Anyone else able to load bigger pictures? Either the forum is wigging out on me, or the thumbnails only are linking to.. themselves. -
I don't know about taking the nose apart, but for the cases I couldn't get it to lock, I would just remove the cockpit, and use the space to pull it up, then slip the cockpit back in underneath it. Never had trouble locking it that way, even if it was really stiff. If it still won't lock with that kind of direct pulling though, maybe leaving the cockpit out will give you enough room to see why it won't lock? It's a pretty simple mechanism, but it could be some mold excess or something keeping it from working correctly.

Yeah, without any of the logos, I'd grab one. Even if they put the main 30th logo on the back, and the large ones on the wings. I just think the amount of random text all over the various surfaces is too much.

Obviously a really subjective thing, but I absolutely love the soundtracks for FFXIII/2 and XIV. XIV in particular is a work of art I think, some of the most beautiful music I've heard period.- 6890 replies

Excited yes, but honestly, Battlefront was never Battlefield. I'm not sure I want a realistic Battlefront game. It was always half cartoony/cheesy, with a lot of silly mechanics that were just for fun. Case in point, the Ewoks vs Stormtrooper maps, or other things like that. And anyway, I'm more concerned about EA borking it up with DLC and other crap you have to pay extra for before you can do what the old games already included.- 6890 replies

Any game with a history of user-made content, I'll stick with PC. If EA kills that for Battlefront 3, they might not shoot themselves in the foot, but they'll be taking a groin shot to the fans. The thought of having to deal with EA's nonsense online crap though makes me think I'd rather just stick to mods for Battlefront II. I really miss games that had a local hosting option.- 6890 replies

See, that's just bizarre. Why would it cost $5 to upgrade when they charge $50 to ship FedEx from the start? Eh. Anyway, if it's FedEx, I work during their delivery hours, so I always request it to be held at their local distribution office as soon as it enters the system. They keep their office open 15 minutes after 5 (unlike the post office), so there's time to get there to pick things up after I get off work.

Could be a glitch, and I don't know anything about that particular program, but my first thought is that the surface of the bubble isn't welded to the object it's covering. Also, you say it's covering a curved part of the object.. is there a secondary surface underneath the bubble that hasn't been deleted?
-
Doesn't look bad with the dark gray parts (though not as good as the white pods on Alto's packs looked). I picked up a second set to customize, so I might just strip all the paint off of them and leave them plain white.

Now.. that I don't get... What did you upgrade from to go to FedEx? Cuz.. uh.. Even between EMS and FedEx, they usually list about a $10-$20 difference.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann

Oh I agree, I just hope it's possible to get the fighter mode looking better than their current pictures. I assume it would be with a little experimentation. -
Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
Really, I kinda don't get the point of borrowing Hasegawa gear to detail this one up though.. I mean, it seems a little redundant. If you're going to build and display a kit in fighter mode, why not just stick to the Hasegawa kit? If you make them plug in easily though, could make a nice option for display I guess. I am a little surprised they didn't mold the nozzles on the strick packs in a darker color, though that's probably because they're just a prototype. Question about the reaction missile mounts though. I've seen a couple different versions. Usually, the setup is two pylons, one being a dual mount, the other being a single, but I know I've seen some art depicting three individual pylons. Is that a SDFM/DYRL difference, or is that just some unofficial art someone came up with? -

They can be nice to look at, but there's a reason people keep going back and playing old 8 and 16 bit games from consoles via emulation. They didn't look pretty. Heck, you might be lucky to get 2 pixels on a character's eyes. But they were fun.- 6890 replies

No, but if there's no urgent need for something, that's $15-$20 to put toward another valk. I've started going with the cheapest registered/insured option on NY, just because their prices seem so out of whack. On the other hand though, I have had them upgrade me to FedEx after only paying for EMS. I really don't know why their shipping prices are so high to start with, but it's nice when they upgrade the shipping.

Well, while I'm not exactly tripping over myself to buy this one, I would definitely like to be able to pick which logos go over the stripes. Being able to do so would make me much more likely to buy one, assuming we get confirmation before the orders close up.
-
Well, you may want to hold off on the actual purchase. If this goes like the 171, you might find yourself able to buy one for retail after they get released. Nice to have the option lined up though, and glad you were able to correct the goof without too much hassle.
