I haven't seen this movie yet, but this video sure makes me want to now. I was tempted to just spam this video across all the DC movie threads and the GitS thread, but hurray self-control. (Also necropost.)

Saw this on another forum: http://gundameclipse.net/topic/8103770/1/ Dig the mods, and the color scheme made me think of Alto's -29 from the Frontier movie. Really like what they did. Only shame is that it no longer looks like a transforming design (and indeed it wouldn't be able to do so, even if the guy hadn't glued it into place).

I literally was not aware of this. Thank you for the PSA, this now clears up SO MUCH for me.

1.) Yeah, but not nearly to the same degree as the VF-31. Leading edge-wise, it's nearly a 1.5:1 RSW-to-FSW ratio (eyeballing it). Others (also eyeballing) are anywhere between 0:1 and 0.5:1. If that even makes any sense. What am I even on about... 2.) The first time I saw the switchblade mechanism I nearly crashed the plane out of spite. "No! NO! You do NOT get to do that! BAD fictional airplane! BAD!" 2a.) I like to headcanon that the -19's alternate wing configuration is a low-profile storage mode for aircraft carriers and that's it. It's just super super dumb any other way. About the only way they could believably work in battle is if parts of them fold in/on top of/accordion themselves, and that's just... asldk;fja;slkdjf;aslkjfa;slkdjf

I thought about doing that, too, but got lazy. You're also spot on about being "used to a certain silhouette." Real-life FSW aircraft run the gamut in design, but we've never seen a compound delta wing design that terminates in a FSW tip. (At least I haven't.) We don't have any "proof," so to speak, that such a design would fly. The -31A looks more flight-worthy than the -31J/S/etc. simply because its delta wing terminates in more delta wing, and we see that type of design fly all the time. And in Macross the only FSW designs up until the -31 have had fairly large wings. It bears mentioning though that from different angles, especially ones that emphasize the slight downward tilt of the wings, I think the design looks just fine. Great, in fact. It's such an odd thing, I can't quite put my finger on it. The position/existence of the canards? The link seti888 just shared removes them, and I think it looks great. I used to think the X-02 Wyvern from Ace Combat looks similarly funky, but it's grown on me, too, especially with its unique almost-zero vertical surfaces supersonic mode. I dunno. I'm so confused.

Alien: Covenant (formerly known as Prometheus 2)
kajnrig replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Saw it on a whim earlier today. I don't really care about the Alien franchise; the only one I've seen was Alien, and that about a year ago or so. I thought it was fine, and I can see why it became a hit, but I wasn't struck by it as maybe I would have been ten, twenty years ago. So going into this, I wasn't looking for a good horror/sci-fi/action movie so much as just a good movie. I was completely okay with it, could chalk this and that up to suspension of disbelief, until- 352 replies

I don't know how accurate this is - I sourced the top-down views from various pics. The VF-31 comes from the Bandai model kit instruction manual, the -19 and -29 from anymoon.com (Thanks much! ). I tried to scale them based on the cockpits, but this is still a very very rough comparison. Still, as far as general silhouettes are concerned, I think this does a decent enough job depicting the problems I have with the -31. The wings are way longer on the -29 and -19 than the -31; and the -29's wing roots are located closer to the midline than the -31's. The tailfins on both are positioned closer to the legs. The modded -31 is much less wide than the -19 and -29, but better maintains their appealing size ratio of wing to midsection.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0

I dunno about them, but I saw my brother watching it on Netflix. (I think.) -
Personally, I don't like that the 31's main body is so wide and the FSW so small. Compare it to the YF-19 and even the YF-29, where the wings sit closer to the centerline and represent much more of the plane's total width. The tail fins likewise sitting so far out from the center of the plane bothers me. I'm not sure where the wing "roots" would be considered on this design since it's sort of a blended wing design, but for my money, moving the entire section where the tailfins sit and the FSW begins in just a bit would do a lot to mitigate my problems with the design. Like so: I would still shave off bits from the area just forward of the wings to further "slim" it down, but otherwise I have less of a problem with this than the original.

The latest episode is probably the most "grounded" of them so far. It's definitely the easiest for a general audience to take in. Enjoyed it as much as some other episodes, more than others, and all in all had a good time with it. The actor who plays Anubis (or maybe some other god of death, or maybe Death itself, I remember being a bit hazy on that in the books as well) is excellent. I'd love for Sandman's Death to make a cameo sometime. She's just my absolute favorite depiction of Death ever.

New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
kajnrig replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
1.) Oh, okay. From what was said right beforehand, I thought you might have meant that M+ treated some of the lore differently from the rest of the show, or maybe it pulled off generational storytelling differently than its predecessors/descendants, or something. I was just confused and needed clarification is all. 2.) Watching the movie version again, the scene of Marje buying the chip happens during the concert (specifically when Myung by way of Sharon kisses Isamu), and the implication I got was that this exchange happened either sometime beforehand or almost immediately after the concert. The fire breaking out happens later that night, so... if the chip was installed beforehand, then Sharon acted on the feelings she experienced in Myung during the concert. If the chip was installed afterward, then the timing gets a bit more handwavey, but in general I think Sharon does much the same thing: takes the things she learned from Myung and puts them into practice. 3.) Ah, okay, I see where you're going with this now. It's a neat theory, and it certainly can't be worse than the half-baked characterization we got (of everybody) in Delta. Personally, I wanted Mikumo to be a sort of "powerhouse" singer who knew how to belt out lyrics but couldn't project emotion into them (contrasting to, say, Kaname, who I think they were trending toward being a softer singer with wider emotional range). As for Lady M... I'm sort of meh on that whole mystery. It'd be cool if she were Minmei, or Myung, or anyone else people have posited, or even a new character altogether. /shrug -

kajnrig replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
1.) Differences to what? The OVA? 2.) I always thought the case was that she was constrained to and could only maintain herself as she is inside her original black box shell because of the neurochip. Even if she were to copy herself wholesale onto a different server, she required that neurochip specifically to be able to be what she is. 3.) Does Mikumo mirror Sharon? I don't remember much of Delta, but I thought Sharon was a form of "simple" light-sound hypnotism whereas Mikumo/Basara/Ranka/etc. affected fold space or some such thing. -
I'm waiting for the cold open that's just the ending scene of Life.

Saw Millennium Actress again for the umpteenth time. Still such a good movie. Never fails to bring me to my knees. -
Well, the 31A certainly looks more like the 31's immediate predecessor, the YF-30 Chronos. The forward-swept wings were likely chosen simply to give the VF-31 a "W" silhouette to match up with Walkure. The 31A is the "regular" look, so I think it'd be fair to say that even in universe, your feeling that the forward-swept wings are an afterthought are more or less on the ball.

Dang, beat me to the punch. Yeah, the names are an important bit. That's the thing with Gaiman; he goes really deep into the obscure details of mythologies and takes it all more or less literally. Mr. Wednesday's name is a big clue as to who he really is. Wednesday. Woden's Day. Odin's Day. Thus why he says "What day is today? [Wednesday.] Well, then I guess it's my day." If you've ever studied any of the Romance languages, you've no doubt had to deal with some of the differences between their days of the week and the English ones (rooted in native Germanic languages): French - lundi (day of the moon (la luna)) - mardi (day of Mars) - mercredi (day of Mercury) - jeudi (day of Jupiter) - vendredi (day of Venus) - samedi (day of the Sabbath) - dimanche (day of the Lord) English - Monday (Moon's day) - Tuesday (Tyr's day) - Wednesday (Odin's day) - Thursday (Thor's day) - Friday (Frigg's day) - Saturday (Saturn's day) - Sunday (Sun day) Gaiman stories don't just use the "popular" modern treatment of a character. They'll go deep into the lore and try to suss out what that character actually is. It's a far cry from the sort of sterile depictions of Greek gods that you see in cinema nowadays, like in Clash of the Titans or the Disney Hercules, where the mythology is sanitized and manipulated to be more "Christian." (Zeus and Hera being loving parents of Hercules, for instance, instead of a horndog and a spiteful vengeful bitch, respectively.) Which is part of the reason why I can't wholeheartedly recommend it. If you know a bit about mythology and have even a slight understanding of how screwed up it usually is, you'll probably enjoy this story better. If you're used to mythology being more of a simplistic, idyllic good versus evil thing a la God and the Devil, then you probably won't like it as much.

In the forest castle. (Going off of memory here, so I may be wrong:) From the transport station, go to the right, then down one floor to the walkway with the large box on it. Just pull it out the way a little bit and you can squeeze into the special weapons smith.- 6885 replies

Oh? What, where, and how might I do the same if I were so inclined? I'd imagine it consists of 2x delta wings, 2x larger canards, and maybe an alternate weapons pack? Probably less than 20 parts total?

Oh, Nier Automata is a great game, no doubt. I talked about it a couple pages back with others as well. I hope you're going for the five (six?) main endings. I'd been lacking a good story-driven game like that, so it was a lot of fun. A bit overdramatic at times, but that's kind of par for the course with Japanese drama, amirite? The side stories are my favorite part. The one with the two people trying to escape, especially... Oooh...- 6885 replies

What scale are these?

Well, like other Starz/HBO shows, there's full-frontal nudity that borders on softcore porn depending on your tastes. This is one story where I feel like the graphical depictions of sex is more thematically appropriate than other shows, but all the same, it throws you for a loop when it happens. One criticism I've developed with this show is that they can't ever seem to just turn off the music. Everything has to have something playing in the background, and it's annoying as hell. Besides those two gripes, though, it's an enjoyable story. It's a WEIRD story, though, so... I dunno. I can't heartily recommend it, because you have to really like that Neil Gaiman-y type of fantasy, and I don't think that describes much of the American TV-watching audience. It's definitely something you have to make up your own opinion about.
