What is the "official language" of Macross
sketchley replied to justplainZero's topic in Movies and TV Series
I've been thinking about this off and on, and there's another angle that hasn't been considered: names Yes, in countries like Canada and America, this doesn't mean much of anything. But we must always remember that Macross is made in Japan. Generally, people with a non-Japanese name are from a different country and tend to speak Japanese 2nd (or 3rd or whatever) and their native language first. Based on that, the vast majority of characters in Macross are Japanese speaking. There is a smattering of other languages and even some mixed ones (Isamu is Japanese and English?) I must stress that this isn't intended to replace previous arguements. Rather to support them. (I like the idea of English being the official language, but not the common language of the people.) -
Even the name is made up. TIAS MII has the following text about it: Marduk new model mecha: battroid form Marduk new model mecha: fighter form and... the nozels at the front/top ends of the legs are a "beam gun". It's possible that some more detailed (ie: more Japanese notes present) artwork exists. But...

The small one. Two publications refer to it by different names. The Macross F dedicated book refers to it as "Mothership", the modelling focused magazine refers to it as a "Carrier". The big one has yet to be identified in any print source that I've come across.
-
Ga! Checked another source. It's referred to as a バジュラ空母 (Vajra (aircraft) Carrier) in it! 母艦 comes from "Macross F: 2059 Memories" and 空母 comes from Hobby Japan, a modeling magazine.
-
I haven't seen anything specifically identifying it, in Japanese. Though, given what a mother ship is, it can also be labelled as one.
-
Psst: it's referred to as バジュラ母艦 - Vajra Mothership.

I'd always heard that America is the melting pot, Canada is multiculturalism. -

I agree with Lord Breetai. -
I wonder if it'll be anything like the 2 guides for VF-X2. They had a LOT of line art in them.

(bit late) He's been PMing me as well. I've glanced at both and I've got the impression that the two events are different (actual start vs. official start, or something like that). I'm currently in the midst of the Tech sheet, getting near the discrepency...

What is the "official language" of Macross

I'm referring more to how English is largely a mix of other languages (Germanic yet strongly Romance, + a bunch of other stuff). Grammatically, "the exception is the rule". From what I've learned of the Romance languages, the rules are generally consistant (the exception is the rarity). Which is also true for the Altaic languages that I've learned. -

From the standpoint of learner and teacher, it is one of the most TERRIBLE languages. Easy (or simple)? I believe Esperanto is one of the easiest. No, I don't know it. -
Gubaba (and others working on this project) - can you post a list of translations that you've worked on/completed but not typed, as well as what you are interested in doing next? Regarding the next sheets I'm interested in: Major: Variable fighter 1b Destroid 2a Minor: worldguide 17a Macross 7 fleet History M7 02a Varuta Martial attack mechanic SDF:M Zentraedi 10a Factory Satellite mechanic M7 UNS 9a Macross 7 Fleet mechanic D7 UNS 01a VF-5000 I think I'll be alternating between major and minor interests; as all the same stuff will make me go crazy! However, if anyone feels like starting one of those in my minor list, please feel free to do so.

Macross Frontier 2059: Memories ... is out! (Stupid retailers near my workplace don't carry it! Woulda had it 2 days ago if they did!) Quickie summary: some new kick-a$$ art a lot of picts from the series and magazines "mechanic data file" is dissappointing. It's in the same style as that Newtype article a while back... if you've kept abrest with the magazine articles, the only new stuff are: VF-25 gun pod open & transformation sequence, VF-171EX gun pod, Kaitos, Darufim, Sheryl's shuttle, Battle Frontier, Battle Galaxy, Vajra Lifecycle (Ai-kun), Vajra Semi-Queen, & Vajra Queen. NO STATISTICAL DATA Frontier City navigation (this is the meat and potatos for me. And the only line-art in the book! Backgrounds... anyhow, top, bottom, and side views of the City, and the areas include: San Francisco, Shibuya, Beijing [Peking], Shanghai, Taiwan (!?!?!), and the specific locations of the President's Office, Mihoshi Academy, Grafis Park, Space Viewing Park/SMS dock, Military Hospital, Aruto's (family) home, Macross Quarter, and Battle Frontier. They also have a small map of Island 3, with Forumo, Artificial Island (where they filmed the M0 movie), Alien life lab

Drat... you beat me to it (creating this topic): Conditions for readers: * translations are take it or leave it * expect some things do get lost in translation * different translators will use different words for the same or similar terms and concepts Conditions for translators: * use Hepburn, and not Nihon-shiki or Kunrei-shiki! * there are typos and perhaps other errors in Chronicles. These should be translated, and NOT fixed to make it consistant with other stuff in English in Macross; as it's possible those errors and typos are not mistakes at all! My translation conditions: * don't ask for scans. I live in Japan and don't want to end up in legal hotwater for something that is being actively published! * I'll be using romanized names unless I know the commonly accepted Anglicized name. Exceptions are Zentraedi names. My goal in doing this translation is learning Japanese, not learning how to write what someone thinks a name or term from a fictional language should be in roman (English) letters. Therefore, ブリタイ is Buritai. * If I'm unsure of the best term to use, I will include alternatives in [] (square brackets). Translation Resources: text (I don't rely on just one for a machine-code translation. I use all three, and compare the results): http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/ http://tool.nifty.com/globalgate/ http://www.google.co.jp/language_tools?hl=ja hard to find 漢字 (sadly, there is a surprising number of these cropping up in Chronicles... ガ!: http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dict http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi

Each Fleet NMC Battle section is unique?
sketchley replied to RedWolf's topic in Movies and TV Series
I agree with the technical stuff (haven't come across the flowery stuff). I've used a couple of the terms on some of the people that I know, and they give me the strange "is he making a Japanese mistake?" look until I show/write the kanji. Then they say that they don't know it and it's an uncommon term! And that's just "Space Destroyer" and "Super Long Range Emmigration Fleet"! I'm going to hold off on "thermonuclear reaction turbine engine" for now... -
Each Fleet NMC Battle section is unique?
sketchley replied to RedWolf's topic in Movies and TV Series
In with Mr.March. With the amount of time I currently have available, I'm progressing at a rate of 1 page (front & back) every 2 weeks. There will also be translation errors (things do get lost in translation, no matter what) AND as others have already pointed out - there are typos and perhaps other errors in Chronicles. IMHO, an "accurate translation with translation errors" is much more valuable than an "accurate translation with translation errors that has been "fixed" to make it consistant with other stuff in English about Macross". Who knows, maybe those errors and typos are not mistakes at all? The only thing that I ask of my fellow translators is that they use Hepburn, and not Nihon-shiki or Kunrei-shiki! -

You guys talking about the world guide sheet on Super Long Range Emmigration Fleets? Finished translating it weeks ago (almost a month!) If only I could find the time to actually type it up and post it... (sheets finished: AUN Soldier, SLRE Fleet, Space Destroyer, and currently working on the first Variable Fighter sheet.) -
What is the "official language" of Macross
sketchley replied to justplainZero's topic in Movies and TV Series
Shin's statement could be interpreted many ways. I've always interpreted it as Sara is worldwise and knows more than the native language of Mayan Island. It's also possible that during WWII, Mayan island developed a Cargo Cult, and adopted the language of whomever they chose as their god. Another possibility is that Shin speaks the language used on Mayan. As in, Shin's from Hawai'i*, speaks Hawai'ian, part of the Polynesian language family, and Mayan (the language) is also Polynesian. In other words, Shin's statement is too vague. *Not sure if he is, or isn't. Which is beside the point that I'm trying to make herein. -

They hired the foreigners to read the Zentraedi lines in DYRL... -
Looking at the model ship on the desk/bookshelf (1st picture), IMHO it's an upgraded ARMD space carrier. Perhaps one that's space fold capable? The other one from plus - still unclear. The M7 one definitely looks like an earlier version of, or a misdrawn Uraga. And... I'm going to correct myself: it could be the Haruna. Algenicus is the definite ship name (not necessarily class name) of the ship from M3.

Japlish. At least that's what us native speakers tend to say. (Fun fact: google search of Japlish results in mostly English sites. Japalish results in only Japanese sites. Ahh... Japanese phonetics.)
