  1. So I'm torn. Anyone have one of the Century Wings 1/72 F-14 releases who can tell me if I got a serious lemon, or if it's just the standard of quality? Got my VF-84 AJ202 out of the box about a week ago, and looked it over briefly before putting it back until I found a place to display it. I looked closer at it today, and the rubbery nose probes on it were a disaster. The front right one is a mangled mess, twisting down and outwards at a goofy angle, and the rearmost two were mounted cockeyed, as if the mounts didn't fit in their spots. I was able to pop them out and try regluing them, but they just do not fit. And my work to try and push them in better chipped the paint around the mounts. It's not too visible, but it's frustrating. Edit: Got them back on decently, I had to snip away a decent amount of the rectangular bases around the probes to get them in, but they fit now, and I was able to touch up the mounts with some model master acrylic gull gray, so they look quite a bit better than they did out of the box.
  2. I miss certain parts of the expanded universe. There were some real gems, but there was also some horribly broken fan-fic levels of mary-sue-ism going on in a bunch of books. The nice thing was, you could pretty much pick and choose what you paid attention to. There's a difference between building on the past and letting it age out gracefully, and slaughtering it without mercy. Ideally, you'd build on it, and grow away from it naturally until no one really missed that it was gone. This is sounding more like ripping out the roots before you're ready to re-plant, so you get left with an empty field of dirt where nothing's growing.
  3. I think the only one somewhat close is one of the VF-171EX releases that came with a Sheryl print on the backplate. Not going to lie, the Mikumo art is nice, but I don't want it anywhere near a Valkyrie. Plus, that particular picture is a painful reminder of exactly how many sharks were lined up for the plot to jump over. I just want Bandai to get on with it, and release at least one of the green 262s, I don't even care which one at this point. The white Roid version would be great for customizing I guess, but the idea of disassembling a 262 to paint it and reassembling it without destroying the paint job sounds like a nightmarish task.
  4. Actually, so far, I'm not really loving either, but I admit, I haven't seen this one yet. I'm trying so hard not to accidentally spoil it, but I'm not sure if I can last until this Friday.
  5. I know this is a special kind of nitpicky, but I can't really deny that the rotten designs have soured me on the new movies from day one. Is it really that hard to hire someone with some miniscule amount of artistic design talent who can come up with something that's at least merchandise-worthy? I bought plenty of prequel ship designs. Heck, I'll still buy them, if Bandai starts making them. The new stuff? No desire to own any of it, in any form.
  6. True, guess the toy is a bad reference point. More what I mean is that the shape of the exterior bulge they added to the 22 is nothing even close to the shape of the gunpods. Could be further internal changes, I just always found it very suspicious that gunpods that tapered toward the front would fit in fairings that tapered the opposite direction (and had embedded missile launchers, to boot). It's all animation magic anyway, I'd just be really interested to see an internal diagram of where the gunpods were meant to go.
  7. Actually, I don't think even the YF-21's belly packs covered the gunpods. At least on the Yamato version, they still just clipped underneath. The VF-22 holding them internally was sadly anime magic though, since the toys had nothing resembling adequate space to fit the gunpods under those belly plate additions.
  8. That thing is beautiful. Man, I wish Bandai would get to work on the rest of the canon ships, and then start making those game-based designs for real. Always preferred that style to the elongated rear section used in the old games. Now I seriously want a Bandai Missile Boat kit... original game, not the blocky X-Wing vs Tie Fighter variant.

Oh, nice! Yeah, the wings on both of mine can't do that, it's something about the little gray mounting points being too thick maybe? Pushing the wing hinges fully forward pinches the pivots under the upper fuselage, and just raises the wing tips a bunch. On one of my pair, the gray wing mounts were really sloppy as well, so while the wings themselves would stay in place, the gray pieces would just fall back and forth as I tilted the valk. The other one has nice sturdy pivots, so I put the packs on the wimpy one, along with the molded single-piece wing replacement, and figure I'll just leave them mounted permanently to not have to deal with all the itty bitty removable panels.

I'm not familiar with the design enough that I thought that about the legs, but I can agree it would make the design slicker. I think it still looks great in fighter mode, reminds me a bit of the designs from Yukikaze. The VF-2SS is absolutely a mess of an aircraft/ship design though. If overtechnology was an actual thing, sure, any mechanical hip joint strong enough to make a robot stand, run and jump would probably be strong enough to lock the legs in place in fighter mode too. In reality, and in a toy of this size? Not so much. It's kind of a struggle finding a place to hold this thing without knocking one or another major section out of alignment. I did notice you didn't push the wing mounts forward all the way either. All that tends to accomplish on mine is putting just enough pressure on the wing joints to make them flap up about 5-10 degrees.
  11. Or maybe something more like...
  12. I mean, the bigger question here is how many of those franchises cease to exist because Disney won't touch them with a 50 foot pole.
  13. Fair point, maybe it's not exactly on purpose, but rather a side effect of the genetic manipulation processes the Protoculture used. Guess my knowledge of Var syndrome isn't up to snuff though. Is it actually a naturally occurring phenomenon among all species that Windermere just exploited, or is it actually something that could only be caused by their interference? I know Messer seemed to have dealt with it in the past, but I don't recall if Windermere was involved in that case. Thanks though, that does make sense for Earth to be one of their earlier experiments. Putting in the bird human as a self destruct mechanism does make more sense if they were in a rush to vacate the area, and not able to build a more substantial failsafe system.
  14. I think trying to process exactly what Disney will be taking over is both too mind boggling and too ridiculous to comprehend for anyone to even attempt that yet. What I can see happening though is that a bunch of Fox-owned properties that don't fit the Disney image will probably get sold off to other parties. I mean, come on. Do you seriously think anything on FX is going to get a Disney logo slapped on it? Or that we're suddenly going to get a Springfield section in a Disney park? There's going to be some things that Disney gobbles up, and incorporates, sure. But there is just sooooo much of Fox that Disney is going to want nothing to do with, and I only hope they just sell all those properties off piecemeal, rather than outright killing them.
  15. He wasn't ever that funny, no, but his characterization in the original trilogy wasn't spectacular, and he wound up having to play the straight man to the rest of the cast sometimes. I don't think I have an issue with him getting funnier in his old age though. The character always needed some development, and Hamill's picked up a lot of perspective over the years that would definitely change how the character works. I'm not sure when I'll get to see this one, but I can't say I'm in any particular rush. I might wait until next weekend, and see it with family, just to have my younger brother to bounce thoughts off of. I admit though, I'm tempted to spoil myself on everything just to see if it makes enough sense for me to care what happens. Given TFA, my biggest worry is that after all the build up to whatever gets revealed in this movie, it'll turn out to be far less interesting than any of the fan theories have been.
  16. The Arcadia's shoulder pads also slide upwards though. I've never had any trouble with the range of motion on the existing shoulders, they were just fragile at first.

Ok, this is just awesome. Makes me really tempted to repaint one somewhere down the road. Might have to order a pair of Nexx ones when they come out to make a couple custom schemes.
  18. Honestly, the whole "failsafe" theory of Var syndrome sounds like an obvious thing to me. Protoculture get smart about manufacturing their minions, and decide, "Hey, we need an easy way to control these masses in case they get uppity." So they leave the Protoculture ruins throughout that little cluster of space to manage the races in that particular area. The question that begs though is what changed between the development of the cluster in Delta, and Earth? And which one actually happened first? Earth obviously got the bird-human, and there's no way the resemblance to the Protoculture ship Windermere used wasn't on purpose. But Earth didn't get the ruins used to seize control of the Globular cluster (that we know of), and the bird-human seemed like more of an emergency self destruct mechanism than a control override. Var syndrome clearly took hold of the human race and Zentraedi right along with everyone originally from the Globular cluster, so it's not like the Protoculture's methods changed that much from one race to another.
  19. This kind of thing is why I still purchase seasons of certain tv shows on physical disc. Looks like it's time to cram through all of Agents of SHIELD before the merger nixes that option, though.

Not sure about the chest area, but the backpack thrusters do actually have a little bit of a lock that clicks into place when they slide, at least to the rear. They still wobble around and look horribly fragile on their little struts though.

I can definitely agree that it feels cobbled together, but at the same time I don't think I can fault the HMR for that. The ship design itself is pretty much just a bunch of robot parts that kind of float around with no solid attachment to anything. The only thing holding any of it together is the stiffness of its own transformation joints, and while it doesn't make for a great toy design, I can't say it isn't actually accurate. There are a few areas they could definitely improve though. Some sort of notch or clicking joint to tell you when the hips are in the right spot for fighter could be nice. Also, the little nubby hands they included to fold into the arms are less than worthless, and actually make it more difficult to fold the wrists into the arms, because they pop off at the slightest pressure. The little ball pegs seem too undersized to hold anything, and I think I would have preferred a single piece solid fist to rotate in and out, for all the good those do.
  22. Lol didn't mean to derail things too much. But it seems like the side fleets seem to be all developing their own production lines and designs at this point.
  23. I'd be thrilled if we can bring that back, but the thought of literally everything else going along with it is making my head spin. That, and some conversation I was having with friends over the potential implications, and someone doodling a xenomorph in a tiara and ball gown.
  24. They tried to deliver mine today from NY, so I'll pick it up after work tomorrow. Have to load it up with the super parts.
  25. Wow, I thought the deal didn't include any of the television properties. That's... really bizarre to consider the implications of. I'm pretty okay with Disney consolidating Marvel and Star Wars, but bringing in everything else Fox is known for is a bit bonkers.
