Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time II: The Quickening
Scyla replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I nominate Star Wars Episode 7. The whole pot with the Starkiller Base doesn't make any sense, the fact that Rei was conveniently left behind on Jakku is mind-boggling and in a world where everyone tells everyone their secret mission after the just met is crazy. Also what was Phasma thinking when she disabled the shields of the base??? The only possible outcome would be that the rebels (I call them that because they are the same rebels from Episode 4) attack the base and trying to destory them. She should have been a trooper and get herself killed as a sacrifice for the greater good of the First Order and nothing would have happened. Worst movie ever -1/10.- 854 replies

I think the Starkiller Base was in a different system cause the X-Wing squadrons jumped through hyperspace to get to it. The fact that the rebels could see the beams that destroyed the Senatorial planets from their planet led me to believe that they are all in the same system otherwise they shouldn't be able to see the beams. The whole timeline is still totally nonsensical since I assume the plasma from the sun can travel at topmost with lightspeed. So it would took it at least several years to get to the planets if the Starkiller Base was still in the same system when X-Wing attacked. The reason why I believe this are twofold. First the X-Wing squadrons jumped through hyperspace thus it needs to be at least a few light years away. Second on the rebel base is still sunlight after the Starkiller Base exploded so I don't think they used the sun in that system. It just doesn't make any sense even no matter how you look at it.Not only seems this weapon far inferior to a Deathstar design it is also impractical as hell. 0/10 worst movie ever!

Ah I now I understand what you hinting at. I misread your first reply. Of course, if the Base was build into an actual planet with no meanings of movement through space, it could only absorb the sun of the system where the planet is located. Once the sun is depleted no more shots can be fired. This is something that never came to mind because I always had the image in my head that this is a movable object because otherwise it doesn't make much sense. Maybe the First Order had found a way to convert any given planet into a Star Killer base quickly (since they had to build only the gun part) and thus it doesn't really matter if the sun is depleted because you can "easily" build another one in a new system. Of course this idea is also deeply flawed because the whole system would collapse once you remove a not insignificant part of a suns mass. I.e. after the it destroyed the Senat the system would have been unstable and the planet wouldn't be anywhere near enough to the sun to draw its mass) but I could see that working. [edit:]I didn't catch what you meant at first because during my first viewing I though that the Starkiller Base was built around a sun using parts of a planet. So in order to recharge they had to move to another sun and but it inside the base. Only in my second viewing I saw that the base is drawing energy from the sun before firing. No matter how the movie people thought it should work the whole idea is deeply flawed so I guess any explanation is as good as the next.

I thought that at first but during my second viewing I noticed that it was bright day when the Millenium Falcon arrived on the base. When they ready the weapon a beam goes from the sun to the base and Han says something like: "When it gets dark the weapon is ready to fire". During their infiltration of the base it gets gradually darker and as soon as the rebel base announces that the weapon is ready to fire in a short period of time you can see that the surge of the sun into the base is fading away.

Macross Δ (Delta) - NYE Special Talkback - READ 1st POST
Scyla replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
You should watch it a couple of times more. I feel that it is a bit too cluttered with different story bits but if you watch it several times this goes away and you can concentrate more on the core of the story in this episode. The Speaker Podcast also mentioned that Kawamori said the tone of the first few episodes be vastly different in tone. Not sure what to take from that since I liked the tone of the preview episode but we will see. -
From the movie I got the impression that the Starkiller Base moves itself next to the sun, sucks it into its core (that's the reason it got dark outside while Han was on the base) and than transforms the sun into a beam that can magically spread into different sub beams that destroy planets. So you can recharge the base whenever you want. There are some ludicrous consequences to that like how does the planes of the system behave once their center of gravity is gone (oh well maybe the flat-earthers are right and there is no gravity!) or how does the base get near enough to the sun without disintegrating itself. I get that there are shields but have you made it into an ice planet? Couldn't it be a volcanic world?

I got my Riobot Anubis in and man is he tiny. Awesome but tiny. I hope Sentinel does more of them. Compared to the Jehuty (that I got on discount) he is a bit light on accessories but given his appearance in the game he doesn't need more. -
I've opened mine up today for a QC check. Didn't notice anything missing and the hips joints albeit super hard to manipulate didn't got detached from the legs. The missing U.N.SPACY printings on the fast packs and the legs are still a crying shame. I noticed that the inside of the landing gear doors are not painted white. I guess you can make the argument that the plane is already white and it wouldn't gained anything from it painting them but then again the color of the landing gear is so a different shade of white so it is a bit off putting. I got not the best lighting during my inspection (which probably rendered it useless ) So I have to look at it again under better lighting conditions.... ...now that I'm talking about it I recognize that I don't know if the inside of the landing gear doors on my VF-0D/A are painted.... shows how much I look at them. To be fair they are in their boxes at the moment waiting for the Frontier Valkyries going into storage. [edit:] My main gripe with the toys is more psychological. For that money I want the ultimate representation of the design but with the missing paint markings I always got the nagging feeling in my head that some better version will come around and I have to buy them again. That is something I can more easily stomach when it comes to $150 toys but for $300 it is hard to take.

The reason why Sith Lightsabers are usually red is that they use artificially created crystals because they result in a stronger blade those crystals are red. Jedi use natural found crystals that came in a great variety of colors. According to Wookipedia the idea was that the evil characters use red blades ad the good ones blue. In RotJ they changed the color of Lukes saber from blue to green so that the viewers can make it out more easily against the blue sky of Tatooine. KotoR used the Lightsaber color as a way to distinguish between the classes of the game so Jedi Guardians use blue Lightsabers, Jedi Consulars use green ones and the blades of Jedi Sentinels are yellow. The purple color of Mace Windus Lightsaber is that color due to the fact that Samuel L. Jackson requested a special colored blade to stand out next to the other Jedis on screen and purple is his favorite color.

Drum sets? Just kidding. What I really like to have is a knife sheath on the forearm armor and some other gimmick in the next one. Maybe there is enough room for a transformable trumpet? I mean someone has to provide the trumpets from Ikenai Borderline right? Maybe it could have a transformable shield that folds out of the forearm armor to provide more protection. Since I really liked the shields on the VF-25 Valkyries it would be nice to have something similar on the VF-31. They could paint an image of the idol onto it to make it more flashy right?

I think that sounds awesome. I was listening to the Speaker Podcast about the Kawamori exhibit and they talked about how the VF-19 Kai had a guitar in one of the earlier concepts. I would be all for a VF-31 container that could transform into an electric guitar. It doesn't has to be in the show. Could be a funny web shop exclusive.

If they delay it for another 6 months maybe we will get a good looking VF-2SS. At the moment I'm keeping my preorder for the novelty of it. If this is the only PT VF-2SS ever produced in 1/60 scale I want to own one with and without the SAP. Every time I look at pictures of Fighter-Mode I have second thoughts though.

As I said. Gamlin is such a pushover when it comes to Milia that she could easily persuade him to adapt the Jenius surname. Quick question for someone who has far more knowledge of Macross than I do. Was there ever a Jenius boy born other than Max himself? -

I wonder if we will see a MP Strike Freedom with the wings of light bundle as a web shop exclusive soon. I passed on it when some units where available after release at BBTS due to funds (and I don't really need them) but a bundle would tempt me especially with the Destiny announced.- 6025 replies

I agree with your views on the MP side. They are not really that good when it comes to collectible transforming robots. I collect them because of nostalgia because the look like the images I had in my mind when I was a kid but they have many shortcomings. I can post my page long rant about MP Star Saber here if you want to. They are lacking in articulation, engineering, fit and finish, used material, qc, details, transformation and design. I think MMCs Sphinx is way better in all these points. Is he perfect? No but he sure has a more collectible feel than the ones from Takara. The next official bot after Sphinx would probably be MP Bumble or Streak but they have both issues. On other news. I love the Takara Blast Off. It is a brand new mold with the correct head. UW Bruticus will be the only official combiner I will own.- 17165 replies

Trade negotiations! What I like about the prequels is the world building. I think it was neat how they tried to get to a point in 3 where you could believe that the SW galaxy will look in the OT 20 years later. Of course they didn't succeed all the way but they tried. It was good to see the Jedi in battle. From the OT you could never believe that Jedi or Sith would be a menacing force the way Obi Wan and Darth Vader fought in 4. It got better in the next two movies though. I also liked the pod racing sure it was superfluous but still fun and visual stunning at the time, at least for me. And don't forget the best part: Mace Windus purple Lightsaber.

Watched it a third time on YT and it really gets better with each viewing. I'm not sure if the shift in tone that Kawamori announced for the next episode will bode well with me. I like the tone of the preview episode and don't want Macross become the Breaking Bad/Walking Dead/GoT of anime. -
I see where your coming from and I could agree with that if it weren't for the likable characters. Finn, Rei, Poe are all good characters that have a chemistry on screen. Even with Kylo Ren I can understand whats his deal is and can sympathize with him. Something I could never to with Anakin Skywalker in the prequels.

I disagree and agree with you on that. It takes the tone from the OT but takes the most story elements from 4.

I don't think it is a remake but the story structure is basically the same which leads to a "been there done that" feel that is not beneficial to an otherwise great movie. Why build another Deathstar if the first two didn't work out? Why start out on a desert planet, why does Rei don't know who her parents are.... I think the reason why this is is twofold. First JJ Abrams stated that his favorite movie is Episode 4 so naturally there are some similarities here. The second one is that Disney created a carefully tinkered experience trying to make Episode 1-3 go away so they fell back to the original trilogy. As I stated before I wanted to knew more about the Star Wars universe and of course there are elements in it but they are not explained very well. So since I don't know where the First Order came from I assume they are similar to the Empire. I don't know why Kylo Ren is the way he is so I assume he is some iteration of Darth Vader. I don't know who the Resistance is so they must be the rebels from the original trilogy. That is why I said the movie is a good start. If they elaborate on these elements and they don't make Episode 8 the Empire Strikes Back I think I will see Episode 7 differently than I do now where I can only compare it to Episode 1-6. From the perspective today I would say it is too similar to Episode 4.
