  1. LOL Seriously, I think the writing was on the wall, and we missed it. Both vol. 007 and 008 didn't have a next issue printing on <date> in the bottom corner of the last page. Probably 008 was going to be cancelled, but the publisher eventually relented and decided to rushed it out to capitalize on the release of the movie (and which would explain the lesser quality artwork in such things as Mechatronics and the YF-29 manga). The numbers probably did the magazine in. I don't pretend to know what counts as a successful print run for these kinds of publications, but the Japanese wiki page says that the 2009.01 issue had a print-run of 120,000. Sounds big, but when one compares it to the 2,790,000 print run of Weekly Shonen Jump, it pales quickly (admittedly the uber popular Shonen Jump is not the best publication to compare a niche Macross Ace to.)
  2. Don't forget that one could smear Vaseline on their glasses to get the nostalgic look. That said, I don't disagree with leaving things unchanged (Ie cleaning up the original, not adding new stuff). But there have been a few cases where in the process of restoring a film, the director has produced a new cut that is arguably superior. "Das Boot: The Director's Cut" and "Alien: The Director's Cut" come to mind. Of course, animated films don't have the luxury of cut film being edited back in - because those cut scenes rarely get animated in the first place!
  3. Ditto. Add it to the list: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRz6IP9k400
  4. Did some searching. The only good news is that it hasn't been indicated as having been cancelled (Eg: the Japanese wikipedia article). Does anyone know of any back-end (ie: industry distributor or wholesaler) ordering sites? The front-end stuff is, as Gubaba indicated, only listing the publication the day that it's at the printer or released in retailers...
  5. I'm in the process of writing up RPG game stats for the ADR-04-Mk XV S-Defender that appears in the 2011.07 issue, and... ... I just realized that it has the same designation as the MBR-04-Mk XV Goblin II; which appears in the old Macross Compendium's Mecha TOC: http://macross.anime.net/mecha/index.html Does anyone know where the Goblin II comes from? Nvm: comes from the Hobby Handbook. I guess that publication really has been cut from the official setting.
  6. ... and finished the "book review" on the page immediately preceding the MtR article. Surprisingly, both are, for the large part, different from the ad at the end of the MtR article, and further flesh out the content of the two tankoubon.

    Vf-5

... thanks for Google for locating this topic (MW's internal search feature is frightfully unuseful...). The VF-5 project continued: Ver.3 (current version): Ver.2 (VF-5 redux): brainstorming/transformation: Tenjin Hidetaka inspired illo that resulted in the rejection of Ver.2: Ver.1: Did we ever decide on a pet name for the VF-5? Aegir or Njord?
  8. ... and finished Vol. 07. I've also translated the add page for "Macross the Ride Visual Book Vol. 01" and "Macross the Ride Volume One" that immediately follows this months MtR. New pictures and expanded content. Double plus good.
  9. I think the reason was even more base: the owner-operators didn't want the site overloaded with reams of fanfic text.
  10. You could get out your knife and slice out the pages that you want to keep. Though, I agree, that even if the publications only a reprint of the magazine articles (I hope it's that, and more), it's more than worth it.
  11. Well... I never thought I'd use "redacted" in a translation, but there you go. Nor jingle, or spokes model, but the odds of the latter two were greater than redacted. Translations continue on the 2011.07 issue. "1 millionth branch store". Heh.
  12. Started translation: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2746.msg42308#msg42308 Not much so far. Basically the wing armaments outline and optional Super Parts Wing Booster Unit weapons. Not sure what is going on with that. Artistic license? My money is on the missiles surrounding both a missile-launcher feeding mechanism and an extra-propellant tank - one that isn't normally loaded for a standard sortie.
  13. To be fair, without knowing the development time of any of the projects mentioned, only the 2nd Transformers movies *really* counts - as it's the only one that's gone through the complete development cycle from an idea floating around the studio, to wide-release. Nevertheless, your main point still stands. "Real effort? What's this reality thing that you refer to?"
  14. The other option would be a game. Maybe not a high-end, graphics intensive (read: high development cost), but something that uses preexisting wire-frame models and a game engine. *cough* one of the PSP games *cough*
  15. Started translation of 2011.07 issue. http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/portal/translations.htm Only the opening paragraph, but already a stunning word: Lactence. You know, the (terrorist) group that takes over the Macross 13 at the end of VF-X2 MtR is teh sex! The opening page and art have references to SDFM, DYRL, M7, VF-X2 and MF. Kawamori-san, when is this getting animated?
  16. Sidestepping the worst... ever... debate. Agreed. With excellent movies like American Beauty and Road to Perdition under his belt, he's going to be bringing needed directorial skills to the project. Of course, writing is another matter all together. Good direction of bad writing only adds up to so much. Hopefully the writers will find inspiration in returning to the classic archetypal Bond villains and their evil plans of world domination.
  17. As long as it's not in the same mould as Quantum of Solace (worst... Bond... movie... ever!) Hopefully they'll return to the staples of Bond, and not continue drifting aimlessly in action-movie land.
  18. Not just that, but also a great chunk of money if and when another party (or Big West) purchases the rights back from them. Maybe it's akin to cyber-squatting.
  19. In some ways, Macross 7th Cord and Macross First Contact (in vol 008) are just that. M7C is in many ways a sequel with the appearance of a couple of the main M7 characters, and MFC takes place during SDFM, with Hikaru appearing. Both are focused on a completely unique set of characters, and both, IMHO, work perfectly fine. Sadly, they just don't have the big draw, like (and echoing Gubaba here) what Char's Deleted Affair, Ecole du Ciel, and the (somewhat later introduced) works by Masato Natsumoto (may not be one continuous story, but the art is some of the best for Gundam manga). Maybe it's true what Renato (if memory serves) said, that Macross Ace is run by people who aren't professionals. And (my opinion) haven't grown into professionals during the publications run so far.
  20. I like the Macross 7th Cord story. It's interesting (in the intriguing sense), and I can't quite guess where it's going. But I fully agree that it's not strong enough to be the flagship title of the publication. If the Macross Plus revision was taking the story in new directions and twists, it would have a fair chance, but it's not. Other than that...?
  21. The ads in the mag: MtR Serialization Upper Volume ...implying that there are going to be either 2 or 3 novels, in total. Meaning we're about 1/3 to 1/2 way finished the MtR serialization already?!! Collects episodes 1 to 6. release planned: 06.25 B6 size ¥1,260 384 pages MtR Visual Book Vol.1 Not 100% certain, but the images look like copy-pastes from the magazine articles. release planned: 06.25 A4 size ¥924 80 pages Encyclopedia Entries: Shinsei Industry Viggers Shinakasu Heavy Industry Nyannyan Dainamu Family Mart Tomahawk Phalanx Defender Spartan) Feature mecha: ADR-04-Mk.XC S-Defender Basically a Defender with 6 barrel Gatling Guns, and two UUM-7 micro missile pods bolted to the top and bottom of each arm. VF-19C/MG21 Excalibur Macross Galaxy craft.
  22. Ahh, yes. The more memorable of the two cameo-death scenes. What is it in DYRL? He's a creepy guy leaning over Minmei trying to get an autograph when a piece of concrete from the falling power-suit severs his head?
  23. The reading of the fine print is the important... The "official" official timeline: http://macross.anime.net/wiki/Category:Chronology Thank's Seto Kaiba for explaining the fine pint.
  24. Thanks. Saucisse has been making a lot of new entries in the Macross Compendium, and a few heretofore unknown locations were gleaned from it, and added to http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/Locations/Earth.htm (Namely the satellite cities: Henry Biggs, Brangogne, Miranda and Reds Woods).
  25. http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/Timeline.htm Wasn't intending to do it, but once the ball got rolling, I found myself scouring the Variable Fighter Master File books for times that certain events take place. All such entries are in steal-blue, from 2009 to the end. Green is official. Ignore the black, unless if you're curious where some RPGs set in the Macross universe have gone with the story. The story about Project Triangular is an interesting development, implying that the Frontier and Galaxy fleets were a lot closer (ideologically speaking) at one point. Though it may just have been something like "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" things at work. Wish there was a bit more to round out the 2060 to 2065 time frame other than spot translations of the VF paint jobs at the back of VGMF:VF-25. Ah well, maybe it'll be removed later? Nevertheless, "Macross One-Third"? First the quarter, now the third?!?!
