Your most recent Macross or toy purchase! General thread.
Chronocidal replied to Gakken85's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
That's a really good price, and kind of tempting. Do they have a TOS-era D7 to go with it though? Only down side is that the full lighting on that one would look weird next to the painted windows on the Enterprise. I need to take a few pics of my recent arrivals, just got in my Arcadia Max, second HMR VE-1, and the Calibre VF-142 F-14A. -
I'm really unfamiliar with Darkstalkers in general, so I only know a couple of the characters that are commonly seen in other places, but I recognized the design for Hsien Ko immediately, mostly from seeing that sort of character style in multiple other places.

I read through the comments out of curiosity, there's actually a fair bit of demand for them to release the CAD files for the unreleased miniatures, and at least let people produce them themselves. Probably hopeless, and I'm sure they could easily be made better by freelance modelers, but that would at least look like they had something of relative value to give the backers... and that no one would have to pay shipping for.
-
I'd say the Koenig would actually be a very easy release, since Bandai's already made several in SMS markings. The scaling may be off from some of the other HMR releases, but many of those aren't entirely consistent in the first place. In some ways, the existing Bandai VB-6 is already more "Hi-Metal" than a lot of other releases, since it's got a pretty hefty metal internal structure. That's not to say I would necessarily expect them to do it though, since I think doing a release in classic UN SPACY markings would require a different license. I think the original Koenig only appeared in the VFX games before Frontier? On the other hand though, this is Bandai, and if they think it'll be worth the investment, I doubt anything would block them from getting the necessary licensing to produce more Koenigs in other markings.

I kind of had this same realization right after what I typed, so fair enough. I kind of want to say that's more what I would hope for, not necessarily that a lawyer would take up the case for free, but that some kind of clear legal precedent is set for failed Kickstarters, and whether backers are legally owed restitution when they blow up. I think for the most part, yeah, people need to get their head on straight that it's an investment, and not a pre-order for a guaranteed item. In this particular case though, Palladium pretty much was shooting themselves repeatedly in the foot with every lie they told, and then they blew the leg clean off by sending all those emails guaranteeing refunds if they couldn't deliver. That's entirely on them. They probably could have gotten off scott-free by claiming it was an investment, if they hadn't sent out all those guarantees of a product delivery.
-
Even if it wouldn't actually be profitable for the swindled backers, I have to wonder if bringing the lawsuit would benefit the kickstarter market in general, and make people more directly aware of the risks involved. I don't know if the audience for this particular failure is big enough to make any headlines, but it would be a nice cautionary tale to people fond of backing these kinds of projects.

I haven't looked at it recently, so I can't recall whether he follows the directions exactly or not. Really though, one of the huge problems is that Bandai writes their directions from fighter to battroid, and expects you to do them in reverse to get back to fighter. Because of the interlocks in the 171's legs, it doesn't work the same forwards and backwards. Dropping the knees from fighter mode one notch will let the legs rotate, but only because there is slippage in the mechanism. The reverse is not true, and the knees need to be perfectly straight to rotate the lower legs back to fighter position safely.
-
So, it was a CF that the leg blew up on, but the reason it exploded so catastrophically is shared by every version. The short version is, Bandai's instructions for how to transform the legs are wrong, and the leg twist mechanism is over-engineered with an unnecessary lock that only lets you twist the legs when in a certain position. Following the instructions will have you twisting the legs when in the wrong position, and it's a nice way to overstress the shoddy knees until they explode into a pile of plastic shards. The issue's been discussed at length in the 171 threads, so I'd recommend checking those out before you start transforming your Alto when it arrives. Back on topic though, I'm frankly very surprised that we haven't seen a bunch of bent and broken 262s across the internet. Maybe the fanbase for the design is small enough that no one really cared enough, or everyone just wanted it for the fighter mode?

I honestly don't even give two shakes about getting it in proper 3D. I just want head tracking. Still disappointing to hear, I can't fathom why they would not make the entire game compatible with such a literally game-changing feature.. but after the past two AC games, I'm not jumping on this one too quickly anyway.

CDJapan asks for up-front payment for a lot of methods, and no big discounts, so they usually hang around a little longer.

Same here, HLJ, and CDJ. Also maybe I was thinking of CD Japan's search.. it was useless.

Even with the advanced search, it sometimes completely misses them. There have also been times where they typo'd the item name, and everyone was running around confused.

Generally, I've gone for one at HLJ, and one at CDJ, even if I'm not necessarily after doubles. After some releases, I've been glad to have the backup in case something is broken on one.

Also, HLJ's search system is *notoriously* bad at finding them.. some people here know the trick, so you might be best to wait for someone to link it for you. The search will often not even find them until they are sold out.

Don't try and apply any sort of logic to the scheduled Bandai F5-key Destruction Derby. That way lies madness, and scalper mark-ups.

I'd still technically rate the 171 as worse, only because I haven't had a 262 self-destruct in my hands yet. Nothing else even remotely compares to those two though for me though. The 262 is just an over-engineered mess of parallel hinges that the 1/72 kit proves are completely unnecessary, because it accomplishes the same thing with half the moving parts.
-
This is really painfully true. It might not be perfect transformation, but the mechanisms in the model are an order of magnitude simpler.
-
I'm still iffy on ports after what's happened with previous games, but if this means I can just use my HOTAS and pedals, I can save a bunch of money and skip the PS4 entirely. Not that I will, because there are other games I want. But I can at least focus my VR purchases toward the PC only, which is still saving a bunch of money. My biggest concern is that we'll wind up with another HAWX situation, where the entire game is still geared toward using a gamepad, and no one on the development team has their head on straight enough to realize that most flight sim hardware doesn't use an analog view hat (not to mention all the other ridiculous problems HAWX had).

And apparently no love for elbows either. Hope they're not planning on any sort of cockpit poses. On the other hand though, I have to seriously question their intended market here. Is Robotech still on the air somewhere, and do they expect kids to watch it, and want to buy things like these? Or are they actually targeting these at some fanatical branch of collectors that will buy any Robotech product no matter what the quality is like?

I've got two of the three releases, and I guess I can see how they're fragile little things, but at the same time, I don't think they're any worse than a professionally built styrene kit would be.* They're definitely not as sturdy as toys, but if you're after a nice display model, I wouldn't let that deter you. If you plan on changing out the weapon loads every other hour, and swooshing them around a lot, yeah, that might not be the best for them, but you're probably not going to find a better representation of them unless you build one from scratch out of sturdier materials. * Full disclosure, I grew up building and playing with styrene kits to begin with, so my perspective is a little skewed. I've always been very gentle with any sort of toy or model.

Just so long as it's not Bandai who designs it.. their "Focker" YF-29 was probably the dumbest repaint I've seen in a very long time (outside of anniversary schemes). White tampo on white plastic? Really?

Remember, this is Bandai we're talking about here. Judging by the bang-up job they did on Mirage, you've got better chances hitting the right color by tossing darts around the paint aisle of a Home Depot. I've basically got zero expectations that the color of anything they release will match any concept art, render, production image, or screenshot of any design they produce. Besides, if they don't issue everything in the wrong colors to begin with, they can't make a mint selling you a "fixed" version in 10 years or so.

The A-Wing is actually the oddball of the Bandai bunch, since that was one of the few studio models that actually had a transparent canopy, instead of windowless frames. There's no glass-less option for that one. I'd forgotten about the Bandai VF-1 kit though (possibly on purpose ), but yeah, again, it'll come down to how accurate Wave can make the molds. Transparent plastic usually just winds up brittle and hard to work with.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, in theaters May 25, 2018
Chronocidal replied to Dobber's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Looks like they're just ignoring the ANH version of the ship with only three landing gear going forward. Or, maybe they're going to try and explain it away as those forward compartments being removed for some reason during ANH, and then reinstalled before the Alliance took up residence on Hoth. Can't really do anything but blame the model builders for being inconsistent. -
This is pretty much it, I think. The toys all reference the original concept art for the VE-1, which showed all the details of it in different modes. DYRL just never showed enough of the design for most of the art to make it on-screen.
