  1. I think it's an open question whether giant-sized Zentradi can get pregnant, let alone give birth. (Yes, it is implied in the TV show that Kamujin and Laplamiz may have "caused a few earthquakes" before going out in a blaze of glory, but that's just sex, not procreation.)
  2. Excellent points all, imode! Couldn't have said it better myself. About the Mig-15/F-86 issue, I met a retired pilot at an airshow at Travis AFB a few years ago, a guy who's in a wheelchair now but had flown F-86's in Korea, the SR-71, and probably Mustangs in WWII and everything in between. His comment on the Mig-15 was that it wasn't very durable. I liked how he put it: "They considered their aircraft expendable. Well, we expended some for them."
  3. The answer might be in the very lengthy text at the back of the Gold Book, or in notes in some other books. I have scan archive of some stuff here. Now all we need is a translator!
  4. Beautiful! I agree with all the other comments on the group shots and I especially like the shot of the Gerwalk cradling the gunpod and aiming upward.

    Yamato rumors

There are always a bunch of Canadian geese hanging around the college campus where my wife has her piano lessons. As one who has walked the fields nearby, I can assure you...geese are anything but constipated.
  6. On the whole I agree with your sociological theory. However, I have to say that religion hardly ever shows up in any mainstream entertainment, especially action movies, because it alienates a good portion of the audience--both the nonreligious and the ones whose religion doesn't get screen time (or, worse, gets shown in a negative light).
  7. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/wo...headlines-world I suppose you're right, David. But in that case, shouldn't we also be preparing for an attack by the bloody British?
  8. I think you mean Popeye, not Popy. Popy was a Japanese toy manufacturer way back when.
  9. Well, if you look at the Chronology we can get a few facts about global politics leading up to Space War One. There was a UN Space Agency in place when the alien space ship was detected on a collision course with Earth. Some factions wanted to destroy it before impact, using nuclear weapons. The entry of the ship into Earth atmosphere destroyed Moscow & Stockholm and caused damage across Europe and Canada. Afterwards, Afterwards, "In preparation for alien warfare, a plan is drafted to unify the countries of Earth and to establish an Earth United Nations Government." OTEC is formed shortly thereafter with joint "Japanese-American-Russian[soviet]-[West] German-English-French collaboration". Then in 2000, I'll skip over the rest and note that the Anti-UN seems to be striking all over the place and nukes St. Petersburg at one point. They seem more like a collection of terrorists (albeit very well-armed) or subnational factions than an international alliance. Also, at http://macross.anime.net/feedback/index.html we have Now, it could be that some of this was revised from an version with a more traditional 80's-type WWIII scenario, but I don't think so. I remember back when I saw Robotech in the 80's, they described the whole thing as a "Global Civil War". You can apply the usual caveats about the source; nevertheless, it seems the creators wanted to have a much more mixed up kind of conflict. And going forward to Zero, we can see at the beginning that Shin's traumatic memories come from some kind of civil strife rather than a typical battlefield.
  10. GodMedia: It's one thing to talk about the religious backgrounds of the characters in Macross. It's quite another to try to define Christianity, and what is "truly" Christian on an anime discussion board. Not to mention saying that "true Christians" must believe in "creationism". AgentONE: On the contrary, I think it's quite likely that the Anti-UN consists of all sorts of groups opposed to the world government. They could include religious fanatics as well as totalitarian dictators, and even neonazis and the like.

Yours looks the same. The problem with Albert's pencil is that it looks like her entire breast is "outside" of her arm, instead of pressed under it. The shading and the darkening of the lines in your version makes it stand out more. I think it can be fixed somewhat by removing part of the countour line like this:

    Yamato rumors

Sorry, I should have posted a link, but I was in a hurry: http://hobby.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/toy/1073477089/601-700 It's a BBS forum. What I copied and pasted was the entirety of one post. I prefer http://www.excite.co.jp/world/url to babelfish/altavista. Just be aware that wherever it says "Japan" it probably means "Yamato".

    Yamato rumors

got it from hobby.2ch.net's Macross discussion, post #694. I think someone is saying they talked to the Yamato rep at Wonder Festival, and was told there were no plans for a green Q-Rau, a 1/48 GBP-1S, or Max/Millia without armor. Also post #708 seems to cast doubt on a purple Q-Rau, but says a blue (Max) model is somewhat more likely. Don't know if that's just speculation or based on conversations with Yamato at WF.
  14. By the way, ANN hasn't been the most reliable reporter of developments in the Macross legal disputes. In fact, they often seem to be cribbing off of MW, and that could be what's happenening here. They may be looking at the same sources I was and (mis)translating as saying that there's been an appeal of the lineart copyright case to the Supreme Court. Let me see if I can get the attention of someone who actually knows Japanese...

Hey, Capt. Rico, don't sweat it! People are picking nits over the copyright issue, nobody has anything against you.
  16. Just finished watching Mospeada, and although I liked it, it doesn't inspire rabid fanboy collector's urges in me the way that Macross does. I'd snatch up a Legioss for $10, but I'd almost certainly pass at $20.
  17. Thanks, imode. For the sake of comparing machine translations, here's what I get from http://www.nifty.com/globalgate/
  18. I posted the same info the other day over in the pinned legal debates thread in the Other Anime forum. The only news here is that the lawsuit over the line art is also being appealed to the Supreme Court.

What Greyryder said. Only thing I would add is that registering copyright not only gives you a legal record (and presumption of ownership in case of disputes), but if I'm not mistaken it enables you to collect a greater penalty from infringers. Also, while you don't have to do anything to copyright your own original work, putting a notice on it at least provides evidence that it's yours. It's an interesting question what sort of standing someone would have if someone else copied their unauthorized fan art or fanfiction based on copyrighted works. My guess is it's somewhere between "almost none" and "absolutely none". Anyway, both pictures are pretty cool, but I don't like how Misa's left boob is drawn... Keep up the good work! I hope one day I'll have the skills and the cojones to put up something I've drawn.
  20. I'm 100% sure that there's no plutonium on any watch dials. The Indiglo watches I have only light up when you press a button, by the way. So it's not radiactivity. I just found online info that it's a kind of phosphor. Radium was formerly used on watches, with disastrous results for the people who painted them by hand. Tritium is still used, apparently. I had a tritium dial watch once. It's radioactive, but not significantly dangerous to biological tissue. At least at one time, it was possible to purchase bottles of radium paint to repair watch dials whose paint had flaked off. I have heard a story about a guy who collected old watches, scraped off the radium paint, and also gathered as much of the paint bottles as he could find, so that he could do home experiments. His experiments supposedly ended when the authorities detected an unusually large radiation source in his neighborhood and came knocking. Info on luminous watch dials Here's the story of the amateur scientist. I may have gotten some details wrong. Appears to be true. Apparently plutonium is deadly both because of the radiation and because it's chemically toxic, like lead. But both dangers may be exaggerated depending on whether Pu is in a pure state or in a compound like plutonium oxide. At least, that's what this page says. Other sites agree, while still others say it's nuclear industry propaganda...
  21. I think it's a great idea.
  22. Exactly. I think I've reported that guy at least once because he's breaking eBay rules against excessive S&H. It's basically a way of getting around eBay fees, but it has the annoying effect of also drawing attention via the "cheap" price, and it could result in some poor sap hitting the BIN button before they see the shipping price.
  23. Yes, they bombarded Earth after SDF-1 folded. Azrael, can you expand on that or cite a source? The question is--when in the DYRL timeframe was the Earth laid waste, and did Breetai do it or somebody else? I was under the impression that there really weren't any answers to those questions.
  24. Right, sort of an amphitheatre. Remember, Hikaru was able to look down on it after parking his bike outside. And I think there was at least one other enclosed concert hall/TV studio.
  25. Okay, Big-O was unpopular in Japan and popular in the US. So it was worth finishing for the US market. Southern Cross was unpopular in Japan and unpopular in the US. So you can argue there were problems with the US treatment, but when all is said and done, it's 0-2. I wish it were otherwise, because as I wrote above, I really do like Southern Cross.
