Oh no, i'm foreseeing another SDFM/DYRL canon-type debate somewhere along the line later... so when is SK gonna declare that the deculture edition is merely the drama show within the actual timeline? hehe. there's a big difference between milla and ai-kun. by the time milla came around, hikaru already had an idea about zentraedi defecting. in fact, he already knew that zentraedi are genetically identical to humans. (this point is probably brought home to the viewers by the fact that the three spies are in the very same room, chatting with the bridge bunnies). by that time, he was already desensitized to zentraedi. he coughed up the coffee more on the fact that max wants to get married, rather than the fact that she's a zentraedi. on the other hand, alto has no reason to believe that the vajra are an intelligent species, or that they could be anything other than violent, murderous bugs. so yeah, alto's reaction was pretty much reasonable (albeit lacking in foresight), and i wouldn't feel any resentment for him if he did shoot ai-kun. (besides that, grown-up ai-kun is kinda creepy. am i the only one who feels that way?)

While i was watching the original macross, I could never have imagined a time when i would watch Macross almost as soon as it airs in Japan, get to talk with fellow macross fans about it on a per-episode basis and in real time, have enough spending money to buy whatever macross-stuff i want (hey as a kid on an allowance, who could imagine such a thing as beautiful as "spending power"), download episodes, soundtracks and pictures, and know enough japanese to get by a RAW episode with, at least, the gist of what happened. It's all good baby!!

ummm... SDFM? ahem, ahem. EDIT: oops, sorry, replied immediately upon reading, didn't notice that there were several other repliers already. oh well, by your statement, you used the word "meet", so that ain't misa (radio only). in that sense, macross doesn't fit the anime rule (assuming such a rule is ironclad). rather, macross played with it a bit. it used that "rule" to confuse the viewer. "sure hikaru seems to have met minmay first, but if you observed VERY closely, the first interaction was with Misa on the radio. Ha! Gotcha!!" since alto saw sheryl backstage first, let's see if this "trick" gets repeated.

i'm pretty sure there isn't. if you watched RT as a kid, maybe your mind connected the dots somehow (after all, what kid's mind could actually take an entire beloved bridge crew being killed ignominously off-screen just like that??!). But if you do find it (probably a fan video), do tell. EDIT: Oh, and the scene was described with more detail (and with a little dialogue) in the McKinney novels. maybe that's what you remember.

Watched SDFM first. never hated minmay; i actually liked her character. a bit flighty, fickle and self-absorbed, maybe. but a lot of girls are actually like this, and i don't hate them. in fact, come the last episode, there's a certain regret at seeing a sad Minmay walking away, despite the fact that i liked how the triangle was resolved. and i know how it is to have the "great love that wasn't meant to be". That's basically what Minmay is in SDFM. Upon watching DYRL, i liked Minmay's character even more. In fact, if you watched DYRL first, it's actually hard to sympathize with Hikaru. Minmay didn't seem fickle. from the time she met and dated Hikaru, she's been constant with her feelings. she didn't flirt with anybody else, she didn't reject hikaru at any time. (now don't tell me Hikaru was merely being friendly to her... he hinted going inside a love hotel!). so she gets kidnapped by zentraedi while on her date with Hikaru, gets isolated from the fleet, and the very next thing she sees when she gets back? HIkaru and Misa have hooked up. and more than that, she even gets slapped by HIkaru just for hinting that she wants to be alone with him! i mean, looking at it from her perspective, Hikaru's quite the jerk. If you look at it from the perspective of the movie alone, that slap was definitely not deserved. but if you add minmay's behavior from the series, then maybe. if it's from robotech, then definitely. hehe. my theory: watch RT first: Minmay sucks! ewww. serves you right to lose the triangle! watch SDFM first: Minmay is nice. Misa deserves her man, but it sure is sad to see Minmay go... watch DYRL first: Minmay rules!! Hikaru, you jerk!

I love this episode! (not as much as ep20, but this one still has moments. ranka leaving and confessing FTW). I don't see how a lot of the early posters expressed disappointment and confusion. (is it because i only watched the raw and something got lost in translation?). the plot seemed to flow naturally for me. and things that might not make sense; if there were, i felt that all would be revealed in due time. or then again, i might just be biased by this point. like gubaba, i've reached a point where the series has taken me in, hook line and reaction warhead. whatever they do (short of an off-screen death for sheryl, ranka or alto) would probably have me as a fan by this point. as for this episode! haha, looks like a lot got that EVANGELION vibe when Klan went up to attack. eva with a firm ass! much of the drama of this episode falls squarely on the final scene, whre ranka meets alto. since my japanese is very limited, can anyone tell me what ranka exactly told ranka as to why she's leaving? or even if she didn't tell alto, why did she leave? Is it because she wants to protect frontier? she's guilty? or she want to find a peaceful solution? in any case, seems she made her decision even before talking with alto, since she left messages to nanase and ozma. did i get that right? If so, this looks like a call-out to alto for when he stood her up. "ok, alto THIS is how you tell someone that you're going away for a while. not that crrap you pulled on me with michael (RIP)!" gotta watch the subs! can't wait!

Hikaru/Rick: oh, that's sad. hey wait here's Minmay. -- Hikaru/Misa/Minmei dialogue about anything under the sun other than the fact that the whole bridge crew is dead. Then Minmay leaves -- Misa/Lisa: Oh well, there she goes, your ex-girlfriend. let me just hold on to you tighter. Hikaru/Rick: Sure. Oh, wait what were we talking about before Minmay came? Misa/Lisa: .... hmm... I don't remember. it'll come back to me if it's important, i guess... .

hey i'm a misa fan too. but i'd still have to go for Sheryl for this one. sure it's earth atmosphere, but all she had to do was fly it straight. if she had any minor skill or training at all, she could have at least managed to keep the thing in the air. sheryl was in space (not too sure if that's actually easier or harder. physics buffs here, care to theorize?), but she actually had pilot training, and she managed to fly with vajra swarming all around her, and she managed to survive for a while. just for that, the edge goes to sheryl, IMO.
