"Super Dimensional Seminar" begins airing
sketchley replied to SCOOPUDA!'s topic in Movies and TV Series
Hmmm... trying to grasp the logic behind that. Using the DYRL as the primary story (because it's the truncated version), and SDFM to fill in the gaps? Or just doing it for variety? Or trying to educate the new Macross fans (see, SK retold the same events with SDFM and DYRL, so MF TV and MF movie versions is par for the course)? -
The VF-2SS is a fairly straightforward kit, and shouldn't be that hard to assemble. Just take care of: - there's more excess molding flash on the parts than later kits - leg landing gear doors - take care when putting them in (for some reason I ended up putting one in backwards. In rectifying the problem, one of the axle pegs broke on it. Not a major problem... just frustrating because the instructions weren't 100% clear at that point) Post assembly is where it gets tricky - and why I suggest doing a dry fit before slapping on the glue. - shoulder joints: it's an ingenious design, but due to the construction of the actual shoulder joints, they have a tendency to pop apart when rotating the arms on the joint. Something about the parts being made from a softer plastic or something. - painting/washes: I did the panel lines with a fine point oil-based pen (aka Gundam marker), and there are a couple of spots where dis-assembling the section was the only way to remove excess ink to get the lines to look right (the stored wings and the backpack mounting plate is what's really coming to mind right now). Other than that, the (unpainted, unglued) kit came out quite nice, and the stickers were a nice change from the recent Bandai MF line ones. Nice, bold colours, not transparent, and no excess clear plastic around their border. My only complaints are the nose has a tendency to slide out in battroid, the head lasers pop out too easily, and the aforementioned shoulders (not exactly weak in permanently broken, just annoying that they have to be reassembled almost every time the arm is rotated on the joint).

Isn't one of the reasons behind making a superhero movie the built in name/brand recognition? Iron Man may have been B-list, but he was recognizable. Ant Man on the other hand, if I've heard or seen of him before, I've completely forgotten about him. Which would make him, what, F-list? (If Iron-Man is B).

Do we really need a movie about this... character? What Mark Millar said about "Kick-Ass" is very telling:

There's also the occasional katakana mixed in. If you're motivated enough, use: firefox with the http://perapera.wordpress.com/ plugin and an online translator (I've found http://honyaku.nifty.com/ ends up with much better results when translating to English).

The armoured cockpit (canopy) makes so much sense that it is indicated in a number of sources as a (major) technological development for VFs. Why still use the transparent canopy? Aside from having the ultimate fail safe, the cons of the additional power demands for the display, the supplemental cameras, the additional processor requirements to combine the camera images into a seamless display and the additional maintenance requirements aren't counterbalanced by the gains of the additional armoured canopy (which adds weight, too. But will consider that negligible for this thought experiment. So, too, for development costs). On the other hand, the transparent canopy also offers much more protection than current ones - OTEC and energy conversion armour. With the craft that did use armoured canopies, it appears that the main imagery was displayed in the pilot's mind (YF-21, (Y)VF-27). The exception being the Vahruta fighters. But they have some funky Protodeviln technology to compensate... or something. We also can't discount VF522's point: realism is a major selling point in VF designs, after all.

Q re Macross 7 Trash: Anyone know the names of (or if they were even named) the power suits that appeared in that manga? Specifically the version with the hand cannon?

DYRL BD Remaster - the Good.......and the BAD.
sketchley replied to SCOOPUDA!'s topic in Movies and TV Series
I can't with the ultraviolence angle. UNLESS if (big IF) the new school fans reacted negatively to the massacre, and their collective complaints about it have forced the issue? -
DYRL BD Remaster - the Good.......and the BAD.
sketchley replied to SCOOPUDA!'s topic in Movies and TV Series
Maybe they're self-editing as the new-school Macross fans (MF generation) don't want to see ultra-violence that the old-school Macross fans either don't mind, don't care or inversely, actually want to see? I better question to ask is: does the blurring of it change the story in a major way (i.e.: like the removal of the BGM at a key point)? Removing it has an impact on Miria's character arc and the overall perception of the Meltran, but the scene wasn't cut, right? -
Huh. Who'd have thought. At least it explains why the thing doesn't move.

Which begs the question - is it even going to appear on store shelves?

This Huh... didn't know this. I still don't like the designs, but I can appreciate the logic behind them. I don't think the dividing line is new = bad, old = good. From my perspective at least, it's old = looks like an armoured walking tank, new = doesn't look like an armoured walking tank. Now don't get me wrong, despite some interest in the title mecha, I can't say that I like the ED-209. The only fond memory I have is of it killing an executive. But that's more storytelling than anything else... right?

Indeed.

Nope. It has been described as variable from the onset. The unique thing about it is that what it transformed into wasn't publicly released for about 10 years.

Manga: Macross the First: Minmei's birthday party and Hikaru's grounded by Fokker for disobeying orders. It's a really, really interesting retelling of how Hikaru gives Minmei her birthday gift. Gosh darn it, Minmei is hot, hot, HOT in a China-dress. Kakizaki and Max have impeccable timing... poor Hikaru! Alas, MtF is taking a break next month, and will be back in NA Vol.13. Next issue (NA Vol.12) will see the return of "Macross FF".

Now you're contradicting yourself. To clarify: fighter mode design: finalized when FB2012 was made. HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED HENCE. GERWALK and battroid mode designs: rough design finished for DM:VF-X (yes. Rough design*. That's not a typo or mistranslation. See "MDM VF-X Flight Manual" pg 86 [first edition 1997.04.10]) But hey, if you want alternates or works in progress, check out Pg 69 of "SK Macross Design Works" for the SD type. * This opens up a can of worms... as the designs that Yamato is working off of to create battroid and GERWALK forms is, ultimately, a rough design.

"The Men Who Made Macross" Special Airs
sketchley replied to SCOOPUDA!'s topic in Movies and TV Series
You know... other sources have provided the same information over the years. Interviews in books like the This Is Animation and trade magazines come to mind. Internet searches and reading is fun! -
? How do we know that the person who made the scan didn't distort the vertical height (by mistake) when scanning? BTW, the fighter mode images were not revised in order to allow transformation. The image on the right is the one used in FB2012. Ref: "Best Hit Series SDFM FB2012 Graffiti", pg 55 [First edition 1987.10.15].

? How has the base lineart for the VF-4 been revised? Or are you talking about the VF-4 that appeared in SDFM (VF-X-4) vs. the one that appeared in FB2012? The lineart in question is clearly the later, which is what all subsequent images of the VF-4 is based on...

Hmmm... might be mixing it up with the VF-17 (same game) and Macross M3. Nevertheless, found some lineart that shows where the gun pod attaches: http://www.macross2.net/m3/flashback2012/vf-4/vf-4-la5.jpg (mounting point on innermost hardpoint right of central fuselage) That said, I'm also not expecting this to come with a gun pod or optional wing hardpoint armaments. They're saving those for supplemental releases to milk it for more ¥!

Oh, that's simple: Japanese vowels are pronounced individually or after following a consonant... and there's only 5 vowel phonemes to learn.
