Amped Posted August 29, 2003 Posted August 29, 2003 One of the engineers here at work forwarded this link to our Design Department; needless to say we were impressed... You have got to take a look at this new process for creating amorphous metal! It is a metal that does not “freeze” into a crystalline structure but increases it’s viscosity to harden (like glass)... allowing metal alloys to be used in manufacturing processes similar to plastics. I imagine this sort of technology, if further refined & controlled, could be employed in things like the YF-21's 'morphing' wing structure, as seen in Macross Plus. Kinda gives some scientific basis for the 'polymimetic alloy' of the T-1000 and TX from The Terminator movies, too... Heck, with Nanotech advances, this sh*t 'll make for some amazing structural possibilities! Click the “Technology” link at the top of the web page and then click the “Play Demo” video on the left hand side for a press release. It’s really amazing! Keep your eyes peeled for the armor-piercing display with a hole through a +/- 10” thick steel block!!! WOAH!!! http://www.liquidmetal.com/ This is the sort of stuff that will make today's sci-fi dreams tomorrow's reality!!! Not to mention more metal content instead of plastic in toys - cha right!!!
ArchVile Posted August 29, 2003 Posted August 29, 2003 wow, that's amazing *spoiler* The ball bounced for 1:27 when the others stopped at 0:18 and 0:26
UN Spacy Posted August 29, 2003 Posted August 29, 2003 It's gonna be interesting to see what they'll be able to apply this technology to. The video of the steel ball is great.
Ali Sama Posted August 29, 2003 Posted August 29, 2003 *imagiens all th enice transformers, valkyries and gundams whcih can be made using this material*
David Hingtgen Posted August 29, 2003 Posted August 29, 2003 Yeah, well let me know when it can get through 17.5 inch class A armor. (That's the Iowa's heaviest armor). 26 inches of armor is about the limit for modern artillery penetration. (Mark 7 gun cannot penetrate 26 inch Vickers B armor, IIRC--really close, but not quite)
Commander McBride Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 I think they make golf clubs out of this stuff.....
maxjenius81 Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Molding metal? Hmm....I smell Cyber Formula! Or at least, rampant use in Formula One
Commander McBride Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Hey! Now we can finally make a valkyrie, and have it deform to look good in all modes!
Max Jenius Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 *giggles with delight imagining shooting a shotgun full of 00 buck(liquid metal) into a room of criminals* *bouce* *bounce* *bounce* Man... I just saw X2 again... excuse me.
Angel's Fury Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Hey! Now we can finally make a valkyrie, and have it deform to look good in all modes! That's only one problem solved in making a valkyrie a reality. There's the type of propulsion system needed to make a plane travel that fast, the weapons needed for close combat, the AI system and others more. It would be a dream come true if they DO manage to build a valkyrie.
Aegis! Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 ...wow , that´s one thing I hope the industry will support for the sake of technological advancement , just imagine this in conjunction with Nanotechnology

Lightning Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Hey! Now we can finally make a valkyrie, and have it deform to look good in all modes! gimmie a decade, i'm workin on it! (i'm trying to solve GERWALK mode right now...)
