I'm starting to think that Bandai just packed a lot of money into sponsoring the show and the toys are basically supposed to be a cheap after-thought meant to get that money back as quickly and cheaply as possible. I hold no ill grudge against Bandai if that's the case. I'm glad they sponsored such a wonderful anime. I'm also glad they did the models for people like me instead of totalyl not caring. I don't believe that they'll make a good Monster. I'm expecting the Quarter to be crap. I think every DX toy they make for Frontier is going to be crap. That's life. And I love Ranka Pete Mr. Lingerie

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
VFTF1 replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, I went back to the original series. Got through Amuro's Desert I can't help but thinking that the episode was going to be about some kind of Italian cake or something Um - anyways. This is really good stuff. The light hearted moment at the beginning was a welcome change of pace. The courage, inventiveness and dedication of the Zeon soldier, as well as the cool headed care of whiskers (Gouf dude) for his men was admirable. It's just hard not to feel sympathy for ALL sides of this conflict. As usual there was just so much interesting stuff going on - and...well - Bright made his first bad decision. What got up his butt? Amuro was insubordinate, sure, but he ackonwledged Bright's order and line of reasoning and went back to work. A guy named "Bright" should be Bright enough to know that you need to talk to the kid a bit and forgive youthful exuberance and eagerness - especially when it's being directed to saving your butt. However - taking the Gundam in his civilian clothing and getting the frack off of White Base was the right thing to do. Too bad Amuro seems not to be planning on pulling a Basara and just leaving the war behind to go work on his music... Still - good good stuff. And I have to say, I prefer this retro animation to what I saw in SEED - even though SEED was very good - this is better. It's kind of like Alien. I love the ship in Alien, and I love how Mother is a bunch of old 70s computers and christmas lights - why? - because THAT IS HOW IT SHOULD BE. Why? Well - consider the space shuttles - I know they are going out of service like next year - and hopefully something new and better will replace them - BUT - The space shuttles (NASA) are STILL using the same control and computer sets/panels that were installed in the 70s and early 80s. Sure, I'm sure they've taken modified laptops and digi cameras up there - but it's not like they strip the space shuttle every year to install the latest version of Windows (or the technological equivalent for all of the basic systems). What really pisses me off about contemporary Science fiction shows - both animated and non-animated is just how NEW everything looks. When - if you think about it - a GIGANTIC space ship like the White Base is probably meant to be used for decades - during which time it grows "technologically obsolete" - although it can still function. So it SHOULD look "goofy" and "not modern." SEED was just annoying with everything looking like it just rolled off the assembly line. This show is good. Sad, monotonous and grueling - but good. Hardee Har Har That's too big Waaay too big It's not that price isn't an issue - it is. But the prices here are different - way different than in the US. So whenever someone says "car X has a decent price" then it might not here. I was hoping for a more simple minded run down like - check out a, b and c - they look spiffy, have lots of space and are fun - or something As for the environment - I did mention liking hybrids - those are supposedly good for the environment or something Besides, I live on a farm. Lots of trees, grass and the like. Hard for me to get excited over the concept of "the trees are all dying" or something when I planted about 50 of them and am surrounded by acres of woodland Oh - and good idea with Alto in make up That is a very under used picture and would certainly be great Pete Mr. Lingerie -
I tried to do a search - but I can't find the thread. Help... You guys need to read the long long looong discussion of the vital importance of Nanase that is somewhere in the Movies and TV section... Pete Mr. Lingerie

Well - I'm actually not really looking at it from the money/gas point of view, but rather from the point of view of aesthetics/comfort. I can't drive a manual stick shift car - no way. I was never any good at that and I'm taking my driving test on an automatic by default, because that's the only thing I can and want to drive. If I had a choice, I'd probabyl just get an huge buick or oldsmobile and be a pimpin' old man going too slow on the free way. But I need to have something big with lots of room in the back - so that's the only consideration. Still a ways to go before I get anything. I like Hybrid cars with electric engines. Do they make any large cars with lots of storage space that are hybrids of fuel/electric engines? No use for you guys to advise me on cars from the point of view of prices, since everything that's a car in Poland is probably twice as expensive as it is in the USA - so it kind of becomes a mute point anyway. I don't on principle have anything against hyundai; it's just that my parents had a toyotoa and have a new toyota and it's really cool. My girlfriend has a toyota, and she's also happy with it. I've been surrounded by toyotas since I was a little kid so I'm naturally inclined to get one. I can't get my dream big-ass buick because it wouldn't fit on any of the roads in this country. Oh - and one last thing - the car has to NOT be low. This is actually one bad thing about Toyotas - they're made fairly low, which is great if you're driving on a road that doesn't have potholes every five seconds. Poland is one large pothole. Anyways, thanks for the tips. Will check out the Camary I guess - look at some pictures and what not. The only mod I'm planning on doing is putting CALL MONSTER GIRL and that cute pic of Ranka on my door - if I can find someone capable enough to do it. Pete -

Oh - don't take me that seriously. I haven't seen probably 75% of what Gundam has to offer - and I am happy with MS Gundam (the original) and imagine that Tomino's other stuff will sit well with me too - I liked his Ideon and I'm enjoying his Gundam. It's just - it's not like Macross where I can do a series Marathon and look forward to XL pepperonii pizzas and lots of beers and all nighters and happy go joy joy fun. It's more like the more Gundam Tomino you watch, the more depressed you become - and it's not some EMO depression like "oooo so sad!" - it's more like...this show just grinds on and on and on...and there's all this tension and pressure but it's never going to get released because every single day in a war is like that and there's no "whew - well - we survived!" point... Also - there's no cutesy fun civilian life. There's a cook running around begging for salt. There's people saying "eat this poo because you need to feul your body just like you fuel your weapons" - eating (something I LOVE) is done without love in Gundam - it's just part of necessity. The civilians are old whiney people because everyone else is dead. The enemy - who keeps on dying in droves - is also shown to be compassionate, caring and humane - therefore you don't even have the pleasure of thinking "yeah - the evil guys have been vanquished" - but instead you're thinking "Oh no - those nice guys with families who helped that woman and child just lost their arms and legs and got hideously burned in an explosion" It's actually WORSE (in terms of depression) than Evangelon. Evangleon is "Emo" evil - it is pumped up emotion - it is melodramatic. Gundam isn't like that. It's just click - boom - die. Click-boom-die. click-boom-die. Eat your salt ration now. Click-boom-die. Not even the Mecha are fun. There are no "mecha porn" shots. It's just click-boom-die. 40 + episodes of this is gratting and a fellow needs to take a break. Pete- 3823 replies

I know why: 1) No cute singing girls 2) No cute singing girls 3) No cute singing girls This isn't to say that Gundam "should be Macross" - which is ridiculous, and I do enjoy MS Gundam for what it is - but in the end, I guess there's a reason why I'm writing about Gundam in the Off Topic Board of a Macross Fan Website rather than writing about Macross on the Off Topic Board of a Gundam Fan Website. The Transformers 2 Thread--A Michael Bay thread
VFTF1 replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
With all this talk about the past movie and toys -- returning to the subjecto of the new movie: are we allowed to post semi-spoilers that have been announced on other sites? Or are we supposed to maintain this as spoiler free? I just wanted to give my thoughts about the 40+ Transformers that are supposedly going to be in this film and say that I think that sounds awesome! Also, I hope thatthe news about Starscream being more G1 like means that not only will he get lots of character development, but that the movie in general will focus on the Transformers and things from their point of view and not so much on the "humans awe struck at meeting robots on Earth" angle which was of course necesary in the first film and finally I wonder what Bay's idea of a scene that "the fans are gonna love" means? Probably something very much out of the movie? Something iconic? The Touch playing in the background? What could he possibly imagine that "the fans will love?" Just wondering. Pete -

So - I'm back for my second posti in this thread. Gonna start the long ugly disgusting process of getting my drivers license soon. That's the dull part. The fun part - buying my first car - will come later. Actually, I don't really need a "car" as much as I need an SUV/station wagon/something with lots of space to put lots of big boxes. My only two criteria are: 1) that it have automatic drive (no stick shift) and 2) that it be a Toyota. Since my knowledge of cars is limited to my Transformers collection - can anyone here recomend what might be worth looking into? Pete -

Macross variable fighter/mecha pose thread

Well, even though I'm using TV 1J Hikaru, I guess I'm thinking of DYRL? Hikaru in that picture... where he did in fact pretty much act like that when he first met Minmey. Roy gives him advise about women only later, and by a twist of fate, Hikaru gets to use this advise - on Misa Pete -
And her feelings would be traumatically hurt if she knew that you said she was "not a woman." Bad enough she had to endure boob-ville at the Miss Macross concert and Boob-Sheryl is all over the guy she loves, it would probably break her little sweet heart to hear someone say that she's "not a woman" just because her breasts aren't large for shame tsk-tsk Pete

The Transformers 2 Thread--A Michael Bay thread

This is actually very possible. Considering that the effects in this film were revolutionary- perhaps it made sense for ILM to charge less and use a Spielberg film as a great advertisement for their own advanced abilities in the field of FX? All guess work of course. As for the plot - I think Mikheala and Giant Robots were basically supposed to make you forget there was one Pete -
Because the judgment of what is "seductive" and what is a "completely non-sexual situation" is ultimately a matter of subjective tastes. Also - even if we grant that Ranka is seductive and that her overture is sexual - then that is still a far cry from pornography. A pencil is "sexual" insofar as it is phalic - heck - just about anything can be seen as "sexual." As for seductive - ditto: there are various things that can be seen as seductive. "Sexual" and "seductive" are not synonymous with "pornographic" which by definition usually entails actual sexual activity. There is no sexual activity going on in that statue. Ergo, it's not kiddie porn or any other kind of porn. Pete
-
Yep - that's all Macross Frontier and anime in general are. Me, I prefer animals. That's why I like the Lion King, Sesame Street, and Tom & Jerry. Pete (in what should be a transparently sarcastic comment meant to draw attention to the fact that comparing Ranka in a bikini to kiddie porn is like saying that cartoons featuring anthropomorphic animals are actually erotic zoophilia pornography)
-
Now now. Let's all me friends, hold hands and sing songs together and have no more of this silly bickering. All contributions are valued And let's not rehash the past bust instead focus on creating a merry happy good feeling future. And just because I don't find something funny, doesn't mean that I'm not laughing and feeling happy I don't think any one was trying to put you down Taks. Sorry if that's the impression I gave you - but Agent One just made me laugh more than you did Pete
-
Hm. I think part of the problem might be that for me "Cyclonus" - like the majority of other TFs - are what the Marvel UK comics showed him to look like/be. As much as I am a fan of the cartoon, I envision the TFs as they were in the comics - Cyclonus wasn't blocky in the comics - he looked very marshmallowy Poor Smokescreen. He is - given his bio - a far more interesting character than Prowl and Bluestreak, but he never seemed to have gotten his come-uppance. Pete
-
Yep - in fact, I'm surprised that capes have gone so out of style Pete
-
Well - with all due respect, I disagree. Here's why: 1) Basara does NOT embody the hippie "I can do what I want regardless of the consequences" attitude, because he does only what he believes is right, not what he "wants." There is a difference. His actions are dictated by his desires - sure. But what are those desires? Are they arbitrary? Are they unthinking passions? No. They are, as Redwolf pointed out, the desire to show irrational (in the sense of non-pragmatic) love - the desire to save lives and bring love, happiness and fulfillment to others (alien and human). This is not just a hippie who is a moral relativist and "does what he wants man." This is a profoundly moral person - like a Priest who goes into battle with a bible, instead of a gun, and who doesn't care that people are getting shot and killed all around him - he's going to read them their last rights. He's going to hold a mortally wounded and suffering soldier and say "listen to my religion" basically - and try to convince that soldier to repent of sins before he dies. That is the analogy to Basara as well. 2) Oh, poor soldiers - Bassara is messing up their formation and getting them killed. Boo hoo. If anything this notion is a fantasy. War is chaos - war is utter complete total chaos. All formations are messed up the minute the battle begins. Commanders and soldiers survive by luck, accident or instinct - perhaps less so in minor air battles between very small numbers of jets - but in M7 we had huge fleets duking it out - it was WWI trench warfare in the void of space. There really isn't any "messing up of formations" going on due to Basara. There are people getting killed in a chaotic situation that Bassara is trying to stop in order to save their lives. Now - I don't mean to demean either soldiers or the instinct to protect those who you love. I just think that Bassara is also trying to protect people's lives and protect those he loves (all of humanity actually). His methods are non-violence. This is not a fantasy. In the real world, non-violent protest overthrew a nuclear power that had more weapons than the biggest empires in history (aka the USSR) - just to give an example. There are plenty of other examples. Non-violent action often is more powerful than bullets and formations of soldiers because ultimately what motivates people are ideas and truth - and if the cause you are fighting for is noble and true then you really don't need bullets to convince your enemy - you need a way of showing him. Yes- of course - there will always be psychopaths and tyranical people who are cruel and evil and "do what they want" - and yes we will always need soldiers with guns (or variable mecha) to protect us from these types of people. But no one is born with a sign on his forehead that says "Unrepentent evil bastard" - and so long as there is a chance to turning these people to culture - it has to be tried. Pete

I can't win My girlfriend sometimes accuses me of being a homosexual because so many of my male friends are gay, my fellow Macross fans accuse me of being a pedophile because I think Ranka is cute, my ex-boss says I'm a bad person because I don't sleep around with lots of women, and my male friends always get mad at me when it turns out I'm not gay, but they are and they thought I was too... Life really is a bummer. Pete
