The computer and electronics super geek thread

Thanks 'Az, I'll give it a shot. Edit: Actually that brings up another question: if I decide that the drive is bad do I just buy a new OEM replacement, or can I stick in a newer drive? Aren't these things proprietary? -

Quick question guys: is there a series of tests or are there tell-tale signs that an optical drive is on its way out? I bought Skyfall on blu-ray and found out it wouldn't load past the 20th century Fox fanfare. I then tried the DVD copy and the machine didn't like that one either, although it eventually played it. This is all on my Toshiba Qosmio x505-898 laptop, and every other blu-ray or DVD has been fine until now; the last blu-ray I bought was End of Watch which was just a coupla' months ago and it works fine. Driver's are all updated and all of that other stuff. I tried playing it in my 60G PS3 and with SOME difficulty the blu-ray played. With the possibility of a bad disc in mind I swapped it out with another copy from Wal*Mart, but same results. A replacement drive for this machine is relatively cheap, but I was hoping there was something I could look into before I start taking things apart. I take my laptop EVERYWHERE so could it be dirty? I was under the impression you couldn't clean blu-ray drive lens. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! -

Supposedly that patch was supposed to cure the collision detection issue, but I haven't heard anyone crying "Halleluja!" so who knows. I've been there on opening day for every Alien game, including the RTS on the Xbox/PS back in the day, but I'm not feeling it for this one...- 216 replies

That Yuki and the pilot chick are must-haves. Can't wait 'till the "Over-Dard" style version of the Y2199 girls come out...

I'll be there, for the PC version. In any case, how have the previous Alien games been lacking?- 216 replies

Gah! Why? Was the pattern on her uniform designed to accentuate her breasts not pronounced enough or something?!

That is the ONLY reason why I'll be glad to see the end of 2199, because after that, they'll have to do the Comet Empire thing and then we'll see the Andromeda and everything else this Yamato re-imagining has to offer us...

Thanks for posting those links. I have to disagree with one of the commentors though; I think the CG in 2199 and many other anime titles fits in just fine...

Capcom's rendition of Mai Shiranui is my absolute dream girl, and I already have this statue, but I'd like to see the face sculpt and the attention to her BREASTS carried over to different poses and/or outfits. I tolerate the current statue, but I'm not really a fan of the "here is my ass, can you see it alright" pose. Until that time comes, I guess I'll just close my eyes...

Oh wow-my Noir figure has the exact same damage, and thinking about trying to repair the damage has been on my mind for years. I need to look into that sculpting epoxy thing, although now I think I actually lost one or two of the fingers... I actually reattached the fingers a few times with store-bought super glues, but they would always fall off after a while. I should've just glued the gun into her hand (the blond, I forget her name) and taken the pressure off of those dainty fingers...

I agree with you 'Seven but I think we come from an era where mindless, action/explosion-based movies were acceptable and even considered cool. These days, people are always expecting a Shawshank Redemption level of depth and feeling from stories, in addition to the cinematography and other production values...

I'd go with the illustrated face. Call me crazy but I've never, ever liked the animated face and it's always kept me from buying her figures. On another note, seeing that Noir statue hurts-I'll never forget the day I broke it...

For decades I fantasized about filming my own Yamato live-action film, and the way I worked the wreck of the original Yamato into the story was the EDF constructed a shipyard and base beneath the wreck, where the space-faring Yamato was being constructed. Then, similar to the established anime, the Gamilas would bomb the site and out of the crumbling ruin of the WWII Yamato the space-version would emerge, cannons blazing and doing its thing. That was just my idea, anyway...;

Keep in mind that B&C is just supposed to be a pilot/teaser. I'm sure that if Scy-fi decided to go full-bore with B&C there will be plenty of Adama & Viper shenanigans. With that being said, the flying we did see in B&C speaks volumes about Adama's potential as a hot stick...- 700 replies

I've always wondered about that myself, as it's never made sense to me. I was hoping that 2199 would explain that bit of story-telling but the way I look at this it's just going to be written off as a matter of anime magic...
