  1. Now that the website is running again, I can give the link that I wanted to, yesterday: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g35166#msg35166 Also, the VF-25 et al are more of a quantum leap above the VF-19. The largest difference is the excess amount of power that the engines provide. That excess power allows for a whole slew of new tricks. SWAG in fighter mode, pinpoint barriers that are no longer pin points, transfering inertia into a sub-dimension and slowly reabsorbing it back into the airframe at manageable levels, etc..
  2. Actually, it can. It has the same low-thrust manuevering verniers as later VFs. Even the VF-0B painting by Tenjin Hidetaka has "space proving wing" on the side. Of course, it wouldn't be able to use it's conventional engines. But hey, it's not like it was designed to be put into combat, either.
  3. I'd go so far as to classify them: Generation 1: VF-1, VF-0, SV-51 (technically the VF-0 and SV-51 are only testbed fighters, and shouldn't really be considered finished products. Nevertheless, aside from the thermonuclear engines, there isn't a technological difference between them and the VF-1) Generation 1.5: VF-3000, VF-4, VF-5, VF-5000, VF-9 (post SWI refinements from actual combat data and acquired Zentraadi technology, increase in stealthiness, etc., but none, other than the VF-3000, are all regime. Not a major leap). Generation 2: VF-11, VF-14 (compared to their predecessors, they have a major technological leap. Or - they are a combination of all the successful traits of the preceeding craft - something that the gen 1.5 craft couldn't do) Generation 2.5: VF-17, VB-6 (generally improvements over gen 2, but not quite as large a technological leap. The Macross Chronicle tech sheet Valkyrie development history part 3 refers to their era as being the era of "heavy variable craft". As in, greater amounts of armour compared to their predecessors.) Generation 3: VF-19, VF-22 (Perhaps the best way to sum it up is that they have the capabilities of gen 2.5 craft, but in fast, manueverable airframes that excell in all regimes. The VF-171 probably fits in here.) Generation 4: VF-25, VF-27, VF-171EX The above is, of course, based on the Macross Chronicle Technology Sheets: Valkyrie Development History 1~3 (4?), which divide VFs into: #1: F-14 > VF-0 > VF-X > VF-1 #2: VF-4 > VF-3000 > VF-5 > VF-5000 > VF-9 > VF-11 > VF-14 #3: VF-19 > VF-22 > Ghost X-9 (with the VF-17 & VB-6 getting only a sidebar paragraph I'm guessing that if there's a 4th sheet, it'll be about YF-24 > VF-25 > VF-27.

Check the [ 2009.12.18 ] here for details: http://www.macrossf.com/movie/news.html
  5. For those that can't read Japanese, the flow chart basically says: ¥50,000,000 from sponsor ends up with ¥8,000,000 being spent on the actual production. The rest? At least ¥20,000,000 to secure local broadcasters, ¥12,000,000 for the key broadcaster, ¥10,000,000 to the advertising agency.
  6. Have not. Interesting. Now, a couple things that must be kept in mind (in addition to the aforementioned "it ain't Hollywood" point): - Box office Mojo is giving the figures in US currency. The link given above, at the time of writing, was "US $1 = 92.08 Yen". Therefore, the figures are not the actual amounts. - The PPP exchange rate is a better guage of the actual amounts involved. As we don't have that nor do we have the time and funds necessary to create it, the Big Mac Index will suffice. As of July 16th, the JPY was considered to be -1.0235% undervalued compared to the USD (assuming that the USD is standard, and the JPY is not, of course.)* - cost of production. UN Spacy's post states that 1984's DYRL cost JPY 220 million to create. USD $5 million becomes JPY 456,735,353.80 (@ 1 USD = 91.3471 JPY). Therefore, if DYRL were released now (ignoring inflation in the intervening years), it'd be doubling the amount invested in it. How many Hollywood movies do this? So, the real question is: how much did it cost to make the Macross F movie? * http://www.oanda.com/currency/big-mac-index
  7. Ah, rocket engines. Ok. Re: the turbines: wouldn't closing the intakes effectively turn them into rocket engines? Nevertheless, it's all beside the point.
  8. I translated the Macross Chronicle page on the MF Destroid (AKA Cheyenne II) a while back. There's a logical in-series reason why they chose it, and not one of the "later" destroid designs. If memory serves, it's because of it's smaller size, and greater mobility than the "later" destroids. Basically it can speed around the city streets, and is thin enough to squeeze down the more narrow streets. Of course, that's why the Macross Frontier NUNS (and it must be stressed ONLY the Macross Frontier NUNS) adopted them. SMS? Probably because the MF NUNS had so many, that using them, too, was economical. I'm not sure the "they're just recycled CG models" arguement holds water. As the designs have significantly different details (both the wire frame and skin), and the MF Cheyenne II would require significant man-hours of labour to create. Other than the in-series justification, the reasons may simply be a) easier to come up with an upgraded design than a new one from scratch, b) to better tie M0 into Macross in general, c) they were cool background eye-candy in M0. Don't fix what isn't broken, etc..
  9. My head, too. I think the writers were just trying to create some stats around how the VF-1 could get to low Earth orbit on it's own in the first couple of episodes of SDFM. Now, if we go with the workaround that I came up with: the VF-1 expends all of it's fuel getting to low orbit, especially because it converts the engines to "rocket" mode, and leave the max speeds for sustained operations at altitude, it probably makes a bit more sense. Which essentially is what the latest information available in Great Mechanics.DX and Macross Chronicle supports. Even to the point of the VF-4 being a space optimized fighter. LOL
  10. They're not retractable. From Pg 079: "VF-1 Thermonuclear Turbine Engine FF-2001 Thermonuclear Turbine Engine (L) Engine Nozzle (normal) ® Engine Nozzle (when equipped with GERWALK flow controller)" From what I understand, it's optional equipment. Rockets? Shouldn't that be "12 semi-conformal medium range missiles"? http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g35718#msg35718 (scroll down to VF-4) Hmm... it's possible, as there's nothing that says that they can't (other than the physics of hypersonic air entering a turbine engine, but that wasn't your point. ) Anyhow, more recent info on the VF-4: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g35166#msg35166 (pretty much all of it is indirectly or directly related to the VF-4) http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g35717#msg35717 (scroll down to VF-4)
  11. Nods. True. It's a logical extrapolation of how the air-breathing turbine jet engine becomes, essentially, a rocket engine. To my understanding, the VF-4 also contains ramjets (or was it scramjets?), but they are seperate from the engine nacelle thermonuclear reaction turbine engines. Not to mention that it also has seperate rocket engines... anyhow, the point being - if the VF-1 could do it, why couldn't the VF-4 be able to. Ergo: despite the coolness factor, it just doesn't fit the technological chronology.
  12. I second this. Some of the pictures of the Prometheus, especially when semi-submerged are almost drool enducing. There is a whole bunch of other stuff that is cool in the book - NATO weapons on the wings, technical specs, deployment numbers and quantities produced. It's a shame that the book has presented so much in contradiction to what has been established, that it blankets the new stuff in the shadow of doubt. Shame, really.
  13. I fully agree with this. What has become one of the main, unique features of Macross is setting the stories in gigantic emigrant vessels in giant fleets exploring the galaxy. The MII timeline pretty much precludes that unique feature. Though, I think MII having blown up the Macross fortress might have a lot to do with it... the Macross Fortress being the equivalent to the dog in a live action movie.
  14. I don't think his credibility matters - what with all the producers and financers basically dictating the tone and content (AKA all the directorial decisions) of the movie. It'll end up being the same-old-same-old, with no risky dramatic departures from the preceeding three (or first one). Also, from the director's point of view, it makes sense to toe the line - as if this film is successful, he'll end up getting carte blanche on his next film project. A la Peter Jackson with "King Kong". It's a shame to see Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom not returning; but it makes sense as their characters have already walked off into the sunset (or sunk into it... or whatever). It's good that Geoffrey Rush is coming back, as he makes a good foil and counter to the Johnny Depp character. But $55.5 million USD? That just goes to show how desperate the financers are... wasn't "District 9" made for $30 million USD?
  15. http://www.futabasha.co.jp/booksdb/book/bo...75-46449-8.html Great Mechanics.DX 11 is out, and has 4 page article on the Macross F movie. 1st two pages are on the VF-25 Tornado pack. Sadly, there is no hard stats, but there are descriptions of the major components (revolving style engine pods, high manuverability verniers, etc.). There's some nice top/front/side images of it too, that are sweet. There's also a paragraph on the changes to the VFs other than Aruto's. The last two pages are about the changes, in general, to Macross F in the movie. There's a nice, but small, image of the revised Macross Quarter in battroid (?( mode as well as the new Vajra stage (they describe it as having a preying mantis shape).
  16. Started the "VF-171EX Nightmare Plus EX" sheet: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g36137#msg36137 It's a shame that the data block doesn't indicate that the wing missiles are listed per hardpoint... though the images on the other side of the page pretty much state that the quantity is double. Hopefully the text on that side further clarifies things. I'm happy that this sheet clarifies a bunch of names and the abilities of the missiles. The other side of the page also mentions the "large size MDE warheads", aka "Dimension Cutters" that some VF-171EX are seen sporting in the last couple of episodes of MF.
  17. Found the translation (from Macross F Official Fan Book): http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g31143#msg31143 Yes, it's echoing other books. No, there is no VF-171EXS, but yes, there is an RVF-171EX (aka Luca's craft). So, just to clarify, the Armour Packs are: Normal Type Command Specification Type (normal type armour pack + shoulder armour packs and leg boosters).
  18. The Aruto version, and everyone elses. I did a translation of it a while ago...
  19. It was there. All of it except for the Destroid sheet in the mechanics section. (Which is funny, how it appears in Sato's quote of my post!) Anyhow, about that Destroid sheet. Me thinks it's the M0 Destroids. You know, I think I'm starting to notice an alarming trend: material in MC is starting to get truncated and crammed in. A real shame...
  20. Technically it's the "C" sheet of the VF-11C. Nope. I agree that Catherine glass should have got a full page, not half. Seems to me like they're really skimping on MF character detail. Or is it simply that there isn't that much background detail for these characters? LOL Me thinks it's probably because there's a plethora of other publications covering MF characters these days there's no need for it. Nevertheless, it's surprising that all of the NUNS characters and Zentraadi characters in MF are covered in only 3 sheets! Yup. Fold quartz is mentioned quite a bit on the page. Probably the DYRL version. But you never know.
  21. This is wierd... no one's posted the contents of #38 yet. Contents #37: VF-171EX: with the RVF-171 and both varients of the armour pack on the back. It looks to me like the medium-bore beam guns in the arms of the VF-17 are present in the VF-171EX (the VF-171, too?) The data block has: two sets of guns (machineguns and beam cannons). All the missiles (including wing-missiles) are given names. Why couldn't this data be on the VF-171 sheet, too?! UN Spacy Transport Planes/aircraft contains: Stargoose (no booster!), Tunny, Mom's Kitchen, Avenger II, Dragon II, Sea Sergeant, Commanchiro and an extra report on the Karyobin (what? the helicopters are getting short shrift!) VF-11 Thunderbolt: is the VF-11D Kai Jamming Bird Special Use craft. Complete with a data block. They appear to have missed the internal weapon bays in the nacelle packs... >.< Poaching Group Naval Vessels: most of the attention is payed to the mothership. But the fishing vessel and two other space going ships are featured. Noputi Baganis 5631: DYRL version of Buritai's ship. A sheet. Macross Frontier NUNS people: Catherine Glass, pilot, operator, Jun, crew, Maruyama and Soldier. B sheet. Hopefully Miss Glass will get more... Grace O'conner: special report on the 117th fleet and Ranshe Mei. Jamming Birds: looks like all of them on one sheet. Sadly, the personal info from the ?history? sheet isn't on this sheet. Timeline: end of M7. History: First Contact B sheet (Max in Zentraadi uniform in the ship, etc.) History: SWI: DYRL version. Looks like the entire movie is covered in the one sheet. World Guide Sheet: The Galactic Thought Connection Network Plan: groovy chart on the back that shows all thought being controlled by one person! And how it's done! Tech: EX-gear: how the gear becomes the cockpit seat (nice chart), EX gear system abilities, and the craft that can use it. Glossary: MII content: Sylvie Jiinaa. Super Parts (as all other sans MO are mentioned, I don't think this counts as unique MII content) Extra sheet: front M7, reverse Galaxy is Calling Me and M7D. Contents #38 5 mechanic sheets(!) Queadlunn-Rau (SDFM?) Super Valkyrie (SDFM?) Zentraadi Naval vessels (???) Macross Frontier Fleet Character sheets (3) Miria 639 Gor Bodolza and Subordinates (image is from DYRL) Natta Balgo / Gabigurago Timeline: Encounter with the Galactic Whales History: Defection of the Zentraadi Soldiers Worldguide: Protodevlin Technology: Variable Fighter Song Sheet: Planet Dance / My Soul For You Extra: production data Macross F
  22. It's 'cuz steak is a royally expensive, super rare treat in Japan. Sushi, in general, is very cheap (¥105 per 1, 2 or 4 pieces at a Kaiten Sushi restaurant). Of course, Edo-mae restaurants are the exception. Anyhow, average price of a steak... well, check out the price of a Kobe beef steak from here: http://www.econ.iastate.edu/classes/econ355/choi/jprice.htm So... no special meaning or Macross reference. (If it was a reference, it'd be an angel attacks just as their really expensive steak is served, and the 3rd impact happens at the end of the battle.)
  23. Different wavelength me guesses. I misread your "there's" for "that's". Anyhow, not sure if non-Japanese readers are getting the joke about the surname: 早乙女 (Saotome) which literally translates as "young girl; young female rice planter".
  24. Glad to have helped. For more images: http://images.google.co.jp/images?hl=ja&am...sa=N&tab=wi I wanted to post that link originally, but felt it'd be too confusing. What with half the people shown in black, and half not. But yeah, masters get shown, apprentices don't. It's a shame that I couldn't find any Boy Detective Conan images of blacked out mystery protagonists... ah well.
  25. POW Saotome is his surname. Aruto (Alto) is his first name.
