Dang, beat me to the punch. Yeah, the names are an important bit. That's the thing with Gaiman; he goes really deep into the obscure details of mythologies and takes it all more or less literally. Mr. Wednesday's name is a big clue as to who he really is. Wednesday. Woden's Day. Odin's Day. Thus why he says "What day is today? [Wednesday.] Well, then I guess it's my day." If you've ever studied any of the Romance languages, you've no doubt had to deal with some of the differences between their days of the week and the English ones (rooted in native Germanic languages): French - lundi (day of the moon (la luna)) - mardi (day of Mars) - mercredi (day of Mercury) - jeudi (day of Jupiter) - vendredi (day of Venus) - samedi (day of the Sabbath) - dimanche (day of the Lord) English - Monday (Moon's day) - Tuesday (Tyr's day) - Wednesday (Odin's day) - Thursday (Thor's day) - Friday (Frigg's day) - Saturday (Saturn's day) - Sunday (Sun day) Gaiman stories don't just use the "popular" modern treatment of a character. They'll go deep into the lore and try to suss out what that character actually is. It's a far cry from the sort of sterile depictions of Greek gods that you see in cinema nowadays, like in Clash of the Titans or the Disney Hercules, where the mythology is sanitized and manipulated to be more "Christian." (Zeus and Hera being loving parents of Hercules, for instance, instead of a horndog and a spiteful vengeful bitch, respectively.) Which is part of the reason why I can't wholeheartedly recommend it. If you know a bit about mythology and have even a slight understanding of how screwed up it usually is, you'll probably enjoy this story better. If you're used to mythology being more of a simplistic, idyllic good versus evil thing a la God and the Devil, then you probably won't like it as much.

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!

In the forest castle. (Going off of memory here, so I may be wrong:) From the transport station, go to the right, then down one floor to the walkway with the large box on it. Just pull it out the way a little bit and you can squeeze into the special weapons smith.- 6945 replies

Oh? What, where, and how might I do the same if I were so inclined? I'd imagine it consists of 2x delta wings, 2x larger canards, and maybe an alternate weapons pack? Probably less than 20 parts total?

Oh, Nier Automata is a great game, no doubt. I talked about it a couple pages back with others as well. I hope you're going for the five (six?) main endings. I'd been lacking a good story-driven game like that, so it was a lot of fun. A bit overdramatic at times, but that's kind of par for the course with Japanese drama, amirite? The side stories are my favorite part. The one with the two people trying to escape, especially... Oooh...- 6945 replies

Well, like other Starz/HBO shows, there's full-frontal nudity that borders on softcore porn depending on your tastes. This is one story where I feel like the graphical depictions of sex is more thematically appropriate than other shows, but all the same, it throws you for a loop when it happens. One criticism I've developed with this show is that they can't ever seem to just turn off the music. Everything has to have something playing in the background, and it's annoying as hell. Besides those two gripes, though, it's an enjoyable story. It's a WEIRD story, though, so... I dunno. I can't heartily recommend it, because you have to really like that Neil Gaiman-y type of fantasy, and I don't think that describes much of the American TV-watching audience. It's definitely something you have to make up your own opinion about.

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!

Getting through Bayonetta, and... ho hum. I can see the clear DMC influences (the originals, not DMC: DMC), both in gameplay and design. And it elicits a lot of the same reactions as DMC does, both good and bad. I hate the guns. I never got used to them in DMC, and I still can't get used to them here. They follow the same trend as Ninja Gaiden's default shuriken - rapid-fire, super low-damage projectiles that don't have much practical use. It doesn't help that they're mapped to Square in a two-button melee system. I'm used to Square = Light Melee, Triangle = Heavy/Alternate Melee, Circle = Skill/Etc., X = Jump. Having my main melee button shoot instead takes getting used to, and even eight hours into the game I sometimes end up breaking combo. The Ninja Gaiden games (1 and 2, at least, haven't played 3 and don't ever plan to) at least have the projectile button mapped to Circle. The lock-on is super annoying, too. On top of having to hold R1 to lock on, the game also consistently just ups and changes your lock-on target. Given how hectic the game is and how visually cluttered it is, I sometimes won't even know I've switched targets before it's too late. Both of these issues were greatly improved upon in subsequent Platinum games. I'd like to pick up Bayo 2 whenever I can (hopefully for Switch?), because those and some other issues aside, I do like the underlying combat. The timing for dodges and counters, i-frames, etc. is much more strict than in MGR, and I love a game with such meticulous combat systems even if I've never been all that good at these games. And hopefully Platinum implemented some of their improvements in that game, even though I know it was basically just a matter of dusting it off and ironing out a few kinks for the Wii U release. As it is, I'm still on the fence about doing anything more than just beating the campaign, but we'll see. It's a good time overall.- 6945 replies

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always got the feeling that the -27 wasn't all that popular. It got overshadowed by the -25 and later on the -29, and didn't really seem to develop an identity, a personality, of its own. Compare that to the Draken and the SV-51, both of which make a serious impression as enemy mecha in their respective shows. Then again, that could just be my personal biases showing through. I didn't think the -27 was all that impressive. :/

New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
kajnrig replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
...not to be That Guy again, but isn't that basically what Macross Zero was? Unless you're talking Pre-pre-Space War 1, in which case all they'd be using are fighters, maybe rudimentary walking tanks, and... like at the very end maybe, the first "transforming" machine, a T-1 or some other trainer that can switch to a "Gerwalk"ish VTOL mode with manipulator arms stored in underwing pylons that fold up for aerodynamics. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd be pretty down with that. What are these Packs of which thou speakest? EDIT: Also congrats on 6,666 posts. O_O spooooky -

Ah, true enough. Certainly the knife fight could only improve with the addition of some modern sensibilities. -
Why, was there a prototype VF-27 showed off at one point or another?

I don't care about idols, but then I don't care about war, either, and I'm willing to sit and listen to good war stories. So... As for an updated SDFM, isn't that exactly what Macross the First is? -
I'd be totally fine with a fixed-pose Battroid. It's simple enough to add joints if you really want to. A poseable Battroid would definitely shoot up the cost significantly. That said, I'm slightly disappointed (but relieved?) that no third tripod emerged.

I don't know if it's "meant" to be any way in particular. The rotating section changes all the time from company to company. The Hasegawa kit mimics this one, whereas the Bandai one puts the rotation around the knee area. Personally, I've always preferred it rotating closer to the "hips" a la the Hasegawa/this. It seems more realistic, and imitates life more closely. If there's any disappointment it's that there doesn't seem to be any "cover" for that area (like rubber mesh or so), and the "rotating joint" is just a block with one corner protruding past the leg armor.

Even being fixed-pose, that Gerwalk must have a whole lot of screws/pins/rods strengthening it.

That's pretty darn impressive for a first go around. Have you done any similar projects since? I always love seeing what people come up with to handle the wiring and power sourcing and such.

It didn't last a very long while. I received mine early last week (I had bought them when they went back up for backorder on HLJ). It looks like HLJ went through their entire stock of reissues already. You can try emailing them and asking if/when they can get their hands on another batch.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, in theaters May 5, 2017
kajnrig replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I had a good time with it, same as the first. Got really dumb-cheese at the end, but forgivably so. You can dust it off your shoulders because the rest of the movie - like the music, the editing, the humor, so on - is well-done. Contrast that against a certain other movie, which also gets dumb-cheese at the end but doesn't do any of the rest nearly as well... Loved the entire drawn-out sequence of finding tape at the end. It's like the Simpsons rake scene played out over two and a half minutes.- 115 replies

HLJ's video of the various sci-fi booths, starting with Bandai and Gundam: Me, I'm more interested in the Aoshima re-releases of their 1/48 M9 and Arbalest kits, with a 1/48 Laevatein coming soon as well. HYYYYPE! While we're on the subject, here's HLJ's video of scale model kits as well:
