Prometheus - on Blu-Ray and DVD Oct. 9, 2012
sketchley replied to Pizza the Hutt's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think the prequel aspect was dropped with the "it's not an aliens movie but it's got the DNA of aliens" announcement. Another way to look at it is: a true prequel would be too creatively restrictive, and the fans would be too upset with the resultant changes and inconsistencies. -

I think I'll start considering this an alternate aliens universe. At least it's starting to become clearer why the "change" in the movies direction was so readily accepted by the studio executives. -
Scroll to the top for the results of the poll. The VF-0 is currently winning, but only by a hair.

Dolnie, not Dolniel. It's possible that it could be Dornie (not Dornier). As the r and l is interchangeable in Japanese, either option is valid; especially as a quasi-real fictitiously named company. Some other fun facts: English from Pg 154: Sukhoi / IAI / Do The fighter's name is romanized as Oryol in the magazine, but online dictionaries spit out Orlovskaya. So, if we go by the magazines romanization, both Dolnie and Dornie are invalid, and only Do is official.

Apologies, that should've been: "the bold in the following quote". Anyhow, I don't mind someone copying the relevant lines, just not the whole thing (one of the major reasons for the end user is that there's the possibility that I'll be revising and improving the translation at a later date. As it is, it hasn't been proof-read very well.. so there will be changes.) So, feel free to restore the lines that you had underlined in your original post. Mostly yes, and a litte no: the SV-51 lived on after the Birdman Incident as the SV-52, and that played a role, a super minor role, in SWI.
-
Please don't assume, as the translations I've done indicate that the only differences between the SV-51 and SV-52 are that the SV-52 has thermonuclear engines and their related sub-systems. I'm uncertain if the SV-51 has the ability to manoever in space, like the VF-0 has, but the SV-52 also has that ability. So, if it is a new ability, that's the only other change indicated. Nothing has been mentioned about changes to armaments and their locations, other than that the SV-52 used in the race has no weapons. And I didn't say that they were thrust reverses. A more technical description would be: the only location that the indicated thrust reverse system could be located, is in front of what becomes the "toes" in battroid, and as there are no moving parts indicated at the rear end of the engine nacelles, then it's logical to presume that the open port behind what becomes the knees in battroid at the fronts of the engine nacelles are part of that system; as in the reversed thrust is channeled along a tube on the top of the engine, inside the faring. These open ports lead directly into the open port which composes the rear of the blister that leads to what you've described as "gun ports". Ergo, they give the impression of funnels FOR the system that direct the flow of engine exhaust, but not the system itself. I'm glad that we're in agreement that this is a possibility.

Curious, what part of the bold in the following isn't understood? Thank you for the linking, but there's a reason why I'm not posting these translations verbatim in this website...

Some more of the translation of this month's article completed: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2678.msg41329#msg41329 It's unclear if the Anti-Unification Alliance only converted existing SV-51 to SV-52, or continued to produce them in number. Glad that there's a nuance that there were some SV-52 produced after the Unification War.

I'll grant you that in the fuzzy looking scans they look like guns. But in the magazine, there's a square block of plastic blocking the hole. Part of the model making process, sure, but it could imply that there's a grate or vent there. So, going back to the intake possibility - perhaps it's an intake for cooling, a la the intakes in the fronts of what become the shoulders of the VF-19? Also, it seems like an illogical position for guns, as in certain positions, it looks like they'd shoot up the trailing edges of the canards. Going by Tenjin's painting (as the model maker deviated somewhat), if the openings at the front of the engine nacelles are part of the thrust reverse system the SV-52y is equipped with, the "gun ports" give the impression of nozzles at the tips of funnels that focus the reversed thrust. Which still doesn't answer the question of why someone would move a gun that's not used on a race plane. I get removing the ammo and leaving things as is. But spending the time to move it seems a lot more trouble than it's worth.

The only problem with that is that the actual plans were lost with the rest of the surface of the planet during SWI. Of course, that doesn't mean that someone can try to make a copy, just that they'd have to reverse engineer from the surviving fighters. That said, the nuance of Macross the Ride is that the SV-51/52 is completely lost to history by the time the races start. So, it's going to be a rarity among the rare. From the impression I'm left with, there are more VF-3000 in existence, and that VF was only trial produced for testing purposes! The situation (lack of awareness of the SV-51/52) most likely changes a year later, when the in-universe movie version of the events of Macross Zero is produced and released. And it's a safe guess that a market for not-quite exact copies of the SV-/52 emerges.

Admittedly, and intake may be a bit of a stretch, but as other variable fighters have manoeuvring thrusters the same size and smaller, I wouldn't right that off just yet. Also, keep in mind that the SV-52 is really only an SV-51 with thermonuclear engines. Other modifications aren't indicated. Therefore, it doesn't make much sense for a vehicle that's being customized for racing to have the extra weight of unused gun emplacements added.

Sub-air intakes? Reverse thrusters? A port on a VF doesn't necessarily mean it's a gun or micro-missile launcher. Consider also that, along with all the other custom used VFs in the races in this novelization, it is unarmed.

The blurb around the gun pod indicates that it's a new gun pod design.

Finished the translation of the SV-52. Seriously underwhelmed. Nevertheless, some new info on it: basically it's an SV-51 that's been converted to thermonuclear engines. The Anti-Unification Alliance did it BEFORE the outbreak of Space War I specifically to do battle with Zentraadi. A small number of airframes survived the destruction of the Earth, and at least one of those surviving airframes is used in racing in the Macross Frontier Fleet in 2058 (or 2059). One of the key nuggets of information is that the SV-51/SV-52 airfame as plenty of extra internal space, allowing it to easily be upgraded with the latest technologies. Such as replacing the thermonuclear engines with the ones from the VF-17, and giving it performance on par with the VF-171! These revelations make the basic design a bit more impressive, IMHO. It's interesting that the writers mention that compared to the VF-1, the SV-51/52 is "twice as large" and heavier. I wonder how it compares to the variable craft such as the VF-19, VF-25, et al, which are all much larger than the VF-1.

Highly customized is right. Finished the translation of the SV-52 section and it's underwhelming when it comes to information on the SV-52 proper. Of course it goes without saying that it's full of a bunch of groovy info about Magdalena's customized race-use SV-52. That's probably the main problem with these books. They don't have enough battroid and GERWALK pictures, PERIOD. -
From what little is known about it, the design was taken by the Unified Forces and produced by them. From what I've read, it was for testing purposes. however, the latest Macross The Ride looks like it fleshes out it's history better. Also, take care about your terminology: Anti Unification Alliance (no such thing as the Anti-UN) SV-52 (No such thing as the Super SV-51)

I thought it was well known that the SV-52 had thermonuclear engines.

R.I.P. Wizard Magazine (1991-2011)

Fully agreed. Especially the feeling old part. I believe I started collecting it from a half year or year after launch. And stopped when their manga section (if they ever had one) became completely uninformative. -
Agreed. My sparing partner has now devolved to name calling despite not getting the drift that I've left the debate as he's essentially stammering away with his fingers in his ears about the veracity of sources. Anyhow, as Azrael said, back to the topic: which is better? Sv-51, 'cause it's the one that got converted into a thermonuclear powered craft pretty much as-is, and is still in use in 2059 (or whenever Macross the Ride takes place).

Yes, finally, stats on the long-mentioned, never detailed, SV-52. Should be noted that it's the SV-52γ (gamma), and it appears to be a custom of that, too (in short: piano-key shaped, feather-like outboard ailerons). There's new lineart of the underside and head sensor for this SV-52 variant. Not sure who penned it. Tenjin or Kawamori. Anyhow, stats for the SV-52 for the win.

Variable Fighter Master File VF-1 Valkyrie Space Wing
sketchley replied to Talos's topic in Movies and TV Series
Pg 088 has a larger hump on the back and stealthier panel lines (The VF-X). Pg 092 has a larger hump on the back, stealthier panel lines, VF-0 style nozzles/feet. Not sure what the big deal about the 3 hardpoints per wing is. VFMF:VF-1 pg 051 has 3 different hardpoint arrangements: earlier period mass-produced type with 2, late period mass-produced type with 3, and another late period mass-produced type with 5! -
Pray and god will answer. When you get around to reviewing Macross Chronicle, you'll find your answer. If god hasn't already answered. Hmmm... let's see, these things do whatever the writers decide they do in any particular scene...? Nope. Nothing overlooked. I humbly recommend that you try some creative writing yourself, so you'll get a firmer understanding of just how powerful writing can be.

If you liked the first two books, then it's worth it. If you can read or translate it, it's more than worth it.
