  1. Thanks for this. Quite a few gems there like the rib on Sheryl being sorta dead at one point, the indecisiveness of some characters and the idea the Sheryl would snap on a desolate Earth. Got a kick out of those.
  2. Nice to see that the face doesn't look as horribly flat on that Noriko as they did on the prototypes. Shame I've never seen any attempt at an episode 6 look though (different sweater, longer hair). Not bad costumes for cheap porn. XD I was looking at some BD screencaps and noticed something interesting. Seems that even though I've watched the sequence dozens of times, I never noticed that during the combining one can clearly see both the Buster Tomahawk and Buster Homerun in the towers. I always wondered where the designs for the GX34 versions came from and here they are staring me in the face. Always something new to see. Impressive to see them include weapons in the drawings that never even get used. .
  3. Disappointing to hear this. A few snippets of violence or not, it's still a needless change to something that's been fine for decades. The missing music is even more troubling. Reminds me of the debate over the US edits to Gunbuster (which were a lot more egregious than this but only on a US release until it wormed its way onto the Bluray). One can argue that it's so short and doesn't change the plot all they want, but they forget that it still alters the tone. Music especially affects this. It's why I'm always skeptical over surround remixes. It might be an upgrade in channels, but it can alter the presentation and feel depending on how it's done (I remember how drastically different those remixed Gundam movies were). It's not Star Wars SE bad, but you're still altering something people tend to remember very well and a change for better or worse will always be seen while watched as a change. It may be small enough to ignore and still pony up for, but if you think like that, then you basically give them carte blanche to do whatever they feel like. There's no need for this, and I'm tired of studios that try to sneak it by fans at the eleventh hour. I also will never get the "if you're upset enough over little changes to be unable to enjoy the film with them you obviously never really did" argument. What makes it more ridiculous is that they bothered to include something labeled "original theatrical version" and yet it's not. It's not the first time I've seen something released as such yet it still has the alterations made, just not the added scenes. I can't remember at the moment what it was, but it's still deceptive. There's no reason not to have the theatrical cut be just that, warts and all (including the error fixes would be nice too). As for who, I wouldn't entirely blame Kawamori just because they claim it was up to him. For Gunbuster, Bandai claimed the change was made by Gainax producers. I'm not sure who they meant since when I asked Yamaga about it he was learning about it from me. So it could very well be a passing okay from him and nothing more. Guess I'm glad I can't afford this at the moment anyway. I'm sure some fansubber will fix it. The point is that they shouldn't have to.
  4. I'll be coming in on BART with my sister and her friend. They're non-Macross fans, but big on Jpop. Some of my con friends should be there as well.
  5. There's a thread concerning that in the Meetups Conventions board. Though getting Norcal fans to collaborate on anything of late is a trying experience. ;; http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=36962 I did write back to the street team organizers as to whether the tickets were upgradeable, and it doesn't sound like they are, but it also wasn't certain they understood what I meant. They suggested buying the VIP and then telling them to transfer the ticket to another name. So who knows? I'd gladly pay the difference.
  6. Looking it over, so far we have: Mercurial Morpheus UN Spacy oshanmacross Britai 7018 Kamjin 639 Seanzilla The Songstess Fairy Lots of new faces.
  7. I'm hoping to get into SF by noon and head straight to Japantown. Not exactly sure when I'll hit the venue itself. I'll be wearing my SMS jacket, so I'm easy to spot. Who went for VIP tickets? I tried seeing if the ones I got as part of the street team were upgradeable, but it doesn't sound like they are.
  8. I've been wondering this ever since Grace said it was appropriate that Ranka sing it at the end of Frontier. A song of actual historical merit makes a bit more sense for that comment than one from a popular 20 year old movie. Then again, socirty is so culture based, it might not matter. For the longest time, canon had essentially been to my knowledge, "TV is what happened, DYRL is what it looked like". With the concept that neither are truly "canon" one can sort of look at it like the lasting debate over last song played on Titanic - Nearer My God to Thee or Song d'Autumn. Both have their likelihoods and detractors. In Nearer's case, several people recall hearing it, and the band leader claimed he'd want it played at his funeral. Against it though is that most that heard it were far away. There's also three versions of it; Horbury, which British passengers would've heard and the one in the White Star play book; Betheny, the American version; and Propior Dio, the Methodists version and likely the one the band leader was familiar with being a Methodist. None of these sound that similar. In Autumn's case, we have it on authority of Harold Bride, who was near the band at the time and said it with certainty. He also didn't mingle with other survivors, preventing word of mouth to color his memories. On the downside, he's the ONLY one to claim it, and never actually clarified what he meant (he just said "Autumn", which could be a Welsh hymn as well as the waltz). "What the hell does this have to do with Macross" you ask? One could easily take it as that both versions are correct depending on who you talk to. She could've sang both DYRL and Love Drifts Away at the battle. Perhaps the TV drama omitted DYRL, and then when they made the film, someone decided they liked it so much, it took center stage. You could even take it as a last Minmay song, performed along with An Angel's Paints and they threw it in for the heck of it and added the backstory. If you really want to bake your noodle, consider that the "TV isn't canon" line technically applies to Frontier as well. Ranka never sang DYRL, she sang Love Drifts Away, but since most audiences knew the film, they changed it. ^_- . So maybe it's not as tight as UC Gundam (which has it's own issues), but at least it's not the Leijiverse.
  9. Glad to see that they didn't DNR the hell out of it. Looks like I really do have a reason to put up with the remasters odd colors. Still don't really see the swooning over the pachinko footage. It essentially looks like early digital painted anime with the modern cel-shaded CGI mecha that's inescapable these days. The designs are alright and it's mostly fluid, but it looks horribly cheap overall even by modern standards with the way the effects and movement are done. Good for a game and bonus footage but I'd hate for the series to be redone looking like that. I'm apparently in the minority on this however.
  10. As you know, May'n will be performing in California on June 21st in LA and June 23rd in SF. Figured that a thread might be in order to perhaps get an idea of who's going. I'll definitely be at the SF event. Who's with me? On a somewhat related topic, Fanimecon apparently featured some footage and tour good of Mamegu. Not that I could find them.
  11. Impromptu? I suggested it back when it was announced. XD I'll see you there man.
  12. That first post is slightly out of context as it was spread across three posts originally (she has a habit of censoring herself, especially when it's emotional). What kicked it off this time was a comment someone made about being Minmay when she was younger. Instead of brushing it off, she reinforced that she "isn't" Minmay in a literal sense and started it off with this follow up . I get what kicked it off, as the comment was on a post about how she felt about her career and future. I do think she overreacted though as it was basically a playful comment. As another fan of both, I can understand her frustrations, but do think she lets it get to her a bit too much. What seems to be the key issue is the "typecasting". I can understand why she'd be upset that people come in and seem to love a role she did three decades ago instead of her new work. It seems to make her feel like she can never top herself. Add in that some people have implied she's a has been or never was, and I get why it's upsetting. She doesn't want to be known as Minmay, but it's inescapable. Like it's been said though, this happens all the time, and one must learn to live with it. Instead, she lets it eat into her confidence and that's what's troubling. What I don't understand is why she can't accept it for what it still is - fandom and adoration. Minmay is a big deal in Macross, and she seems to forget that while she isn't Minmay, Minmay IS her. Unless all you've seen is Robotech, part of the reason we love Minmay is Mari. We love Minmay and by extension Mari. But that is apparently not good enough for her as a fan, even though a lot of us have branched into her music. It's something that's in the past, and she only wants the now. She also forgets that she hears it a lot because it's a gateway. She wasn't just in some anime, she's in what many consider one of the best shows of it's era and genre. Fans remind her of it because they're new fans. They don't know better. She needs to recognize that and accept them as such while introducing them to her new stuff. So I get her frustration. It's why I try to buy her latest album whenever I have her sign something Macross related. I like her new stuff, but I only know of her thanks to Fanime (I actually met her long before I knew of Macross), and loving Macross sealed the deal. Her constant fronts of saying it doesn't bother her when it clearly still does makes it more confusing. I've seen this all the time with other actors. I know Brent Spiner was distant from Data as well. More infamously was an instance in which Sir Alec Guinness agreed to sign a fan's copy of Star Wars on the promise that he'd never watch that movie again, he hated it so (he only appeared in the sequels as a favor to George). I think Mark Hamill summed it up in an interview best. "Well I'm a Shakespearean actor, I've won awards... So what?! You're also Luke Skywalker: Once a Mouseketeer, always a Mouseketeer". In other words, no matter how great and relevant her stuff is now, the old stuff still exists, and there will always be people that like it. It troubles me that she lets what has been a great asset for her to connect to younger fans upset her just because said fans tend to be passionate about it. Though this time was nothing. Frankly, the saddest thing I ever read on her board was a post that basically stated that she would prefer to play for new people rather than people that knew her through her old stuff (strongly implying she meant Minmay). That kind of hurt a lot. No one wants to think someone you admire and is associated with something you love resents you for it. I also hate seeing fans apologize for being a fan. It's there several times: people sorry that they brought it up, or jumping in with "I'm no Macross fan" to make her feel better, like that those that found her through Macross and not "Uncompromising Innocence" or "Wonderful People" are the scum fans. I sometimes wonder if it's just because Macross was a job, and not just old. Would it be like this if people consistently pointed out how much they liked "Rose" or "Blanche"? Just because a fan loves your old stuff a bit more than your new doesn't make them less of a fan, and if she wonders why people think she's being taken negatively for wanting to distance from Macross is because she often makes it seem just that. I still laugh at the memory of her staring at my friend and I when she preformed "Do You Remember Love" at Fanime while we were in our Macross outfits that we made for that concert. When it's at an anime con, what do you expect?. I love Mari and her music. She's important to me in that respect, and I want her to be happy and fulfilled. Frankly, it's awesome to me that someone involved in a show I hold dear knows me on sight. I'd like to think she appreciated us like we do her or at least learn to take it in stride. She also needs to seriously recognize that given how talented and hardworking she is, someone calling her Minmay isn't a detraction from it.
  13. That's because they stripped the grain out of it during clean up and discovered doing so made the image look flat and lifeless. All they could do at that point is introduce the artificial grain. Personally, I would've preferred they'd left the grain alone, but then prints can be pretty bad and supposedly most people prefer the HD video look. As for the color, they didn't really do anything to it except remove the red shift commen in fading prints, which did result in a somewhat blue look. It's the Japanese release that went gungho on color correction, but they had more modern tools to do so. Really, the EE is probably the biggest problem with the Animeigo along with a few compression problems.
  14. Page up for Yoshi's http://www.yoshis.com/sanfrancisco/jazzclub/artist/show/2695
  15. I'd like to point out that raw resolution isn't the only reason Bluray trumps DVD. One of the biggest pluses is breathing room. It's far less compressed with a much better codec. So even upscales generally benefit from the format (I think Funi's release of Samurai Champloo is the exception, as they added postprocessing that killed the gains over the DVD). I love my Animeigo discs, but they're limited to a gig an episode on a single layer disc and unfortunately have edge enhancement (they're beauitifully progressive though). They also reproduce color a lot better than DVD. My only issue with these, outside of being broke of course and Japanese media prices being insane, is the more hands on color timing of the Japanese DVD remaster. Really, it all comes down to what they do to the encode. Most of the awful BDs were usually messed with by the use of sharpening or smoothing filters or really bad sources. Though then again, I'm the guy that collected and still owns a lot of his anime on VHS, because early anime DVDs really were that bad (especially the ADV ones - there's very little difference on Nadesico for example).
  16. Yoshi's http://www.yoshis.com/sanfrancisco They've yet to list her though, showing something else on the date. Apparently, it's to be an afternoon event. Tickets haven't gone up yet. Though if they're the same as the LA live, epect $40 for general, a whopping $100 for VIP (which apparently constitutes an added meet and greet with autograph). I'm hoping the SF is cheaper, but who knows. https://twitter.com/#!/Mayn_USA
  17. Well, this is going nowhere fast. How about this, May'n is set to perform in SF on June 23. Who's in for that at least? I know I must make up for missing AX.
  18. I like the matching theming on the box. I've been checking out the fansub scene. Pretty shocked to see that most of the rips coming out are just the altered 5.1. Even KAA, who corrected it on their R1 rip. The version on BakaBT even uses the uncropped episode 6 because it "looks better and matches the previous episodes". Wish I'd caught that before it went live.
  19. I'm devastated to hear the news. I feel fortunate for meeting him briefly at AX 06. He directed or was involved in so many shows I've enjoyed over the years that I'd probably not be half the fan I am today without him. Rest in Peace, Ishiguro-san. The anime community has lost one of it's grandest forefathers.
  20. Well, it's a TV rip, not a BD rip, so I could see it as an issue there. Not that it entirely matters. Shame they couldn't at least clean it up a bit. The echoing is particularly bad.
