  1. That sounds like the picture I'm thinking of. It was used as a poster in one of the TIA books and/or it's a postcard in the SDF Macross postcard set.
  2. Why not? Half the people here think the other half are crazy for liking M7.
  3. As a picture of Br*tai that's ludicrous. But it's not bad in a general cartoon superhero kinda way. Sort of Jack Kirby-esque.
  4. I don't remember seeing any Super 1A's in the series but I'm sure I haven't studied the images in quite the detail as Nanashi. If the 1A did show up in Super armor (I'm guessing in that big painted scene from the battle with Bodolza), I wouldn't be surprised if there are also 1D's in that config. Pure conjecture on my part though. I'm quite sure, however, that the VF-1J with Hikaru's red/white scheme never appeared in the series sporting Super armor. His last 1J was shot out from under him by Misa; when he came out of hospital he was immediately assigned Roy's old 1S. I doubt anyone else felt like painting their 1J in Hikaru's personal colors. (Note they are personal colors, not the Vermilion Team leader colors, since Hikaru had them before being assigned to Vermilion Team.) Also, AFAIK, the GBP armor only appears in the series in one episode, and that is when it is fitted on Hikaru's 1J. It also only appears in DYRL fitted on a 1J in Hikaru's TV colors. On the other hand, I think there was a bundle with the Takatoku 1S toy. Not sure if any models were made with GBP on other Valks. (There is a model kit of a 1D Super.)
  5. I enjoyed the episodes I watched but I lost track of the show sometime before it went off the air. The father looked kind of like Norman Schwarzkopf...at least I remember standing in line at the grocery store and seeing them on two different magazine covers...the resemblance was uncanny. Edit: NORMAN, not Arnold! Living in California, and watched The Terminator last night...so sue me.
  6. I have absolutely nothing against fansubbing, but this statement is incorrect as I understand copyright law. Of course, I'm not a lawyer, so I may be mistaken. However, my understanding is that any work created in a country which belongs to the Berne Convention (such as Japan and the US) enjoys copyright protection in all Berne countries. Whoever owns the copyright of M0 in Japan is already the copyright owner in the U.S. China is also a signatory of the Berne convention. Even if a work is fansubbed in a non-Berne country, importing and distributing the fansub in a Berne country would be a violation of that country's copyright laws. It's not a gray area in terms of the law. It is a grey area in terms of enforcement. Here are several web pages that specifically address the issue of fansubs and Berne: http://www.fansubs.net/fsw/general/faq1b.htm http://www.fansubs.info/fanfaq.php?view=legality http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encycloped...xicon.php?id=63 http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature.php?id=144 http://senseis.xmp.net/?Cookie3
  7. How could translation problems mess up the dub when they were perfectly (?) able to produce a translation for subtitling? Not that I really care...I always watch subs if available. (Exception--when I was watching the first disk of Evangelion, I decided it just wasn't worth the effort to read subtitles.) But it sure would be nice if the subs weren't hardcoded and the image transfer was better.
  8. I'll add a vote for the NOVA program on the JSF competition...although I clearly didn't retain as much as David (maybe because I only watched once, and without any prep?)... I don't remember them saying it was necessary to get away from the Harrier-style design--in fact I remember thinking that Lockheed was taking a gamble by using a wholly new design, and while I was watching I was expecting them to lose (yes, I was that much out of the loop) given the armed forces' stick-in-the-mud mentality. I do recall that the X-32 never really performed as needed--they had to leave a bunch of panels off and stuff to get it to fly right. Anyway, that's how I remember it--hopefully I'm not completely out in left field... Regarding the various successful multiservice jets--note that both the F-86 and F-4 started as single-service craft. If I'm not mistaken, the F-86 (FJ-1) was adapted for naval use basically because the purpose-built designs weren't very good. I have to wonder how easy it was to land on a carrier. The F-4 on the other hand was adapted for the AF because, even though existing AF jets were okay, the F-4 kicked ass. (Yes, I know it its troubles in the early part of the VN war--blame that on ROE, improper tactics, and bad missiles. The post-Top Gun Navy and the Israelis showed what the Phantom could do.) Did the A-7 also start as a single-service aircraft? And were there ever any successful interservice prop planes? I'm guessing the Zero and maybe some British fighters.
  9. Well, that is my point. They're beyond visual...except when rules of engagement require visual ID. And for many or most of the missions our jets are likely to face in the coming decades, there are probably going to be restrictive ROE that could bring them within visual range of opponents. (Aside from that, in reading other forums, I've been reminded that as stealth technology becomes more widespread, WVR combat becomes more likely.)
  10. I thought it was the low speed handling (maneuverability in dogfights). Which reflects an Air Force mindset that was probably wrong for the original mission (defending Europe against the Red Hordes), but which might be the right one for the kinds of conflicts the US is most likely to find itself in for the forseeable future. (Although, that's only relative to the -23. There are other options that might be better than either aircraft.)
  11. Well, considering some elements of Overtechnology break the laws of physics as we currently understand them, that's a definite maybe. But you do have to consider that objects will show up much more distinctly against a background of empty space (which happens to be extremely cold) than they will against the earth's atmosphere.
  12. You could send out a bunch of decoys. Mylar balloons, heated to the proper temperature, would do the trick as long as you're coasting and not actively maneuvering.
  13. Well, I was impressed by the way you knew all the other roles Mika Doi had done...didn't realize it was because you had a thing for her!
  14. I stand corrected.
  15. There's no need to get a Japanese player. A player which is either region free or which can change regions can be had for very little $$$. Many/most of them are cheap Chinese-made deals. I posted info on this in another thread not long ago, but it got locked because we were drifting off topic. I suppose laser disc is another option since it's not regionalized. But if you care about subtitles, you will indeed have to get a bootleg. OTOH, subtitles really aren't necessary for FB2012. Everything is either sung or its old dialogue. And there's at least one fansub script floating around on the net. Don't know about the other. Would depend on if it has a lot of talking.
  16. Neither of these has been legally released with English subtitling or dubbing. Also, neither has been released with any regionalization other than R2. If you need confirmation, see the MW main page for details of the various video releases. Also check out the production section of macross.anime.net. In short, all FB2012 and 20th Anniversary DVD's that have English subtitles are bootlegs.
  17. Piffle. And political, to boot.
  18. Eh, it's all just jawboning anyway. I think the point is (or should be) that Yamato is unlikely to produce all the scales listed. If they do, everyone's happy. If they don't, then the 1/48 fan's joy is the 1/60 fan's disaster, and vice-versa.
  19. Sorry. Listen to the mod, not to me. But I did point you to an answer to your question.
  20. I think I like the original TV suits better since they look more practical, but the DYRL suits have style. The FB 2012 suit might be the coolest of all but I'd have to see more of it to really make up my mind whether it would be good to use all the time. I think it would give the shows a more "hard SF" feel, which would be good.
  21. I think Mari Iijima is holding the album. Mika Doi (Misa) is to the right of her, and the guy who played Hikaru is to the left. The guy who played Britai has a beard and is behind Hikaru (since I don't know all the VA names, I'll freely substitute character names, apologies in advance). 2nd row, far left is the guy who played Bodolza. Having trouble remembering who's who otherwise. I think the guy at top right in the 2nd picture (dark red shirt/sweater) is Max. Keith will probably come by and rattle off all the names...
  22. That wouldn't be so bad...could be kind of Patlaborish (or, from what I know if it, Planetes-ish).
  23. See http://www.mahq.net/animation/macross/seven/macross7.htm If you want to solicit opininons and discussion about M7, you should either start a separate thread or use the search function to locate an existing "M7 good or bad?" thread. (There are at least a couple.)
  24. It's a bootleg. Suspicious signs are that it's got English, Japanese, and Chinese subtitles, and that it's Region 0. Confirmation is that it appears at Import-Anime.com as an MAC release (although the reviewer is a little confused about whether its originally their bootleg or if they copied another bootlegger): http://import-anime.com/index.php?page=view&item_id=1344 Edit: and at that price, it is absurd!
  25. Does the volume seem low only with iTunes, or also with Alert sounds, Quicktime movies, MIDI files, Speech, DVDs, etc?
